Canon Canada has done what we knew was coming. They have redone the CPS program to come more inline with the USA and European programs.
thanks all

If I compare this to the European CPS only the name (Plantinum and Gold) is the same. For European CPS there is no fee but also (officially) no repair discount and completely other requirements

Thanks for the heads up!
Question for those of you with CPS.
Once you become a CPS member, do you have to constantly update your item list?
In my case, I constantly buy and sell gear (horrible, I know). So do I have to log in, update my files every time I do so? What happens if I send a lens in that isn’t on my account, does it still receive the free cleaning/expedited service or does it go into the regular pool?
Also, does the expedited service work on non-L lenses (17-55, 50 1.4, etc)?
Thank you!
Edit:
I know, it’s not the biggest thing in the world but I can be forgetful of stuff like this sometimes.
Interesting: I sent CR news of the Canon Europe CPS revamp and it didn’t even rate a mention here. Must be because it wasn’t USA/Canada!
No problem……..I have been a CPS (USA) member since 1990 and have gone through a lot of equipment and update my account/equipment list with CPS quite often. Since the program became a fee for membership last year, I’ve maintained the “Gold” level. This comes with a kit full of stuff (see the CPS membership site for full list of goodies), making the $100 fee easire to swallow.
Their repair facility (Irvine, CA), makes cleaning/repairs quickly and usually has my equipment back to me within the same week!
In another post here on CR, I recommended CPS members contact the CPS (USA)office requesting we get a subscription to the European produced “CPN Magazine” with out memberships. Currently, you only get one copy (I got the same issue again this year) with your annual membership/renewal package. If they receive enough requests, the told me it will give them more “ammunition” to get Canon USA to fund the magazine costs.
Although CPS (USA) does a pretty good job of supporting us, they aren’t the best at putting new/important information into our hands. For instance, the recent EOS-1D Mk IV, Guide produced by CPN, giving detailed information about the new machines Custom Function, AI Servo AF and ISO, have yet to appear in either printed or download form from CPS!
You don’t get alerts on software, firmware or announcments from them often either. As for new product announcments, I’ve only received a few.
Years ago, they published a quarterly magazine called “UPdate,” however that went away several years ago.
All in all, CPS is a great support function for Canon owners. At major sporting/photo events, they provide free loaner equipment if your’s needs cleaning/maint and offer full cleaning and ops checks for all CPS members free too.
Can the original EOS-1D or 1Ds (Mark I) still qualify as one of the cameras you need for CPS?
From the Canon Canada CPS website:
Equipment requirements:
Platinum membership requires at least 2 x 5Dmkll or better cameras and 3 x L series lenses from the eligible equipment list above. Gold membership requires 2 x 40D or better cameras and 2 x L series lenses from the eligible equipment list. Members will be required at time of application to list the equipment, along with serial numbers, that they possess and intend to be covered by CPS service policies. Members are responsible for maintaining their record of equipment, adding new gear and removing retired or sold items when necessary. Products not on the members list at the time of service request will not qualify for CPS turnaround targets or rates.
Staggeringly enough, the website seems to list all of the camera and lenses that qualify. It also has this…
“Please contact your CPS representative when in doubt. New products will be added to this list as they are released into the market and older products will be removed as their service life expires”
NO, both 1D and 1Ds are too old, even the 5D isn’t enough for Platinum.
One thing to keep in mind, that I learned just now after communicating with Canon Canada’s CPS, is that the equipment one lists on the application will primarily be used to determine eligibility. It’s not intended to be a complete list of your equipment.
Therefore two points:
– List the most impressive equipment you own.
– Once approved you’ll be able to add all of your eligible equipment to your list.
this does not make any sence they are closing down the office in montreal and calgary, and now the want 250 or 100$ for membership, what an insult to all the professional photographers in montreal and all over canada,we have no service in montreal, thats a problem,i dont want to bring nikon name up,but at least they are loyal to their users,
thats all thats it ,what stupit idea……….thats what you get from the headquarters in toronto ontario, stupit ideas that serve only the managment and their pay check……..
Still waiting here in Australia for CPS to revamp their program. According to the local CPS contacts the program will be limited to owners of 1 and 5 series cameras only. Gold level will require ownership of 1 series bodies etc.
US and Canada programs look a lot better for owners of 7D, 50D and 40D bodies.
Come on canon get it together – surely the offering should be the same wherever we shoot!
It’s much easier in Hong Kong, and it’s free. Too bad they charge elsewhere.
Direct quote from canon.com.hk “In general you should own at least 1 Professional Canon AF body (Film: EOS 5, EOS 3 & EOS-1 series; Digital: EOS 50D, 5D series, 7D & EOS-1D series)”
http://www.canon.com.hk/en/support/application/default.aspx#
Canon CPS has been awful for a very long time here in Canada. So bad in fact that I know of many Canon shooters who switched brands or put tape across the name on their bodies when covering news events as a sort of silent protest.
Now they’re charging for a service that until now has been terrible? Seeing that they improve is believing. Until then, no way Canon.
Obviously “Pana Photo” did not read the Canon Canada CPS program details properly. It doesn’t matter where you are in Canada, if you are a Platinum member you get complimentary (=free) overnight incoming and outgoing shipping. If you are a Gold member you receive subsidized incoming overnight shipping for $10.
I think that’s a pretty good deal. & the turn around time is quick or else you get a loaner. So not sure why you are complaining that there is no more offices in Calgary or Montreal.
Also, if you are a professional photographer & you own a real business, then writing off the membership fee is not a problem.
That sucks. I would think about a membership, but it makes me think twice if my 5D isn’t covered by the platinum package.
I am glad to see that they have listed my 45 and 90 TS-E lenses both as ‘L’ lenses.
Truthfully though, I can’t see spending that much each year on top of insurance costs for the very few instances where I have needed service.
Thanks for making the offer.
I would opt for the shooting great video
New site looks great
Regards
Ray
It has to be on the CPN registered list to qualify for service so I rec. you keep it current wich is not difficult.
Read the FAQ before applying and make sure you are are full-time proffessional not just a gear monger.
go to the site and read the FAQ.
then get the cheap membership even if you only do the cleanings its still an extreme value!
i will be surprised if the service improves at all
they waist threir time coming up with gread deals for i donot know who except the working photographer…
i dont want to ship my equipment to missisaga or anywhere else i want canon service here in montreal, got it……..you go ahead and ship your lences and cameras ,
nikon has a service office here for years and takes care of all needs for its pros thats what we need.
You also need to prove you’re a full time professional photographer.
How long have you been a CPS member, and how often do you get your gear cleaned? I have pretty low standards I guess, but I clean my gear myself and I get CPS pricing on new gear already. The fee for membership should still be based on people being actual working pros in my opinion, not a bunch of folks who have expensive gear who can’t maintain it themselves. I have one body that is easily over 240,000 images and it has never needed “professional” service, but on the other hand my wife’s 40D needed a new shutter after 35,000 or so images and that took two weeks returned for$240 shipping included. If I had CPS membership I would still have to pay for cleaning and repairs, plus I pay for the membership. I am just glad that the other TS-Es got “L” status so maybe a new 45 is around the corner, the 90 is fine the way it is.
