Hi, I was wondering if anybody here has already tried the Sigma 50mm f1.4?
A friend told me, it is a wonderful lense for portrait photography because of the soft light it adds to the photographs. Do you agree?

Thanks for responses

Are you referring to the older Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX? Or are you referring to the new Sigma Art lens? If you're referring to the former, the old EX I can share my 2 cents on it. What camera body are you looking to use it on?

Hi Luds34, thanks for your response. I am referring to the Sigma Art lens 50mmf/1.4 indeed. I am momentarily using the Canon 70D Body and got the 50mm f/1.8 Canon lense with it and am not totally satisfied, so I was wondering if the new lens is a good opportunity for improvement.

I have the Sigma 50mm Art and 70D, and I love that combination. So far, there is no autofocus lens that offers higher image quality than the Sigma Art, between 45 and 55mm.

Yes, some bodies of camera do not communicate perfectly with the Sigma, resulting in inconsistent focus, but my 70D works well, and in the event of preblemas, the live view works wonderfully because of the Dual Pixel AF.

I had a Canon 50mm F1.4 and was never satisfied with the sharpness, contrast, and longitudinal chromatic aberration when more open than F2. In fact, it was necessary to stop down to F2.8 to achieve sharpness and contrast similar to Sigma 50 Art in F1.4.
Even my Sigma 30mm Art overcomes the image quality of the old Canon 50mm F1.4 when wide open.

The fundamental point is that Sigma 50 Art has no chromatic aberration, even at F1.4, and this was only achieved by Zeiss Otus 55mm, which has only manual focus.

Thanks for the informational response. Now I will really consider to buy it. @ajfotoImagem Do you know if the Zoom lenses are as good as the Sigma 50mm Art? I have also seen the 18-35mm1.8 Sigma Zoom and am thinking about this option since it offers more flexibility.

I have not used 18-35 Art, but I know that is one of the best zoom lenses to APSC. That said, it does not reach the 50 Art, in the categories sharpness, lateral chromatic aberration, and longitudinal chromatic aberration.

I love my 50 Art, but use zoom lenses most of the time due to the agility and versatility I need in events. At weddings, I use a body with zoom lens and flash, and another body with prime lens (30mm, 50mm, 100mm).

Not because I have a lens capable of "perfect" images, that I use in all situations. There are times when a F2.8 zoom is the best choice, and there are times where I have the time and enough space to make 50 Art show your best.

I think 18-35mm Art is tempting, but I hope soon will launch a Sigma 17-50mm Art, which would be much more versatile for my use.

I have both the 50mm Art and 18-35mm Art and they focus very nicely on my 7D2 but not as well as my Canon 17-55 2.8 IS USM did but not much focus as well as that lens. I would even say my 50mm Art focus better that Canons 50mm 1.4 and if there are issues I use DPAF.

I'm quite impressed with the Sigma 50mm Art. I haven't done a side by side comparison with other 50mm lenses, but the photos I've made with the Art have been quite good.

Check out this review of the 50 Art by Will Chao: http://willchaophotography.com/sigma-50mm-f1-4-art-review/

I couldn't believe The Angry Photographer's video on YouTube in which he blasts the 50 Art for all sorts of reasons, including the "Art" name. I doubt he has actually used it!

Thanks for the helpful responses so far, I was just wondering since you (@Refurb7) mentioned the photos you have made with the 50 Art, if you could show some here? (Or as a message to me) I would be very thankful. :)
