Just to summarize
The new Rebel will be the product announced on the 25th of March. It should fall into our previous spec list.

Still no definitive word on a jog wheel.

Others are speculating an articulating LCD. Could you keep the screen at 3″ and make it articulating on that small body?

Lenses
I'm asking around about a possible lens introduction, nothing yet.

Someone did say that perhaps Canon would launch a “Movie Lens” type of thing. It would be kitted with the new Rebel. Panasonic has done this with the GH1, so that's probably where the idea came from. I think we're still too early into the DSLR movie mode development for that sort of thing.

  • So how would a 500d be “we’ve saved the best in our spring collection for the 25th” shouldn’t it be the new 1Ds?

Any chance of them upgrading the firmware on all live view cameras to shoot video? I’d imagine it’s possible just through software. And with the current price increases across the range they might need to add a new “free” feature to remain competitive.

They might even be able to generate more cash from doing this with a cable for syncing video to portable audio recorders?

  • Daft question I’m sure but.. What’s a movie lens?

I’m still happy with my 400d but I’ll keep my fingers crossed that other want to move to this new camera instead of making the jump to full frame.. Hopefully it will lower the price of second hand 5d’s even more!

  • Another Rebel with a disappointing 15 MP APS-C sensor, some silly swivel LCD and movie mode. What’s so hot about that?

    Pfffft….

  • I would guess so.

Full Frame Consumer DSLRs will come … one day … maybe …. in the medium future.

  • I would like to see some serious fight out of Canon. I would love to make my next camera a 60D or 5D MKIII or 6D, whatever they call it. I currently own a 40D.

The new Rebel will be a fore-telling for the cameras above and I hope and pray for an articulated LCD but I would also like to see some added focus points with the new pro-sumer cameras that will be announced hopefully soon.

Canon seems to be falling behind the curve compared to Nikon and even Sony. I’m too invested into Canon to change up but if I were to start over I would have to give Nikon a serious look despite not really liking how their controls work, something I’m sure I’ll get use to though.

  • ‘So how would a 500d be “we’ve saved the best in our spring collection for the 25th” shouldn’t it be the new 1Ds?’

maybe because the ID update is not coming yet (especially this spring) ?

This guys are incredible, you can build your own digital movie or still camera.. you get to choose your sensor (they call it brain) , your grip or grips… a CF card module or a solid state drive… you can pick a screen or a viewfinder… the prices range between 2.5k and 55k
you can pick the lens mount, so you can use film lenses.. or nikon lenses…. canon lenses…
    they have a full frame 35mm sensor… or full frame 6×4.5 sensor… also a 6x17cm sensor… bigger than anything else…
You can even shot .raw at 250 frames per second @ 2k resolution non stop.
You can also configure the camera using two sensors and two lenses to make stereoscopic pictures or movies
I highly recommend that you people take a look at this…

    Cheers.

  • “Could you keep the screen at 3″ and make it articulating on that small body?”

Sure, Panasonic Lumix GH1 have already done it…

And even more, Panasonic allows Manual Control in the Full HD 1080p Movie mode, and also offer a HD 720p at 60fps

This reminds the so much requested features improvements for the 5D Mark II

    – In case you are interested to suggest improvements for Movie & Still mode, check the Petition to Canon:

  • Yeah, Red is interesting but it seems bulky not mention not released. By the time you have it configured to something usable I shutter at the thought of the price.

  • I feel you… i couldn’t believe that I got a 2008 manufactured 5D with a 2 year warranty from Henry’s for under 1100 shipped! Im loving it :D

  • Do they actually exist? I thought it was still not in production? I feel a bit sorry for RED cause they’ll be obsolete if Canon sort it out and own the pro video market on the back of HD SLR’s.

An all canon workflow for FX shoots would be pretty interesting – shooting HDR’s for CGI and the footage on the same camera.

  • yeah, I doubt they’d give the 500D features that sweet. Though lately Canon seems to have come to thier senses with the SX1 and raw. Maybe they’ll announce a new firmware for 5d2 too?

  • Well, I’ll console myself that in a game of konkers, my metal 50D would clobber the plastic … new thing to pieces. Other than the solid body, the 6 FPS, we’ll need to wait and see the complete feature list to see if micro adjustments are there.

  • I would believe it if it said [C5]. ” Probably true “, not good enough.

That’s assuming. And when you assume, you make an a$$ out of you, and me…

I Dare you to go out on a limb and change it to ( 5 ). Put your arse on the on the line. Then I will concide and believe.

    Well……..?

  • Am I the only one sick of the megapixel race? It is like the megahertz race of the 90’s. Megapixles mean very little in the scheme of things. I wish they would focus on increasing ISO, noise, and other features instead of just cramming as many pixels as possible into the sensor. As the pixels get smaller the low light shooting it going to take a hit.

