Stills and Video
Received word of someone speaking at a gathering in the USA about a new camera.

Apparently the new camera is from Canon and shoots HD video and stills at the same time. The camera is a lot different than the 5D Mark II.

That camera is currently being tested outside of Canon.

No word on arrival time.

3D Info
More info about a Canon 3D. This rumor is the longest lasting in the Canon photographic world.

NL received info that the camera will have a relatively  low mp count and the sensor will be optimized for video.

It sort of fits with the above mention of a video/still camera.

Any mention of a “3D” requires an entire quarry of salt.

  • The only thing I can say is that I love the girl from The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, she has great legs. the rest is BS.

  • The 3d rumour is like an old friend coming to visit every now and then to eat you out of house and home.

  • Any idea when is the next possible date that Canon will be announcing any new cameras?

  • The video/still cam sound suspiciously not like a dslr. The 3D sounds suspiciously like a fanboy’s best dream ever. A 16-18 mpx full frame camera? FPS ftw?

The problem I have with a DSLR that is optimized for video is that is an oxymoron. Camcorders are optimized for video. DSLRs are by their form factor, their lens use, and a host of other features, expressly optimized for still photos. It’s great that we have all this potential for video work with the DSLR, and every improvement is a good improvement as it relates to video, but so long as it looks and shoots like a DSLR it will always be a stills camera first.

    In any case 3D wishlist:

    21mpx full frame sensor
    6 fps
7D-like auto focus system and customization
    flash commander
    weather sealed
    improved DR
clean 3200 iso, excellent 6400, very usable 12800
whatever video bells and whistles Canon wants to give us
the 3:2 aspect ratio lcd from the t2i

    Do it Canon!

  • Awful lot of megapixel-creep going on there. First you want 16-18 then 21. Everybody knows that TWELVE is the magic number (though nobody knows why).

All you have described in your wish list is a 5D2 with some 7D features, i.e., the likely 5D3.

Given how the 5D2 is flying off the shelves, I bet a more expensive model–a 3D–with more video features for the “indie” film makers would be a cash cow for Canon. There would be too much expected of a 5D3 if it was the only offering and they couldn’t go and double the price of it for its video features, as lots of buyers only use it as a stills camera. A 3D at $5k with an articulating screen, low MP sensor, 2K video, proper pixel binning, controls for focus pulling and power zoom (new lens for that), HDMI out, SSD storage options, etc., would be a big hit.

  • :) no, it’s like 5D, just 3D. As it was EOS 5 and then EOS 3 in the film days. The EOS 3 was a beast

  • And what target was it?

I think that should be a 7D with FF sensor… but cant imagine why not to buy a 1D?

  • A lot of us folks would chop off our left hand for a 3D Canon. Right now I’m using a dual-Canon Xsi rig that I put together myself for stereo 3D. The shutters are synched automatically, but it is a huge hassle to manually synch focus and exposure.

  • Because not everyone wants to pay 5K for a body.

    $2800
    FF sensor
    ?? MP (Lower than 5D)
    7D (or better) AF
    FULL 1080HD
    6-8 FPS

Nikon makes a body just like this (minus the video) that has sold well, so Canon can really offer something to this market. I think it would be a hit.

Who knows the 5DIII might address everything with AF and fps tho?

  • And many people prefer a full frame sensor. You cannot reproduce that look with a 1D.

  • Get with the times…. there are so many people that would buy a video centric DSLR.

Form factor, great lenses, huge sensor.. perfect.

An 8mpx s35 sensor that can capture the full sensor at 24/25/30p.. With some flavour of RAW and decent video features would sell like CRAZY.

The low light would be stunning and 8mpx is still pretty good for still images.

  • you’re asking for too much I think. 4mp with 30p is more close to reality, but I’m not saying they are gonna do it. I’m just saying it’s easier.

  • I was hoping it was for weeding and other low light situations.

Dark churches where flash is not allowed.

16.7 to 18mp FF, 8 FPS, flash commander, 19 AF Points or 1D AF system, small body with optional wireless grip, proper weather seals, video of 7D.

Spot metering at each AF point like Nikon’s can do.

That would be what I want for my next camera body.

  • “Wedding” not “weeding”, some days I’m surprised I can type anything.

  • the camera is able to produce 3D images and videos also.
    just kidding…..

1ds4 is ready. all tests completed in tohoku.

  • Right-on James.

3D has ment three dimensional picture for about as long as there have been cameras (look at all the 3D pictures from about 1900).

