Hi to all!

upon reading some threads in here about arguments on 5d3 vs d800, there are some guys who were saying they are thinking of switching from canon to nikon and vice versa and there are also a lot of us who are infact wanting to try other brands but are held back due to the fact that we have already invested a lot in gears and lenses.

with that in mind, my question is: Has anyone thought of making an adapter for canon lenses so we can use it on nikon bodies?

Hopefully you won't get a lot of hate for this, but it doesn't seem physically possible to shoot Canon on Nikon cameras. The Canon EF mount is larger in diameter, thus it is able to "Adapt" to the smaller diameter Nikon, Pentax, etc. bases.

Now, you might possibly be able to use Canon FD glass on Nikon cameras via an adapter. But the performance is likely to not be very good.

I may be wrong but it was my impression that the canon lens mount was phsyically too big for nikon so even if they make an adapter some way some how, the focus scale and more importantly, infinity, could be off. Alternatively the nikon lens mount is smaller than canons so it's easier to make the adapter and not affect focusing.

The critical dimesion is the flange back distance; you can use an adaptor to convert from one lens mount to another if the lens has a longer flange back distance than the camera mount requires. This measurement is 44mm for the Canon EF mount and 46.5mm for Nikon's F mount (and BTW, 42mm for the Canon FD mount). Thus it is not possible to use an adaptor to convert EF to F mount (or FD mount to either EF or F mount) without losing infinity focus, unless the adaptor has corrective optics, which degrade image quality. The short flange back distances of mirrorless cameras is one reason why adaptors have become so popular.

The flange distance is shorter on Canon than Nikon (44mm and 46.5mm, respectively). So even if you could mount a Canon lens on a Nikon body at the flange, it would be like you have also inserted a 2.5mm extension tube as well, making infinity focus impossible.

Now mounting a Nikon lens on a Canon camera is easy, if the flange-to-flange distance of the adapter is 2.5mm then the lens will be able to focus throughout the entire range for which it was designed.

This is exactly why there are currently a lot of dual brand shooters. The Nikon D800 has tempted a lot of us.

absolutely! taking to account the 14MP difference, a lot of people predicted it will not be capable to handle high ISO and noise but to my point of view 5d3s' edge is not as big as a lot expected. From what I saw the only big difference is on the video capabilities(high ISO) which for most of us didicated to STILLs is neglegible.
At this point I'm looking at all sides wether to get the 5d3 or d800. Swicthing? NO! i'll keep my 50d and my glasses if ever I decide to get nikon as I don't want to loose a couple hundred bucks on selling my stuff.
