Vertical Grips not coming off 5D2 bodies..

Hello fellow 5D2 owners..

I have a pair of 5D2 bodies, and have both of them equipped with the BG-E6 vertical battery grips, and neither of them can be removed.. With both of them, the tightening/ loosening wheel spins freely.. and for the life of me, I can't remove the grips... I was wondering if anyone has had to send their 5D2 bodies in to CPS, USA, to have that fixed, and how much I was looking at to get those repaired..?

Apparently, it's a common problem resulting from overtightening the grip and stripping out the attachment screw. Had no idea it was a common problem until the guy who bought my gripped 5DII told me about it when he checked for the problem.

Saw this on another forum:

Ask someone to hold the camera, then you pull the grip away from the camera and turn the knob counterclockwise simultanneously. You should be able to take the grip off the camera. It's more than likely that the screw of the grip is stripped. Remove ten tiny screws on the grip and lift the cover up. Order a new screw from Canon parts and replace the bad one. You must have over tightened the screw. If you send them to Canon, the technician will do the same thing because there is only way to remove the grip unless he might uses a small, thin saw to cut the screw.

Sounds like a stripped gear in the assembly. My old BG-E2 did this and CPS did a great job. Was around $50 I think (this was years ago-2006). Also what Neuro said. I try to not tighten these screws too much after my old one did that.

Wow, that stinks. i had a monopod one time that could not be removed from my 5D2 Grip. Eventually was able to saw the monopod apart untill I got down to just the bolt.

Its why I no longer use a grip. Tighten them too snugly, and the thread strips. If you don't, they are too lose.

My BG-E2N got stuck on my 40D, half way unscrewed so it would not turn on.

The problem is over tightening or over use. The main cog is plastic and the smaller one is metal so it strips. Only way i could get it off was by drilling a hole through the visible cog and un-tighten the smaller cog with a screw driver. Broke the grip, but they are pretty cheap now.
