The Technicolor CineStyleâ„¢ is a Picture Style (profile) for Canon EOS DSLR cameras that optimizes the dynamic range in the image by leveraging the capabilities of the Canon imaging chipset. Cinematographers and their post-production partners will have greater flexibility in color grading and finishing their projects.

Although the Technicolor CineStyle was designed and optimized for the Canon EOS-5D Mark II camera, the Technicolor CineStyle can be installed and used on any current Canon EOS DSLR camera.

Its for video, it may work for stills, but who knows what you'd get.

That would be pointless as the picture style is just a set of parameters for the JPG-conversation you bypass anyway. As ACR uses its own independent set stored in the software you might at best see some influence based on the sharpness/color/contrast sliders. And the thumbnail looks different, at least until its replaced with the first in software conversation.

If you're curious you could apply the technicolor-profile retroactively via DPP and see how it looks like - remember, its meant as a baseline for post processing, albeit not for maximum neutrality but to fit an established pipeline.

I've been playing with the Technicolor profile since the day it came out, the results are MUCH better. Even if you were to set up a picture profile with the "NEUTRAL" setting with sharpness at 0, and Contrast/Saturation at -4 it still wouldn't be half as neutral as the Cinestyle profile. More or less it saves some of the detail in darker areas, it's not so contrasty/saturated.

Prior to this profile, DSLR footage didn't respond well when adding color effects. It would either be oversaturated or much too contrasty.

When you first see the footage, you may be turned off, as it doesn't look as good as it normally does. That's because they are giving you the "ideal" starting point for color-grading. After you ingest the footage and apply the color curve they give you (.LUT file) it really makes the footage look AWESOME.

Must have if you're going to be shooting any video.
