Potential upgrade from 7D

Reinzphotoz I'm basically in a similar predicament as you were, but the wider-than-24mm focal length of the 16-35 appeals to me as much as the versatility of the 24-70, and thus my dilemma with choosing a lens. Let me know what you think of the Tamron 24-70 VC once you get it ;-)

The only issue I see is that when you considering the crop factor of 1.6 the 15-35 is 24mm to 56mm. And on a full frame camera, the 16-35 will actually be 16-35mm. So you might want to look at one in person to make sure that your desired focal length is what you expect. I'm not saying it will be TOO wide, but it might be.

as for the 70-85 range... that is 112mm to 136mm on a full frame... and I really don't think you have those covered in your lens options...

My new Tamron 24-70 is coming on the 24th, not 21st as I mentioned earlier - it was a typo.

You really should try out some fast glass before making the jump to the 5dIII - thankfully all the fun stuff shy of the EFs 17-55 2.8IS & EFs 10-22 will work. The Tamron 24-70 will make a huge difference compared to the long end of the 15-85.

Thanks, I do know Martin Luther King as I had studied in school ... his life and fight for African American Civil Rights Liberty was part of our English curriculum ... but I was not aware he is referred to as MLK.

I got my Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC lens ... I was supposed to go out to test the lens, but there was a real bad dust storm brewing up outside ... so I had to stay indoors ... since I was staying indoors, decided to do this very basic video about Tamron 24-70 ... sometime soon I'll do Part 2 of this video comparing image / video quality of this lens with a few other lenses.

I've yet to make up my mind in regards to which lens I should buy with the 5DIII, but right now I'm leaning more towards buying the 16-35mm f2.8L II for the fact that the wider angle will probably come in handy when taking nature/landscape photography as well as architecture and street photography. If I don't like it I can always sell it and get the Tamron instead. I also plan on getting the B+W 110 nd filter and some graduated nd filters to go with the 16-35mm.

Thanks ... capturing the footage was real easy took a little over 5 minutes ... editing took several hours :-[
I have not noticed softness issues or front/back issues but I am not a pro who goes into pixel peeping and stuff ... but I'll post some images made with Tamron, you can check and see if you notice anything.
After having used Tamron 24-70 VC, I am pretty happy with it ... it is not outstanding like the Canon ... I would say its around 80% - 85% as good as Canon (don't ask me how I derived at those figures, its just my guess from what I think I have seen). Having said I can confidently say that 16-35 L II is better than 24-70 VC ... I'll post my comparison pics in a couple of days.

It's been a while since my last post, but I've finally taken the plunge and bought a 5DIII along with a 17-40 f4L UWA lens. As for the 7D, I originally wanted to sell it but ended up giving it to my sister since she "seemed" sort of interested in using a DSLR, never mind that she doesn't know aperture from shutter, much less what ISO is supposed to do.

In truth I kind of envy you guys that are Stateside or are in places with good warranties and return policies. Where I live, they won't even let you touch the body in most stores unless you're certain you are gonna buy it, not to mention not being able to test out lenses to see the FOV unless again, you are certain you will buy the lens. Return policy is only for 7 days, so when I read about many of you guys trying out cameras for few weeks, being envious was seriously an understatement.

Anyways, I love the MK3, and it is totally not because I spent a buttload of money buying it. As for the 17-40, maybe because I still haven't gotten the hang of using an UWA lens, the 17-40 so far hasn't been as "Wow" as the 70-200 f4L when I first bought it, but I'm still learning. Anyone with experiences they'd like to share on using a 17-40 on FF would be most welcome ;D

Congrats on gettin a great camera!

I have the 17-40 and I agree with you that it lacks the wow factor. IQ on the 70-200F/4L IS looks better. However, for an UWA it's pretty sharp, has good IQ and is relatively cheap. The RAW files I get from my 5D II are easily corrected and with a bit of vibrance look really good.

The 70-200 is just in a different league. Images look near perfect straight out the camera from my 7D and 5D II.

I find this combo of lenses great for just about any situation.

Apparently everyone who made the switch loves it. What is also nice is that my sister is apparently having fun with the 7D, since she messaged me today saying "Thank God I have your DSLR" lol.

Here's a photo I took using the 17-40 at 40mm while using my spanking new Kenko ND400 for the first time. It is pretty sharp stopped down, and I highly doubt the lack of the "WOW" factor is the fault of the lens. Skill always comes before equipment . Anyways I''ll be using it more often to try and get the hang of shooting UWA. I should also note that I'm glad I didn't spend the extra 1k+ for the 16-35mm(in a sense) because I really find myself shooting at f8 or narrower apertures most of the time.

The 17-40 and 70-200 really compliment each other well. Right now I'm considering whether I should get a Zeiss 50mm f1.4, since they're selling it for approximately 580 USD in Japan, and with a membership card I can probably save some more from the points I have. I've also been looking at the 50L and the Zeiss 50 MP