With all the hoopla from Hollywood about 3D motion pictures Canon will not ever use that name for a normal camera. Can you imagine the outcry (and law suits) from the clueless who bought 3D cameras that only made 2D pictures. If Canon ever uses the 3D name (don’t hold your breath) it will be for a camera that makes 3D photo/video.

  • Question: While I generally like the idea of a “3D”, I wonder how much motivation Canon has to make one.

Specifically, my question is this: Did the EOS-3 ever sell very well? Reason I ask is I don’t recall EVER seeing one in the field. I also don’t think I’ve ever seen one show up used at either of my two favorite photo stores. Anecdotal evidence indicates to me that few of them made it out of the marketplace.

Admittedly, it came in at a time when I was using EOS-1’s and I was getting ready to move away from film, so I wasn’t paying as much attention to this type of camera. Maybe they never made very many?

(There are 10 of them on eBay right now. Highest actual bid is 212.00 US, which I suppose is not bad for a film camera in this day and age.)

  • Any news on lenses?
I really confused whether I should buy 50mm f1.2L or not.
    Is there any update coming???

  • why waste time and effort in improving video on a still camera. a lot of people havent really used the video capabilities of their dslr. come on canon, just make a pure video camera! for dslr, there are still a lot of points for improvement, why not focus on this.

  • effin perv..!
it appears at the banner before the Leave A Comment box below..

  • I’m a skeptic on 3D… unless the market aim for 3D doesn’t cross paths between the 5D and 1Ds; then its plausible.

  • Would like to see a 3D with eye control AF that Canon has in the film days which can be use with HD video. Now that would be something.

  • 1D or 1Ds is big and heavy brick. Definitely not an “universal camera” of the D700 type.

If this ‘3D” is something like 5D and 1D AF, then that would be finally a truly catch-all backup body for pros and a great D700 competitor .

  • That’s why it’s a good idea to split the 5D2 into one model mostly for stills (5Dx) and one model mostly for video. Only “mostly”, mind.

Professional film makers must be wetting themselves over the astonishingly cheap price of the 5D2, even if it is an ergonomic nightmare. If Canon just added an articulating screen and some focus puller dohickey, they could charge twice the price. Call that the 3D. It could evolve more in the direction of the Red cameras. The 5D3 would then just be a 5D2 with the 7D bells and whistles and still be a great seller. Everyone would be happy–except those who think the 5D line should have stuck with 12MP.

  • The one thing I can not understand is that why it is so difficult for Canon to release a 3D which is the same as 5D with the only difference of a fewer megapixel sensor, and with the chance of optimizing it towards video.
That is clear to me that there is a huge interest among photographers and also video makers for a camera which is more light sensitive and have less aliasing artifacts.

I think this would fill a huge hole in the market and would not cost anything for Canon to do it, neither would it hurt the sales of any other Canon model.

  • 1/2 a stop of light, much better bokeh, sharper at apertures wider than f/2, L-quality build, weather sealing.

  • I would have thought a 60D would not arrive till next year. This “new” camera must be really revolutionary? I mean, otherwise it would be the same as the 7D and 5Dii and T2i and everything else…

  • I think that the 60D will be launch this year.. the Canon 50D is really outdated.

My Guess: 60D + a New Rebel – for these PHOTOKINA..

7D replacement is not really necesary, the camera sell very well. 5DMKIII is posible, but not necesary.

  • You’re saying that if Canon introduced a camcorder style 35mm-size sensor format, interchangeable ef mount lens system, with articulating screen, focus pull capabilities built in, no more jello cam, etc, that people wouldn’t rather buy that than a dslr that has video capabilities added on after the fact?

    I don’t think so.

  • I’d be happier to have those features in one camera. But yes, I do think they make a nice pair. Do you use any ef-s lenses with your 7D or do you use ef lenses exclusively?

  • As far as info goes, there’s gonna be a new DSLR on the horizon with tilt screen. In “a few short months” for announcement.

  • Maybe you’re right. Who knows. Actually all the 3D thing is about faster FF. Better af + more fps and weather sealing. It’s reasonable. Actually they can call that camera Suzy, I don’t care :) And yes, I forgot to mention that a lot of people (as far as I see) want a smaller camera than a 1D.

  • As Bob said in a earlier message, 5d2 are flying out the shelves, even as flawed as it is (and it is…).

