Apparently ad agencies in New York City are “clamoring” to get name photographers for an upcoming Canon spot. 1Ds Mark IV?

Hope to be really true! :)
I can hope! I don’t care about the 1Ds, I care about the new lenses that will be announced along-side it. :)
Ditto
Tritto.
I expect to see the new 24-70. We will see if any of the rumors about a specialty lens are true.
Quadro. If it’s really the 24-70, i feel like buying myself a super early christmas present :P
I dont think 99.9% of canon shooters care about the 1Ds and the sales figures are going to show that. Very few will continue to purchase it and will instead opt for the 5D Mark II. I think Canon is going to learn a lesson very quickly on just how big of a mistake the 5D Mark II was.
They won’t care about a full frame version of the 7D’s sensor tech?
100-400mm (or revised focal length) with brand spanking new AF and IS, don’t care if the optics don’t change at all, but I will not be getting this lens in its current antiquated AF and IS guise.
The new Sigma 50-500mm with OS is looking mighty tempting can’t wait to see the reviews…….. anyone seen any?
Well, I’ll be getting one and I know at least a dozen others poised to do the same. Doesn’t mean it is a good fit for everyone, but it also doesn’t mean it won’t be a great evolutionary step.
The 1 series was never designed for mass use, they know exactly who is purchasing which models, etc.
The 5D MK2, while a very nice camera especially for that price, is still far behind what 1-series is.
To me the most important question is, what it is going to be like? Is Canon trying to sell its old tech one more time or can we see some innovation. The 1D MK4 + FF squeezed tight of pixels and a bit of irrelevant video (no matter the RAW possibility) does not really make much sense, especially in the light of Pentax 645D with its much bigger sensor and the lack of AA filter.
2000D WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!!!
It doesn’t matter. The 5D Mark II is way behind the 1Ds Mark III already in terms of camera quality yet for some reason the 1Ds Mark III sales have tanked since the release of the 5D Mark II. I can easily see some $2,000 or so rebates on remaining 1Ds Mark III bodies when the camera is near release.
They need to release something to make it worth the extra $6,000+. There are a few things they could come out with that would be nice. They have to do something new and something that people will find useful. I just dont think a 29-32mp camera can sell itself when there is a 21mp camera that is so much cheaper.
What really matters is a Digic upgrade. Canon really need a Digic V with better video downsampling and better automatic lens corrections like Panasonic has done for years. It’s long overdue and a 1 Ds Mk IV would be a great opportunity for launching it even thoug it might be even more important for lower end dSLRs and P&S models.
They only thing they could do to honestly shock people would be to have something larger than a FF sensor in that 1Ds Mark IV.
I just want a FF camera with a brilliant autofocus that doesnt cost the earth. Doesnt matter how many pixels there is if the autofocus is crap the images will be unusable a lot of the time, simple as!
Well that is what this company does…
http://www.nikonusa.com
But the IQ is lousey and file size is pitiful.
Why not buy the old 1Ds or 1Ds2n?
they will but most of the times the pockets are not that big. At least not mine
fanbois dont give up! gosh
How do we get the site owner to ban fanboys like kevin?
Pentatro
i NEED the 24-70! badly.
Nah, don’t ban them. We need Canon fodder
Hexatro!
24-70 is melted into my 5d2 almost at all times! when its update is ready to pre-order, i will get it!
hahaha nice pun. CANNON/canon fodder
*****They need to release something to make it worth the extra $6,000+ ******
Example:
RAW video recorder and Digic V.
otherwise…..
1Ds Mrak IV vs Pentax 645D with its much bigger sensor……uhmmmm Pentax 645D of course !!!!
+1
I also don’t want to buy the 100-400 as it is now, with antique IS and apparently a considerable amount of sample variation.
I also had high hopes for the new BigmOS. However, it is really pricey, considerably heavier than the old one and with an even bigger filter thread (but still did not get a f5.6 max aperture at the long end), and if the test images which you can reach from here
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1029&message=34814744
are representative for the performance of this lens, than the only thing that can beat the 100-400 will probably be its successor, for which we will be waiting any longer without any real competition, at least not from the third-party lens manufactures, i.e., not for EF mount.
But how about some cross system competition?
If Nikon improved their 80-400 (Was it that focal length? Well, the closest thing Nikon has to the 100-400, and I do NOT mean the 6000$ 200-400 f4), then Canon would finally be forced to pull out that improved design of the 100-400, which the Canon CTO has probably had hidden in his desk drawer for quite some time and manufacture it.
