The 1D/1Ds created product confusion amongst Canon's customers.
The 1DX is a unified product to remove confusion.
I use both the 1DMK IV & the 1Dx, I also have a 1DsMK III sitting gathering dust, there's no confusion in my mind, and the large majority of people that bought into the 1D line, bought for the higher frame rate that a 1.3 crop sensor made possible (and the perceived extra reach on a long lens), those that bought into the 1Ds line bought in for the better Image resolution of a FF sensor.
Why Canon amalgamated the line in my view had zero to do with dim & confused Buyers, it had more to do with the fact that Canon were spreading there eggs among three sensor developments, FF, 1.6 & 1.3 crop, it was a decision based on Market & Economics, nothing to do with how intelligent the chosen market happened to be, most people buying into the 1D line of Canon products are either professional, semi professional, well healed Amateurs or less well healed amateurs that know pretty well exactly what they want in a Camera body.
Why Canon didn't go down the path that Nikon did & continues to do where most Nikon top end Bodies allow at least 2 or 3 different in camera crop factors, Canon to my knowledge have never done that, which is a shame in my view, regards this point, I acknowledge some confusion.