If you take it back from an engineering point of view, the need for video is not limited to 1k lines video (roughly Full HD 1080 lines). This format is ok for video clips, TV broadcast (News, tv shows…), and/or cheap TV series (like House). By cheap, I mean the Series won’t be reedited in Blue Ray master plus V2.12 super HD version in ten years or so. Full HD is nice for amateur, to produce flicks and clips for their brand new full HD TV, and it’s better than anything before for archiving family videos…but totally inappropriate for films industry archiving…

A simple example: Minority reports has been shot using classical Kodak film, and then mastered in DVD resolution for DVD first. Recently the film has been totally remastered for the Bluray special edition. Spielberg himself supervised the remastering and issue what I think is the best Encoded Bluray actually. The new master taken from the film was done in 4k….and was very very expensive to produce…
For the majors, this huge additional cost is only worth is the Bluray will be a hit. The advantage of the film is that it captures many times more details than pro cam sensors. But the remastering at an up-to-date resolution and all the processing is really expensive and a long process.
Today every photographer can enjoy digital negative as raw files. To be able to shoot at 4k directly in “kind of” video format with raw-reprocess and correction capabilities would already be a huge commercial success.

Canon main advantage for the 5d2 is the FF sensor…any director/video maker was longing for a digital version of the 35mm film…Too expensive back in the days, hence the crazy price of large sensor camcorders.

But finally, 4k…which is now common standard for digital cinema is only 4096×3072…just a little more than 12Mp total…
    2k is 2048×1536…
The point is that we already have these kinds of sensors and resolution…the 5d2 has what could be called 5k+ resolution…
Canon wants to face Red on this segment and they are definitely taking the lead over Nikon on this point.

    My two predictions:

    – Canon will improve processing abilities of their DIgic chips AND the number of channels in the sensors to ensure at least 24p at a 4k+ large sensor (so 12Mp minimal, most likely 16 to do some digital image stabilization). So we will see an hybrid camera able to shoot at least 1k(Full HD), 2k, 4k and potentially more (Red is already communicating about 5k). It’s even possible that this “camera” won’t have optical VF since it’s not the main application…taking stills will of course be possible…5d2 is only able to issue FullHD video…so 2Mp video extracted from 21Mp…Going to a FF 4k capable video sensor right now could be difficult. So APS-H sensors could be the first step. Here you have your APS-H “Evil” System…If the rumour is true it is the most reliable scenario for me.

    – Nikon will sign a partnership with a big broadcast camera manufacturer (potentially Thomson since it is in difficulty despite the very good products…easier to negotiate), to recover the lost ground in video…

  • While we are all rambling on….

Motion pictures are usually shot on 35mm film stock, but the frames are oriented differently from the 135 format used for stills. This results in an image area that is close to APS-C in size. This is why they have gone all moist over shooting films on digital 135 full-frame.

  • Unrelated, but has anyone noticed that Nikon rumors has suddenly become “the-great-Canikon-conspiricy-rumors”? Man there’s some major paranoia going on over there, soon they’ll be accusing each other of being Canon spies!

  • How do you sync shutters? I guess for stills it wouldn’t be difficult, but for video, unless there’s some way to keep them synced, they will drift apart.

  • ahh.. this forum definitely makes me want to hold up me purchasing the 5d mk 2… i dont know if you guys know this, but here in canada we have a big rebate on most of the stores, and im thinking to upgrade to 5d mk 2… having said that, if the new 5d mk 3 comes out, im sure i wont be able to afford it… but would the 5d mk 2 price drops significantly? (currently it’s sitting at 2400) …

  • I was thinking about going to the 5dII from my 40D.. until I noticed the fact that it only shoots 3.9 fps… that’s horrible. Add to that the fact that I’d need to sell all my EF-S lenses and get EF… it would be too expensive to go backwards on a spec that is very important to me.

  • VistaVision (24×36 frame) was introduced by Paramount in 1954 (White Christmas). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VistaVision

They are still used occasionally for special effects work. Many of the EFX shots in the Star Wars and Star Trek series used VistaVision cameras

    List of VistaVision films http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_VistaVision_films

VistaVision “Butterfly” cameras are still available for rental in Hollywood. http://www.geofilmgroup.com/shopexd.asp?id=35

So full frame (24×36) film cameras are nothing new to Hollywood pros.

  • Grab the 5D2. It’s a fantastic piece of kit. Yes, you could wait, and wait, and wait……. for a 5D3 but in the mean time you could be out shooting with what is arguably the best value for money FF camera around!

  • Did anyone see that weird camera the guy was shooting with at the French Open Tennis Final.

In the camera (video) shot of Nadal winning and falling to the ground, a guy pops out from one of those ground bunkers shooting something handheld and it looked like it had two lenses.