I bet this is just what happened with the 70-200 2.8 IS:
Just a few months after Nikon announces their vastly improved 70-200 VR II, voila, Canon announces the 70-200 2.8 IS II.
They definitely had the 70-200 2.8 IS II design ready for quite some time, but decided to milk the old cash cow a bit longer.
If they hadn’t they would have never been able to react so quickly to the Nikkor 70-200 VR II, unless for the unlikely coincidence that both companies really started development of these lenses at about the same time independently of each other.
This is not even overly risky, as the answer came within a reasonable time frame, so they did not risk loosing too many follows to Nikon, and that way they have been able to cash in twice on all those people that always need (=want) the latest and greatest.
Most people are pleased with D700/D3s IQ, and who gives a rat’s ass about file size?
These are my thoughts….though my thoughts are also that any kind of format change like that will wait until the Mark V
Why is he a faniboi? He is right you know…. Nikon’s midrange provides pro autofocus at lower megapixels……
IF you’re a daily visitor to a certain website, I think you’ve already seen B&W pictures from it… but i might be wrong.
I never understood why a company would keep something that’s already developed hidden so as to milk an older (and less expensive) version, unless the profit margin for the new item is lower or they expect to sell fewer of them. I keep seeing that line of logic in people’s comments, but am I missing something?
All the development costs are paid for, so might as well start milking (and benefitting from) the new version, right? …lest the new version gets old and beaten by the competition.
Hepto – I have been so tempted to buy the current 24-70 but decided to wait for the IS version…
…expand
Fine, I’ll bite… octoro. Stupid intarwebz gamz
Yes, lack of AA filter would be huuuge for Canon and represent a step towards significant quality improvement when it comes to prints.
The other problem with this argument is that when companies invest a lot of R&D into a new model, they need to recoup those costs as soon as they can. i don’t think most companies have the luxury to sit on new (expensive to develop) products for too long. Maybe 6 months, but I doubt much longer than that.
My bet is that Canon will bank on improved video features to get the bigger money, yet still-small studios to pony up.
Raw video anybody?
Plus they will need to have a few lenses ready to go. I don’t see that happening. But wouldn’t it be exciting?
Nanogano! (nine sided object = “nanogan”).
But not any gay zooms. Only ultra fast primes, please.
YES please!!!
how about a 35 f1.2 ? or maybe f1.0 :D
maybe smth wider then 14?
And FYI the 5D Mark II IQ isn’t that great. The D700 and D3s are significantly better than the 5D Mark II in just about every way possible. This has been documented time and time again.
It’s also been said god knows how many times on the internet that megapixels for the most part are just a serious marketing ploy since most of you don’t even need 21mp camera bodies.
I honestly believe many of you want a 21mp camera just to say, “My camera has 21 megapixels”. I rarely if ever use the 24.5mp in my D3x to their full advantage when it comes to printing. I can make the same image using a D3s that I can with a D3x. I’m talking blown up to 32″x48″ there is very minimal differences between the two images.
They have printed billboard advertisements on a 12mp camera. So once again, why do you need big sensors?
I’m hardly a fanboi either. I’ve used both Canon and Nikon and was a Canon shooter for the better part of a decade before switching. Simply put Canon has a serious lack of vision and produce products which lack quality and durability all while not listening to their customers.
They produce bodies that are prone to having reliability issues ranging from the entry level cameras right up to the 1 series. I myself went through three different 1 series bodies in 11 months all with different problems. We found out in Hawaii the weather sealing on my 5D Mark II was simply not as good as everyone had told me.
The second I started using Nikon the first thing I noticed was that the Nikon speedlites are significantly better than Canon’s. It’s not even remotely close actually when it comes to the flash systems incorporated by both companies. I haven’t had a single regret yet. The only regret I do have is that it cost me a lot of money to switch over.
There is simply no price a professional photographer can put on reliability though. It is more important than anything they can put into a camera body.
It would take something very huge to shift the market share back in Canon’s favor. They own the compact market there is no questioning that for the moment. Nikon has upwards of a 10 point lead in market share in the DSLR marketplace though. A lot of that can be attributed to the fact Canon pro bodies haven’t been selling for a long time now.
how many 1Ds III did they actually sell? aproximate…
60D ?
While I mentioned this, I didn’t mean this to be something revolutionary. I just see adding more MP boring, in the light of diminishing returns.
Yeah RAW video is going to make 1 million pros go out and buy a $9,000 Camera. Many people wouldn’t buy the pentax simply because it’s a pentax. The great thing with Canon and Nikon is other companies so make so many gadgets for their camera systems which to say the least is a huge bonus.
