Looooong time lurker first time poster. Have always appreciated the wealth of knowledge on this forum! I notice a lot of people here seem to be having focusing issues with their 5D Mark III. This worried me into performing some tests of my own. After some MFA using the DPP method someone kindly posted (thanks!) I am now extremely happy with what this wonderful camera is able to produce - tact sharp images! At least, to my non-professional enthusiast eye (happy to hear to the contrary though!).

JPEG - http://min.us/mml2oKnk2
100% Crop - http://min.us/mqmIxGuGo
RAW - http://min.us/m170y1QgD

Enjoy your cameras, the 5D III is (to me) perfect!

Hot damn, that's tack sharp. Maybe there's hope I'll get a good copy :)

yep and if i open it in acr 6.7 its sharp, i'll try this calibration method tonight and if i get no joy still then I'll take mine back,

these shots are COMPLETELY different to what i'm getting regardless of changing the manual AF adjust on my lenses. I'm still amazed that jpg came out of camera. not at all like the mush i'm getting.

Really sharp... and thanks for the link....

I'm just wondering... how was the quality from your unit before the microadjustments... was it as bad as the others?

Wombat - shot in 'Standard' mode with contrast turned up one notch. Turned down high ISO noise reduction and kept long exposure NR turned off (though neither would have impacted these shots). FYI I had to micro adjust +6.

Sparda - I wouldn't call it horrible, not as bad as some examples posted here and elsewhere, but I definitely noticed the softness. It made a huge difference performing the micro adjust.

I am not noticing any inconsistencies at different focal lengths/distances as some others have reported. For me, the one time MFA adjustment fixed the softness issue full stop.

It was a little soft, but not as bad as what others seem to be experiencing.

I also know DPP has some of the blame because images looked horrible in DPP. (I did the fix where I changed the setting in preferences and it looks better now but not as good as when I bring it into ACR.
