For those who shoot soccer and football using the 300L, have you noticed a difference between IS mode 2 and 3 for these two sports? Does mode 3 provide any noticeable improvements?
Turn IS off for sports or your pictures could be soft due to the IS not being settled while you move the lens and press the shutter.
Then, keep your shutter speed high to freeze motion.
Unless you are trying to do something fancy like use a slow shutter speed and pan with the subject then use IS mode 2. In general turn IS off for erratically moving subjects.

I have great success with using IS mode 2 for Soccer and Football. Mode 3 should work as well but there is not any benefit. Mode 2 lets me hold focus better on the players faces.
I have taken shots extensively with and without IS enabled. As long as you use a fast shutter speed, the image will be frozen. No difference in IQ with or without. Note, I only use IS to allow me to hand hold and maintain a tight focus on the players faces.
Otherwise generally no need to use IS for sports. Mode 3 wont help you hold the focus point as it activates only when the shutter is pressed.
I shoot a quite a lot of sports such as football (soccer for the Americans) etc. and am always in mode 3, but normally use a 400 f/2.8 ii rather than the 300.
Sports/action photography is exactly what mode 3 was designed for.