  • 7D is a fantastic upgrade for 40D users who have invested in ef-s glass in particular. If you are looking for low noise high iso though you can’t beat a 5DII.

  • Heres a link for the video of Nadal, check out 1:50 the camera you mention almost at first looks like a panoramic..if thats the right word. deffinitly interesting

  • I had the same concern some time ago. The FPS was not a big deal for me so I went to the 5DII, and it is a great camera. However I still considered the 7D, and if I really needed the high FPS, I would gone with the 7D.

5DII = better colors, better high ISO, better video, better control of DOF

7D = better for sports, cheaper

  • Get a Full Frame. You can’t imagine what bokeh, what colors and what dynamic range can it offer. screw the 7d. get the 5d! if you don’t believe me or the other guys, rent it for a few days, get amazed and buy one :)

  • On Photozone, the “L” doesn’t really do much better than the other 50mm options. Of course, they don’t go to f/1.2, but the “L” is still disappointing in many respects. It’s a hefty price to pay for a marginal improvement over the others.

If you absolutely need to have f/1.2, then it is the only option. If you have to ask what the difference is between f/1.2 and f/1.4, you would probably be better off spending your money on something else.

  • “a lot different than a 5D2 and shoots stills and video…”

and this is supposed to be exciting? that could be a point and shoot. last time canon said “something exciting’s coming,” it was a printer and a couple of compacts.

nothing to see here. move along. move along.

  • Ever hear of VistaVision? A 24×36 motion picture camera system used by Hollywood since 1953.

When I work for Apogee, we used 5 VistaVision Butterfly cameras to shoot EFX for “Star Trek, The Movie”.

  • You shouldn’t label a post with “New Camera” and “Canon 60D”… No, you just should not do it… ;-)

  • Ya, but you just know the 5D3 will be everything the 5D2 should have been in the first place, all the 7D functions in FF.

And finally leave the crappy 5D2 AF system in the dust.

  • @Dmitry – RE: You can’t imagine what bokeh, what colors and what dynamic range can it offer.

Bokeh, sure – 1.6x the effective aperture as it pertains to DoF. But – color and dynamic range? Check DxOMark – the 5DII offers a *whopping* 7% better color depth, and a *stupendous* 1.7% better dynamic range. 1.7%. Wow. You can’t imagine how **not** blown away by those factors I am…

Certainly, noise performance against ISO is far, far better with the 5DII.

    http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/eng/Image-Quality-Database/Compare-cameras/(appareil1)/305|0/(appareil2)/329|0/(onglet)/0/(brand)/Canon/(brand2)/Canon

  • do you even know how barnack invented the 35 mm cameras? He made it by joining two video films.

  • That last time Canon Released something exciting, Film was involved in the equation.

I wonder if Canon has become the “Toyota” of the camera world. Boring Stuff that have some serious issues.

well, I’m a Satisfied Canon (10 different bodies) and Toyota (4 different cars) user. So, What that will make me ? :p

  • @neuroanatomist

From your comment I can see that you’ve never used one. I don’t care about the numbers, I care about what I get and what difference can I see in the picture. You’re wasting too much time on studying the numbers.

  • And you’re a snot, who’d probably be hard pressed to tell the difference between a shot with a 40D and 5DII at less than 8×10 print size.

  • folks, it’s summer. matter what rumor comes around…enjoy the weekend, go out and push the exposure button once again…

  • Did you even see the world cup? All What you see is black lenses. It is like if Nikon have invaded South Africa!!

  • oh I can. In 50% of the shots I make I will be able to tell the difference on a screen or on a 8×6 inch print size. Beacuse of the difference in bokeh. And that difference is huge. Its not just DOF control, it’s the effect. You just can’t get that effect on a crop, only on a film or FF (maybe something close on 1.3, but I’ve never tried it). And regarding DR I will be able to tell the difference in cases with strong shadows and light, if you would put them side by side, shooting raws of-course and let a good software automatically fix the shadows (e.g. Aperture).

  • I have both a 40D and a 5DII.

The 40D is a great camera, but the 5DII is better in every way except FPS and auto focus performance. Plus you get full benefit from all of your FF lenses, and HD video (which is fun).

There will always be better bodies coming along. It is best to invest in FF lenses, and it is best to use them to full advantage now. That means 5DII for me, and probably 5DIII when it comes out, unless there is a compelling small body APS-H released or the autofocus isn’t upgraded in 5DIII.

