Sell 7D in favor of 6D or 5D2...?

A friend is borrowing my 7D and I have been using my 40D until I get it back. I have almost forgotten how much I loved my 40D. It has great ergonomics and the image quality is fantastic. Photos are sharp and the AF system, even though is dated a little is very fast and dead on the majority of the time, even in low light. The frame rate is good and isn't far from the 7D. I have always wanted another FF (ex got the 5D2 in the divorce) and I don't need (or afford) a 5D3. What do you guys think? This would give me a nice crop body for when I need one and a good FF when I want one.

I'm confused. In your gear signature you say your wife shoots Nikon, yet in the divorce settlement she has insisted on taking the 5D II ? Ah, well thinking on it that's not really surprising, though divorcing your partner in order to get hold of his 5D seems a little extreme.

Between the 5DII and the 6D it really boils down to two things: the 6D has much better high ISO performance and the 5DII has the 'proper' ergonomics of a joystick, decent rear wheel and good solid click stops.

The AF of the 6D is more realiable in terms of consistency for want of a better description. If your going to be hypercritical it also has a very subtle improvement in tonal quality even at low ISOs.

The 6D is also a really good fit in your hand.

LOL! Sorry. My new wife shoots Nikon. She will never switch to Canon and it's fun to be able to try out Nikon's offerings without any real commitment. I love the image quality from the D7000 and D7100 and I believe that these were 2 very well thought out cameras. The biggest thing that's keeping me from switching is I cannot stand the ergonomics of Nikon's. Strange, I know but I have heard/read this from more than one person.

I love my 7D as well but given it's hard to tell the images apart between the 7 and the 40 the one to sell would be the 7 and put the money towards a FF body. Granted, I know the 7 is a superior camera to the 40 in terms of certain features but I dont shoot video so it comes down to image quality and I believe the 40 has an advantage over the 7, espically at higher ISO speeds. And IF canon releases the 7D2 in the future I would rather sell it now while before the prices drop even more. Sad, they are 1500 new but you can pick up refurbished bodies for under a grand and used bodies for 7-8 hundred At least that's what I'm thinking.

LOL! You guys are terrible. I got divorced a couple of years ago and I have recently remarried. My ex was never serious about photography but she insisted on splitting the camera gear. It was cheaper to give her what she wanted vs paying a stupid lawyer. I can replace gear, nothing is worth fighting over. I actually met my new wife while out shooting. We always tease each other about who has a better camera and people who watch the antics can't believe we are married. I have actually been thinking about selling my 7 for a while and getting a FF instead. I am leaning towards the 5D2 but I have only used the 5D2 and not the 6, so that's why I wanted other people's opinions

The 6d is significantly newer than the 5d2. It has much better ISO performance and better AF. Also they're more or less the same price. A quality used 5d2 is still going to cost 1500-1600$ where an brand new 6d is 1750 at B&H right now. As long as you can live without the joystick, I think it's a pretty easy choice.

I have switched from 7D to 6D in December... and don´t regret it.
thought i would miss the joystick but a few weeks later it doesn't matter.

but i shoot a lot of stills, maybe some portraits. If you do a lot of sports you could miss some more af-points

I think you will be pretty happy with either choice. I have a 5D3 and a 5D2, but not a 6D. I can tell you I am in no hurry to unload the 5d2. The 5d3 and 6d are newer, but don't forget the 5d2 is still an extremely capable body. The build quality is great, and if you are keeping the 40d, shooting with the 5d2 is very intuitve; it is basically a FF 40d. I went from a 50d to the 5d2, and thats what I found. Having said that, the 6d is newer, a bit more capable and a good choice too.