The wolf will cry as soon as the moon passes by…
That would put us on April Fools Day!
I bought one.
Alright, I’m waiting to see:
° 49 posts saying this announcement is going to be the 60D instead
° 23 responses saying there doesn’t need to be a 60D and the people above don’t know what they’re talking about
° 8 people saying screw this, where is the 24-70mm L/2.8 IS II already
° 5 people paid by Nikon to troll this board and say the D90 is better than the 550D
° 3 people offering to sell their plasma to be able to afford the 1Ds4
° 1 moron with a friend who claims they’re testing the camera now, just like they said they were 3, 6, and 12 months ago
So hmm kevin.. no way I’m reading all that text but one quick Q for you… what are you doing on this site then ?
Eight people might make the mistake of naming the 24-70 2.8 successor a 24-70 2.8 IS II, but 24 people will ask where the hell the 24-70 2.8 IS is already.
Gee, in what percentage of images, actually printed and used and not viewed at 400% on a monitor, will people be able to tell the difference between 32MP and 21MP, or even 12MP — 1% maybe?
‘big mistake’: you mean because they are selling so many?
i agree. if the replace the line skipping b a decent interpolation, the entire movie crowd will go for it.
If you crop like moronic art directors and editors, pretty much anybody.
I’m looking for a 100-400 version II. Come on Canon get the 1Ds4 out so then you can get on with everything the 1Ds4 is holding up.
Same here!
I’d even be happy with a 24-70 f2.8L II
I don’t know about the calculations of a lens manufacturer, but I think the point in the development of a lens where things get really lens expensive is preparing the manufacturing lines for actual production. In particular when today a lot of optical design issues can probably be handled with computer simulations. So having the design and maybe a few hand-built prototypes, while not exactly cheap, will be a fraction of the total cost of getting the lens to the customer.
+1
I also don’t believe they would introduce a new sensor format (+ mount and consequently lens lineup). And if they really did do this, it will not be instead but in addition to a standard FF 1Ds IV.
Eh?
…contract
I see a lot of letters put together there, some even seem to form words and sentences.
Troll Fail.
So at least 1 then
I think I can just make out a “1” in the shadows if I boost the brightness in Photoshop. ;)
I was testing the camera… oh wait… that makes me the moron….
Not many people on your facebook page.
;-)
You’re off your f’ing rocker.
I can’t argue with you – but I do expect Canon, with their massive R&D resources, to have a series of strong responses to Nikon over the next couple of years.
Depends what the subject is and the print size, but most would be hard pressed to tell the difference.
I’m available if needed… ;)
I think a fair amount care about the 1ds3 and are hoping the release of the 4 will bring the resale value of the 3 to under 4k. 3k would be wishful thinking.
I think Canon needs the 1Ds for prestige.
I think consumers buy Rebels and the like because they see pros using 1 series cameras.
Kind of like car companies spending heaps of money on racing cars.
Sure they get a little R&D out of it, but the real value is in the promotion.
The “What wins on Sunday, sells on Monday” mentality.
Please don’t put ‘lack AA filter’ and ‘quality’ in the same sentence. We *want* an AA filter at this sensel size. If you want a revolution in IQ, clamor for the ‘Foveon’-like sensor they’ve been playing with. With 2x+ the apparent resolution at the same sensel size and full color sampling, it would actually be revolutionary. No AA filter would be a disaster (see: everything Sigma has marketed, and just one of a myriad of reasons it can’t make Foveon work).
They hold back the tech because they need to turn a big enough profit on the money they have invested in the previous R&D and production.
Also it’s good for business if you have the next big thing waiting in the wings to unleash it instantly when you competitor releases their new product.
wurd.
At least we are over the Direct Print jokes now.
Where the hell IS my 24-70 f2.8 IS anyway?
I don’t put 20″x30″ images on my Facebook page.
Photos of your cat?
That would be huge. Also, if they could work on reducing the distracting and omnipresent the moire effects.
+1 on the idea that a medium format competitor (645 competitor) would likely be in addition to whatever 35mm sized full frame sensor flagship camera they release. I think they’ll wait to see how the Pentax sells. If they sense a market Canon could enter it.
That’s the new meme. Where the hell is the 24-70 f2.8 IS?
I know another guy that got one too, so that makes two.
Yes… and a 300 f4L IS mkII
They could buy out Foveon then use their patents on direct image sensors.
Digic V with direct image sensor Oooo baby!
