Thinking aloud about updating my body

Camera body! Bah! I thought you were onto something ... :P

Man, I thought I was really going to be helpful with my suggestion to update his/her body: "a healthier diet, regular exercise and limited alcohol consumption". 8)

While we're at it, I could use all 3 of those things :o
Well, 2 out of 3 is not bad so I m doing the first two - within reason...

Rule of thumb is the time to upgrade is when your gear is holding you back. How is your 1Dx and/5D3 combo holding you back? Or is this post a symptom of your G.A.S.?

If the 5D3 is rarely used and you still need a second body, would a second 1Dx better suit your needs?

I'm not qualified to answer from a camera perspective.

But I have run a small business.. and spent £10s of thousands on kit. Spectrum-analysers, signal-generators, CAD licenses etc. everything started at £5k a pop and went up from there.

It's easy to spend far too much, so try and be hard nosed about it. I managed to amortise a £5k printed circuit board license over a single contract where the client specifically demanded I use a particular tool, they paid a little more per day but got it done the way they wanted.

So, do you have clients who are prepared to pay the extra?.. can you identify clients who will buy your work if you use a 5DsR that are passing you by right now?.. I'm not talking about theoretical clients who might pop out the woodwork if you have nice kit, I'm talking about specific identifiable customers.

If you think showing off the kit will help, then try it out by renting it. I recall reading an article about the 200f2 lens, I think it was roger at lensrentals, where the presence of a "really big white" on a shoot hooked in new clients who were dazzled by the kit.

Remember the end goal of all this needs to be "to have enough money not to worry about the money". You won't get there by spending it prematurely.

Nothing you're putting forward as a body is going to do you any good in video work. The A7r II has horrible rolling shutter that my video friends hate. If you're trying to fill things out so as you can get new or better paying work, adding 4K and the associated audio and video accessories would be recommended. There are lots of GH4's out there that can be had for a song, and the new URSA Mini with the EF mount has my interest if it ever ships.

Way I see it, the 1DX is already a better camera than 5DSR in every way except resolution. The A7R II however has all the cool stuff which Canon lacks.

If planning to use Canon lenses it is worth checking out if they work satisfactory with the Metabones IV with latest firmware before buying however. I only have the old version 3 with old firmware which works good with some lenses but won't lock focus with others. When it locks it is more accurate than with my Canon bodies however. Version IV is said to be much better.

Using native lenses is best, then the autofocus of the A7R II is in some ways even better than Canon's (eye focus, face recognition, subject tracking).

I think would be wise to try the A7R II for a while before buying if possible, long enough to get familiar with it because it may take some time to configure and get used to before you can use it at full efficiency.

Well it has 2 modes of 4K video: Super35 which does full sensor readout and therefore is best in low light but worse rolling shutter. Full frame mode has less rolling shutter but does line skipping so it is more prone to moire and worse in low light.

I dont think you can compare the 1DX and the 5DS they are very different cameras in many ways and I certainly didnt even consider the 1DX because of the bulk and weight over the 5 series cameras. For portraits and Landscapes I would rather the 5DS/r but for sports / action / raptors the 1DX would be better.

If I was to go with Sony (not even contemplating it) I would swap out all the glass I dont believe in adaptors they are always a compromise.

Not holding back, but neither one is perfect for studio. For some time I've been now planning (/saving money) so next year I can update 1Dx to Mk2. But especially reading good things about the Sony, it got me thinking if the Mk2 wouldn't be as good improvement for sports, as Sony or 5DS/R would be for studio. Especially since latter would be fairly cheap upgrade.