  • “”Am I the only one sick of the megapixel race? I””

You should love this mega-pixel game… I think once we passed 6MP we were in a good place with the 10D or the 60 way back. However, It’s a physics matter…. It’s great that they keep adding pixels cause this will drive them to use a larger sensors across the board to maintain quality with mega-pixel growth…. Small senors have a limit to how many pixels you can squeeze in a little chip. So the indirect positive is we get a FF or near that which all photography ( 35mm ) was until 8 years ago. Depending on your age, you might not understand this. Us 35mm photographers for 40 years had a 36X24mm negative frame as all consumer good to crap cameras had. There was no you get full frame 35mm and you don’t. APS 35mm doesn’t count, It came and went. All lenses were made to achieve that circles of lens image projection. All this changed when digital SLR’s started to become a mainstream offering at the 2 to 3k range.

So embrace this, it will return us back to how it was pre-digital…

  • Dammit! Was really praying for the new 1D, although I knew it wasn’t going to happen :)

Let’s just hope that the 2010 prediction for that series doesn’t come through.

  • Dear Lord,

I know you came through and dropped that nearly New XSI with kit lens in my lap for $300 plus Tax at the Pawn Shop and for that, I say thanks again. But I’m in desparate need again. I NEED the new Rebel to have an articulating screen. I don’t care if it’s 2.5″, just make it flip out, up, down, whatever mysterious ways you want it. If you do this for me, I’ll take back all those things I said about you when you messed up and killed my Nikon 5400 (also with an articulating screen). Yeah, you really blew that one, God. Thanks alot. I loved that camera and you snatched it away from me. Did you enjoy seeing me cry? Feel guilty, Mr. Almighty? Good. You should. Please come through this time and make a brother happy.

    Fred.

  • BTW, for all you nay-sayers on the articulating screen, Canon CAMCORDERS virtually all have a 2.7″ widescreen articulating LCD. I don’t think Canon would go with a 3″ when they have bins full of 2.7″ lcd’s just waiting for Obama to turn the world economy around and raise Jesus from the dead again.

  • OOPS!!! That’s how we spell in Alpha centura….. ;-/

    Earth way:( concede )

It’s just an error like this whole prediction is…..

  • A movie lens has special – fluid – zoom mechanicals so that it doesn’t produce noise/vibration while zooming or focusing.

  • Fred,

I did not mess up when I killed your Nikon, indeed it was the only way to point you at the right path, and your blasphemy will be forgiven when you buy your first L-lens.

As to the articulating screen, well as they say – I work in mysterious ways.

    Cheers,

    God

  • Wow, God usually tells me to buy more ammo. He also told me to sell ALL of my Pentax film gear and buy a Digital Rebel XT. That was a good move. Believe it or not, my wife’s KODAK V570 just died. I’m buying her a Panasonic Lumix FX35 to replace it. Listen, God, Canon (one in the same in some’s book), build a Canon Point-n-Shoot with a 24mm equiv. lens and we will buy it. Please, if you’re pushing the “50x Zoom”, push it towards the WIDE ANGLE first. Gah, sometimes He listens to me.

  • agreed on the 15MP being silly but the tilt screen is an amazing help if you want to shoot video…
I hate live view in general (only use it for macro) but owning a 5D2 the rare time I shoot video I really wish it had a screen I could see…

  • Obama and Jesus? Bringing up politics *and* religion in the same post? Tsk tsk tsk. Let’s keep talking Canon here.

  • explain where either of those companies is ahead – if you owned one of those cameras you’d be saying the same thing just like they do in the nikon forums and for gods sake – SONY? do they still make SLR’s? That A900 is atrocious above 800 and no video and a 2200 dollar 70-200 and and 1800 dollar 24-70. what makes those so special?

  • Making the live view LCD tilt would be worthwhile even if they have to make it slightly smaller in the process. One of the main points of live view is to enable you to check focus etc. when it would be impossible or extremely uncomfortable to get your eye to the viewfinder. I’m thinking mainly of tripod shots in odd locations (e.g. camera a few inches above the water of a river/lake, or pointing almost vertically up for a picture of a tall building) or holding the camera above some obstacle.

  • If the new Rebel makes movies, has ISO 3600 and has a bigger body, I’ll buy it.

Anyone knows if the 40D/50D autofocus is better than the Rebel line?

  • ISO 3200
Body size won’t be bigger, they keep the rebels small on purpose

Yes, the 40D/50D have aq much improved centerpoint, it does both cross and diagonal motion tracking, but to my knowledge the rest of the points are the same. So the 40D/50D focus is a bit better than the rebels, though not amazingly so.

  • Because the Rebel cameras are Canon’s main source of income in the DSLR sector. They sell these by the truckloads. If they put in the awful 50D 15 MP APS-C sensor in the next Rebel without any improvement whatsoever, it’ll be a shame ‘cos people will stop buying the Rebel. Anyway, Canon deserves to go downhill for refusing to heed consumer needs.

  • That I never would have believed!

Had the 450d already in my shopping basket. But now of course I wait to see what Canon will bring.
    What do you think?
How much will the new Rebel cost?