FYI, the 1Ds3 already sells for under $4k at FredMiranda.com. Those that sells for above $4k has less than 30k shots through it, which is an amazing deal.
So no need to wait for the Mark IV to release to drop the price of the Mark III. Although I do agree that $3k would be wishful thinking — for the moment that is.
Define most people. Cite your sources.
ditto.
And I’m sorry, kevin, the D700 is not appreciably better in any way other than autofocus tracking. One other thing–rumor has it that the D700 does not double as a B-camera for my video production package. Prices are comparable. The 5D takes great photos and shoots HD video. For me, case closed.
gotta run now, kevin–I’m headed over to the Nikon fanboy sites to do some trolling. Thanks for teaching me how it’s done.
Question: Why do you guys think you need a 24-70 IS? Seems like overkill.
Oh, right, I keep an index of every post I read about the above cameras.
File size continues to be irrelevant. If you want bigger files for some perverse reason, just run
dd if=/dev/null bs=1024 count=100000 >>DSC_1234.NEF
for each file. Presto! larger files.
And Canon is the only dSLR manufacturer currently testing RAW video and have an answer in a firmware solution and able to keep prices below $3k.
FYI even in Japan were Nikon traditionally did well recent sales figures there shows Canon trumped Nikon by widest margin in years. Recent Canon lens such as the 70-200 f2.8L MkII leaves Nikon equivelent effort in the shade and there is the new EF 24-70 f2.8 IS L round the corner.
Get a film camera, they are FF and you don’t care about pixels and they are really, really cheap too.
Thanks, exactly my point.
Now lets hope that the 70-200 2.8 IS II is on par with or better than the Nikkor 70-200 2.8 VR II. I am really excited about reading the first serious reviews (the-digital-picture’s test shots already look great), in particular DPReview. While they are slow testing lenses (they don’t seem to aim at testing older lenses at all recently), I find their reviews well founded, and with their new owner and their connections it shouldn’t be too difficult for them to get a (hopefully NOT hand-picked) review sample early.
Photozone was quick reviewing some of the latest lenses as well (like the 100L 2.8 Macro).
So at night out in the streets at 800iso you can still shoot at 1/25 and get a clear shot. But I will just use my 50mm.
And ducks seem popular too
Glad you’re doing that.
Hello there,
What about Canon’s video cameras?
I see people got too much obsessed with still cameras taking video, a camera which is painfully inconvenient without an expensive set of extras for video.
What about improving really still image side?
While it would be nice for some (well, very few very rich or very pro ;-)) folks, I am afraid that introducing a new system above the EF would drain a lot of R&D resources away from the bread & butter EF(-S) DSLRs, which doesn’t make to much sense considering that Canon already have their hands full keeping up with Nikon.
So I hope Canon does not make that move.
+1. Nothing to add.
“hopefully NOT hand-picked”
You are spot on here.
I’m not sure what Canon does with stills, but with video and motion picture, the demo lenses that they ship around for trade shows and lend to people to review are constructed from hand-picked components and are far superior to the off-the-shelf lens.
I’m guessing they do this for stills too.
Nikon make some fine bodies and flashes, but Canon make some very fine lenses.
So what can you do?
I kind of hate Canon bodies, but I love the glass, so I stay with Canon.
Are you sure that you aren’t a bored 12-year old, because that what you sound like.
How much does the earth cost? All joking aside, what do you consider a fair price for a 1DsMkIII or 32MP 1DsMIV? Given the price of the 1DMkIV and Nikon D3s, $6000 for a 1DsX seems quite fair.
You sound like an 47yo spinster.
I’ve never understood why so many want an update for this one… I understand there’s been changes and advances in technology, but we’re not asking for the new IS to replace all existing lenses, so why so many demands for IS in this one?
IS would make sense in the 135L… it would make sense in the 180L Macro… a new IS (and other changes) for the 100-400 would totally make sense… it made sense for a new 100L, and a Mark II for the 70-200 2.8 IS (will we see a non-IS Mark II as well?) but please, don’t delay all these other lenses for the 24-70, it’s already a great lens!
I have something to remove – I don’t think Canon is busy with Nikon at all. They are just on their route making money, and they seem to doing well in that respect. What a clever use of people admiring tight pixels small sensor, yet the price is even higher than the same level FF offerings. Being miles ahead of the competition was worth only when prices were high and no alternatives were possible, now it is a different story.
