Zeiss Softar II filter, or star effect filters, in Canon big whites?

So does anyone have experience with using something like a Zeiss Softar II 52mm filter with the screw-in filter holder for any of the big white lenses? How about star filters? I'm wondering if the positioning of this sort of filter so far back toward the rear of the lens alters how such filters behave.
