Step-up ring question

This is probably a stupid question but... If i put a step-up ring (58 to 77mm) on my lens and left it on, would i still be able to put the 58mm lens cap on or would i need to use a 77mm one?

All my filters are 77mm, so i would probably just leave the step-up ring attached...

With a 58-77mm step up ring attached, you would then need to use a 77mm lens cap as the filter thread (where the lens cap locks in) becomes 77mm with the step up ring fitted.

The problem is that the step-up ring precludes the use of the lens hood...and you should be using the hood, if possible.

I have always found that a CPL usually precludes the use of a hood...unless you want to always take the hood off/reattach it after recomposing

Maybe I just have longer fingers, but I have no issues. Certainly not with a 24-70, etc., but even with the 70-200 II it's not an issue for me to rotate the CPL with the hood attached.

It is for a CPL filter and i don't use the hood with it, if i need to prevent flair i use my hand or lens cap to shield the lens! I always try to use a hood, but it isn't always the case!

You had mentioned leaving the step-up ring on all the time...

i would probably just leave the step-up ring attached...

I'd just put the step up ring on when you need to use the CPL.

Another option (assuming your lens isn't ultra-wide-angle) is to buy a 77mm rubber lens hood - the circular design that fold back for storage, around $15 - and screw it onto the front of the CPL. You can then adjust the CPL by turning the entire hood, and when the filter's not wanted it'll fit onto your step-up ring too.

Much fewer problems with the new 24-70, but the old one had a hood nearly identical to the 70-200...a much larger hood.
