whats up with my focus?

why is the focus so far off?
does my camera hate this lens?

That image is comparable to my best images with the 7D when I shoot at such a high ISO. That's why I usually stick with 1250 or less. Focus looks fine though. Try at a low ISO and see if that makes a difference. Corners on lenses that wide are usually a bit distorted.

What are all those little boxes in the second image, with things like Tmax and Ektar on them?

those little boxes are some type of permanent recording memory, tiny unusable photos. one time use, can you believe it?

I'm not positive what Noise Reduction you are using if any... but if you have NR on, it CAN soften the image as it tries to squash the noise... So a lower ISO with no NR needed will look sharper than a high ISO with NR applied. Personally it looks acceptable, micro adjust can fix it a tad, but it looks like a NR thing to me...

Perfect example of how content and story is far more important than IQ, NR and all the rest put together, I’m drooling for all those lil’ 135 boxes. Bet that shop smells real great and yes I have a totally romantic unrealistic view of the past.

Higher ISO = more noise = less details (since the details get replaced by the.....noise!)
Focus looks fine.

Turn off in-camera auto lighting optimizer, noise reduction, tone priority mode and then see what comes out.

this is why i sold my 7d. Terrible focus....after it decided not to anymore. Was great at first.

and with no other canon body in its class, good luck with this one.

Can you try taking the picture with both live view and without live view? I had a misfocussing 7D. Since the live view mechanism focuses differently from the phase detection mechanism, you can see if they result in the same image or a different sharpness. If the sharpness is better with live view, then you can send it back to canon for recalibration. My 7D worked perfectly once they did that and I dearly love how accurate it is now.

a shot like that, i.e. no depth you can shoot at f8 and that will help...
