Is the RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Z coming in two colours?

We leaked the first image of the Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Z over the weekend, and are 100% confident that the image is real. If you missed it, here it is again:

Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Z in black

This image is perfectly legitimate, it's full resolution, it had a full EXIF, we had a conversation with the person who provided the image, and passed all of the forensic tools we put it through.

Then today, we received another image of the RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Z, but this time it's in Canon's normal white paint job. We're told that the image was taken in Paris during the Olympics.

Now, this image didn't come with some of the usual good signs. There was no EXIF, contact information, the image was resized down to 1024 wide, and it was also in .PNG. None of that is normal when we receive images of unreleased products. Obviously, “Normal” doesn't always happen.

So, the person that provided this image, if you have a full resolution version with the full EXIF available, we'd love to see it. We won't publish it if you don't want us too.

Some of the forensic tests did come back with some inconsistencies, bur nothing showed that it was definitively manipulated. Phones can also do some funky things to an image.

We have seen some very good fakes in the past, but they had more definitive signs. This one only has one issue that causes us pause, but again, it isn't conclusive. We are trying to replicate the issue from random images on the internet, but no luck yet.

So I will let you fine people decide, as some of you may have better tools and skills than I do to detect image manipulation. I'll continue to figure it out or get more conclusive information on this interesting bit of camera fodder.

Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Z in white:

I don't recall a time when Canon released the same lens in two colours (I have been corrected by EF-M lenses that came in multiple colours, but that whole system never existed to me), beyond maybe some limited edition thing. Everything has a first time. I wouldn't be shocked or opposed to such a choice. This topic hasn't come up prior in any conversations that we've had.

We have thought an image was a fake and it wasn't, but that's only happened once with the RF 200-800mm f/6.3-9 IS USM.

  1. Clearly Canon is frightened by Nikon's surge in 2Q and now desperately looking at things to change - including moving from it's legendary white 70-200's to the dark side.

The EF-M 15-45, 18-150, 55-200 and 22/2 all came in both black and silver

Surely both images must be fake - no lens designer in their right mind would keep designing lenses without Arca Swiss dovetails cut into the lens foot. And since neither image has it they must be fake!

I think an arca swiss foot on a canon lens from the factory would be a sure sign it is a fake image! Even the lens foot got to get hit by the cripple hammer...lol.

  5. The resized PNG is likely because it is a screenshot of the actual picture. I do that when I want to ensure the location information is gone, but don’t want to roundtrip to a desktop.

  6. It kind of would make a bit of sense to me, Canon photographers like the white, I'm not sure about the temperature thing anymore. I'm sure the white paint would be $200 more.

  7. Please don’t give them idea’s and arguments to raise prizes 😉 .
Yeah I don't think Canon is going down the Leica route. "Black paint? That would be 50% more please."

Yeah, it'd be fantastic if Canon relented and started including the Arca indents on feet.

  9. I mean... If they offer painting the lenses for a charge, I'd be down.
Gonna get some hilariously hideous lenses to make Potential thieves think, I carry cheap Amazon bullshit.

There are already some trainwreck skins you can get for cameras and lenses!

  11. I'm not sure about the temperature thing anymore.
Originally, lenses with fluorite elements were painted white ostensibly to keep them cooler, because of the higher thermal sensitivity of fluorite (Nikon stated, "Fluorite cracks easily and is sensitive to temperature changes that can adversely affect focusing,"...but that was before they started using fluorite elements themselves). I say ostensibly because the early fluorite-containing Canon lenses were black (FD, but also lenses like the EF 100-300/5.6L).

Starting with the EF 70-300L, which has no fluorite elements but is painted white anyway, it seems to be partially marketing/expectation. Among RF lenses only the supertele primes (≥400mm) and the 100-300 have fluorite elements, but many others are painted white.