I think it’s an amateur/hobbyist thing. I mean, it sounds like it really just suits for walk about snapshots. Not that it’s a bad thing, but c’mon. At this point, we may as well have Annie Leibowitz (or insert your favorite here) pre-loading our compact flash cards. I shoot fashion, corp. portraits, products, architecture, and landscapes… and can’t imagine when I’d need to flip on the IS on a 24-70mm. In fact, that combination sounds sort of stupid. I’m sure I’d buy it if it came out – but what the hell?
Why does everyone talk about 1DS sales figures? It’s not supposed to sell in bulk. It’s not a Christmas present, it’s not a family portrait camera, nor is it a good travel camera. As a 5D II and 1DS III owner, I can conclude one thing: the price difference is NOT justified- nor is it supposed to be. High paying jobs, rain or shine, I feel much more comfortable with the 1DS III. The 1DS III price is for those guys you see toting around 3 and 4 of them; the guys that the price really doesn’t concern them. It’s not a price of value, it’s a cost to obtain the camera, and when you need that camera, the price doesn’t really matter.
Of course I don’t think my extra $5k+ was well spent for real weather sealing, a superior viewfinder, seductive ergonomics, killer autofocus / metering, short blackout times, and higher sync speeds and such – but I do very much LOVE them, along side my 5D II ;)
I think it’s that IS doesn’t hurt for a walkaround lens (well, contrast can go down a bit), and almost all new Canon lenses are significantly better than their old versions in IQ. Maybe you guys have rock-solid hands, but others may need some help.
The 24-70mm is a popular and versatile lens, so people are looking forward to how good a new version could be (including me).
I’m weak.
Me too, think i’ll do some more trolling through nikon rumors. I heard that the next nikons will be even better iq than the 5dII ie 8-10 megapixels woohoo. Yeah way to go nikon. http://nikonrumors.com/2010/03/18/the-latest-nikon-rumors.aspx/comment-page-1#comment-59180
Don’t understand why they don’t go one better and aim for 4 megapixels of super high quality.
By the way, Foveon technology works and please don’t bother responding if you don’t have a Foveon based camera. I do use both, the 5D2 and Sigma SD14. 5D2 is great for HD video but when it comes to photography, the percent of shots I keep that look descent is a lot lower than the ones shot with SD14. There is absolutely no comparison. And yes I know the Sigma cameras are not very good in low light, etc.
Maybe the ‘morons’ can just ask the writers to write less so they can fit more photo space… Thus keeping all of the images at their full, uncropped dimensions?
This question comes up regularly, and it always baffles me. Maybe because 95% of my photography is done in low-light, indoor situations, at iso 1600 or 3200. The ability to handhold the 24-70 at 1/40th or slower would be extremely helpful. Yes, my subjects move, but they’re not always moving. There’s the moment when a musician pauses, or their head is still while their hands are in motion.
And there are other benefits to IS as well: right now, you have to make sure you’ve got enough shutter speed to avoid camera shake, so you’ll shoot wide open or close to it. With IS, you can trade a slower shutter speed for more depth of field. On a full frame camera, you need all you can get. Nikon just released a 16-35mm lens with image stabilization. That’s a great idea. If it helps on focal lengths that wide, it’s even more useful on the 24-70.
The 17-55/2.8IS is my favorite lens on the 1.6x crop cameras, because it’s so versatile. There’s nothing like it for the APS-H and full frame bodies.
That said, I would love IS on the 135/2, which now sits in the closet most of the time, while the 70-200/2.8L IS gets all the work.
Oh, you actually forgot to say that 1ds have a higher shutter life. That alone at least justify some of the cost. :)
.
Here’s my guess:
Release of the 1Ds Mark IV, along with two lenses: EF 35mm f/1.4 L II, and the EF 24-70 L IS USM.
Just my 0.02$
Exactly when the release will happen is the real question.
And one more toy-camera for the masses! Look at the photo, looks Plastiky like all Canons. Get a Nikon and you’ll know what a tank is.
Seriously, why would it be the 1Ds?
Might as well be the 60D, the chance is 50:50, could be anything. Why is he talking like it could only be the 1Ds?
………
Why ? because if cropped sensor guys got the 17-55mm F2.8 IS then we must at least have something similar .. :P
I don’t think that they will bother and gather pro photographers to release a consumer grade camera. I believe that they will save that for more professional equipments like cameras and high end printers. :P
Thank You for mirroring the file here in the US! Upgraded without any problems.
Sure, if you want to carry around a heavy hunk of metal, you do that, the rest of us trust composite materials.
Atleast it ain’t prone to rusting, but I guess Nikon’s don’t need protection for that, seeing people never use them very long anyway.