  • VistaVision is very unusual these days. It hasn’t been used much since about 1960 because those big frames are too expensive.

I’m not arguing that there aren’t any bigger formats in use, just that *most* films are shot on a format that is more like APS-C in size.

  • Bokeh is determined by the lens and the shape of the aperture, not the size of the sensor. That is why Leica lens uses 10 to 12 blades to give you a almost perfect round aperture for excellent bokeh. On the opposite end, Canon 50mm f1.8 II uses 5 blades and ends up a pentagon aperture with bad Bokeh.

  • World cup – the height of boredom. Seriously – 2 points in an entire game? I can’t imagine how they could possible make a game any LESS interesting or exciting.. I tried watching the game yesterday (USA vs England) and watching water evaporate is more exciting.

  • yes, it does. But the FF makes bokeh smaller and the details that are out of focus looks absolutely different to those on the crop. Try it first. See the difference. Then – Argue.

  • There are a lot of people buying DSLR’s for video. Just because you don’t, dont’ assume everyone else thinks the same way you do.

  • couldn’t agree more. come to australia and watch some aussie rules. best game ever!

  • They’re called “goals”…but I have to agree that this soccerball thing has no future. It will always be a niche sport that will never have any mass appeal. Unlike the Baseball World Series–now there’s something the whole planet gets excited about! Woot, woot! Go Dolphins!

  • Agreed! :)

Soccer is the most popular sport in the whole world and its popularity is increasing every year. :)

  • I’ve seen plenty of Canon lenses too, it used to be a bit more, but Canon lenses are still predominant.

  • Fill. It’s sunny out. When the player makes some crazy expression after winning a match, if his face is in deep shadows and the back of his head is in bright sunlight you’re going to have a problem without a fill flash to even things out.

  • don´t try to tell that to stupid americans who voted twice for a monkey like g.w. bush.

90% of all americans are dumb as a rats ass.

  • You can get the same bokeh of the FF from a APS-C by stop down the same lens by one stop. Try It. It is just a simple physics exercise. Have you ever seen the Bokeh from a 50mm f1.8 II. It is terrible. on the other hand, try any L lens on a APS-C and seen what you will get.

  • You should use a capital letter at the start of a sentence. Also, a comma would not go amiss after “retard”.

  • No actually your the F–King Retard. I was mearly comenting on the fact that Americans call this tournament the “World Series” , even though its only an American thing, the name “World series” might imply an international competition, NO international federation has ever sanctioned the series as a world championship event. Nevertheless, as only a handful of countries have national baseball leagues and, the best baseball players generally play for MLB teams, the winners of the World Series are sometimes informally referred to as “world champions” by fans, players, executives, and the media within the United States and Canada.
Also America & Canada are the only countries to officially use the name soccer instead of football. Football (soccor) is the most popular sport on the planet.

Association Football: Soccer, the world’s most popular game, has the largest fan following on the planet. Its origin is Chinese, where it was discovered by the English and is now the de facto sport in 93 countries – home to two billion people. It has 208 member nations and thus is easily the world’s richest sport. It also has the largest contingent of diehard fans, players and professional leagues in the world’s largest economy, Europe. The English Premier League and the Champions League are the most popular football leagues, with the matches shown live to half a billion people in 202 countries. Manchester United is the richest club in the world with a valuation of $1.87 billion. The FIFA World Cup is the largest and most lucrative sporting event in the world. The 2006 tournament, with 64 matches featuring 32 nations and television coverage in 214 countries, had a cumulative television audience of 26 billion people. The final between defending champions Italy and France was watched by 700 million viewers

  • I have the 7D, but I’m thinking about upgrading to a 5D mII… I want the FF, in order to use some lenses that just wont work with the 1.6x crop in studio. However, I shoot some sports and weddings and need good ISO and many FPS, therefore the 5D doesn’t have all the features I want, that the 7D has. Should I wait?? Will need to buy before November though… Do you guys think the mkIII will be out by then?

    Thank’s!

  • You left out the apostrophe in “rats ass”. (It goes before the “s”, by the way–that’s the “s” in “rats”, not “ass”.)

  • I don’t know about that. Canon lenses are older than Nikon ones. So that maybe one reason for this.

In addition, the latest canon releases outperformed the Nikon counterparts according to the reviews on the net.

Check the 70-200mm F2.8 IS II for example..

  • Agreed, Canon’s new lenses are excellent, but they sure are charging a pretty penny for them. I shudder to think how much they’ll be asking for a 24-70mm IS.
