Thinking about moving from a 1Dx back to 5D MkIII

Positives for the 1Dx:
2. Spot metering on any AF point (not just the center point).
3. A bit faster AF speed on most lenses.
4. better metering and AWB.

These are really very desirable features for reliable/pro shooting, esp. the af-linked spot plus RGB metering should do better in some situations where my 60d/6d becomes hit-or-miss and you have to expose for safety.

Negatives about the 1Dx as compared to the 5D III:

4. No Magic Lantern: No raw video, no auto_iso with flash, no 15ev enhanced dynamic range, no focus stacking, no dof or automatic bracketing, no zebras, no raw histogram, no timelapses, no user scripting, no nothing really why I keep using Canon :-)

Btw for base iso stills shooting the 6d has arguably better iq than the 1dx: less banding, more dynamic range (out of the box and another +1/3ev with Magic Lantern's mini_iso module) which combined result in even more *usable* dr.

11. Auto ISO upper limit above 1/200s (essential for sports if you use Auto ISO) - I sure hope Canon gives us this in a future 5DIII upgrade if nothing else. It cripples/crippled the Auto ISO feature and made/makes Canon look like idiots compared to Canon. Why Canon, why?

The answer is obvious, but this is an example of really braindead crippling that is only there to "upsell" customers. This problem is also fixed by ML which provides unlimited min. shutter speeds in auto_iso mode, 2/3 of my shots use this to get at least 1/500s (on 6d).

the new auto exposure compensation when in Manual mode. Not really used it, but would have loved it when I photographed eagles last Nov.

Available through ML (though currently only in a "wip" module not yet in the nightlies).

I really like Canon gear, but I'll say that the firmware crippling of features (though they may fix this one) is the one annoying thing about Canon's bodies (AFMA is another one). Obviously it's part of their sales strategy and they are not unique (Porsche fans may have heard that the Cayman S with rear diff is faster around the Nordschleife than the 911, for example), but it's still annoying.

damn when will all of that stuff get into a stable ML version for the 5Dmk3 I really want some of that and have they fixed the slow boot time. I dont want to install ML on my 5D3 unless its a more advanced stable release

Most likely, there won't be any "stable" 5d3 ML at all, due to limited dev/testing resources they recently re-labeled the nightly versions as "as stable as it gets". There are some ideas for stable branches from nightly, but I don't think they'll be implemented... much more interesting to code new things than to bughunt or write docs.

bugger
don't feel like risking bricking my mk3
even an alpha would be good

Ask anyone in the software industry - these labels mean nothing, a Linux/OSS v0.1 alpha program might be much more stable than a commercial 2.0 release version.

But for good measure, the 5d3 port is way more stable than "alpha" and is the best supported ML version: The main dev Alex uses it himself. Imho there is near zero risk with the current 5d3 port state, all unstable development is done in branches and not the main "nightly" which is essentially the "new stable".

My be: once you install it youl'll think "I must have been mad not to use this before" - the raw histogram alone is worth it as you see your actual exposure and stop flying blind when it comes to ettr and highlight safety.

I had both cameras for business, still have a 5D3 as my "family" camera (short story of why is that it's smaller than the X and my wife uses it... but... on vacations... the X goes if I'm shooting...)...

So, I had both, I shoot sports and a lot of league photo type stuff... I used the 5D3 as my team camera as it has more megapixs... My thought was there would be more detail potentially with more megapix... then I shot a team photo with an X and started to compare the two images... I personally like (so don't flame me people, it's "my opinion"...) the file "quality" out of the X better than the 5D3... I sold my "business" 5D3 and bought my 4th 1Dx. Now I have no compromises, I only have X's so it's me if there's a problem now and I can't point to the camera and say "... well I used that body..." (even though the 5D3 is a fantastic camera...)

I would say if you've compared the quality of the images between the two cameras and you're happy with both, the 5D3 offers some advantages over the X...

just put the latest nighly on my EOS-M and downloaded the 5Dmk3 one

trying to muster up the guts to install on the mk3...
the M seems fine with it

Fyi: the M port is way more recent, un-tested and lacks some features that the full 5d3 version has... I know the "I don't want to brick my camera" feeling from when I first installed a ML alpha on my shiny new 60d 3 years ago, but those where the days when ML was way more unstable and didn't have the broad user base that tests it.

No "core" ML dev has a M, so it's a second class citizen port like 6d and unlike 5d3. For the M, you can try the unofficial "Tragic Lantern" fork which has more bleeding edge features available but is unsupported by the ML forum: https://bitbucket.org/OtherOnePercent/tragic-lantern-6d/downloads
