Wide Angle

I need some help as I am struggling with what wide angle lens to add to my gear. I currently shoot with a crop body and plan to add a newer crop body and a new full frame body within the next year. I am after a wide angle lens to use primarily for landscapes and occasionally for architecture ( I like shooting architecture after dark). What lens would you buy and why. Thanks for your input.

I own the superb Samyang (Rokina,Bower) 14mm MF lens.

Awesome affordable prime WA lens for a crop.

If architecture and landscapes are your main use for it, I'd say get the Canon TS-E 17mm f/4 L

I have a Tokina 11-16 for a crop body, and I like that lens.

11 x 1.6 = 17.6mm 16 x 1.6 = 25.6mm

The 16-35 works nice for me on FF, but 17mm or lower is needed to equal what the Tokina does on the crop body.

The Canon 14mm II is on my list.

The 14mm Canon on a crop is equal to a 22mm on FF, which is right in the middle of the Tokina 11-16 equivalent. If you were to buy just one lens, that might do it, but it is not optimized for the EF-S format.

The 17-55 f2.8 is the same effective focal length as the 24-70 L lens, but the EF-S version will give you sharper images becaused it is optimized for the EF-S cameras.

Your question does not have an easy answer.

If price is a factor, then I'd suggest Canon 10-22 for crop bodies. Ultra wide angle lenses are much less expensive for APS-C formats than full frame. The 10-22 does better than the 17-40L and pretty much holds its own against the 16-35L but is about half the price. Canon primes will do better than the 16-35L but will cost about the same or more per lens and not give you the focal length coverage of the 16-35L.

If you are serious about architecture and landscapes, then the TS-E 17mm and 24mm are worth looking into. They both blow away any AF options at similar focal lengths. They provide metering info when shift and tilt are set to 0 but become full manual when the lens is tilted and shifted. They are also about 3x the cost of the 10-22.

16-35 - If you are planning to shoot landscapes with both your crop body and future FF

10-22 - best wide angle option now for crop only

One of the 24s (24L or the new not yet released 24IS) for FF wide angle (assuming 24 is wide enough for you)

Of course a TS-E for architecture (have no experience with TS-E lens...yet). You can also use software (i.e. LR) to correct for perspective and distortion on your architecture shots.

For crop, the EF-S 10-22.

But now that I got the full frame 5D mark III and my 7D goes to backup/long mode, I had to find a new wide.
For Canon, the 17-40 and 16-35's became non-starters with their lousy edge; the 14 was interesting; but only the TS-E 17 was of practical interest.

I went with the Zeiss 21mm - edge to edge sharp, magical color, and very wide for most situations. A Zeiss 15mm comes later. Its Manual Focus but Focus Assist does works great for situations where you would use ultra-wide on a FF. And for a crop, its essentially a 35mm (33).

The 10-22 is likely up for sale soon. Its like an old putter - love it, but I have a much better tool now.

I was in your situation last week and decided to go with 16-35 II. This is my 1st wide angle lens for landscape. It's an AWESOME lens on my 5D III.
