There may be a lens launch for the T1/2000D in June.
Following Nikon and Sigma’s lead, Canon could be ready to launch a replacement of their 35 f/2 and 50 f/1.4 lenses.
EF 35 f/1.8 USM
EF 50 f/1.4 USM
It was suggested there’s a possibility the 35 may be an EF-S mount.
The 35L replacement will be coming with a pro body.

EF 35mm f/1.8 USM
If true, it will be my next lense!
ugh….when are we going to see a 200-500/5.6 IS to replace the aging 100-400…or maybe something that goes out to 600! Come on canon, quit shuffling your feet and do something bold and exciting
new pro body in June?!?!
No. Rumor says 35mm f/1.8 in june, but 35mm 1.4 L (II) will be announce along with a pro body sometimes in the future.
Announcements like these are why I love this site. I was literally about to buy a 50mm 1.4 today or tomorrow, but now I’ll sit tight and wait for the new one to come out. The current model is so good that I’m not going to wait for reviews or anything. When the new 50mm 1.4 comes out, I’m just going to buy it right away because I know it will be spectacular.
I just wonder to go for actual Canon EF 50mm f/1,4 USM (I use both manual EOS-3 and digital), thus need EF mount. Would it be a direct replacement though?
finally… (maybe).
To be fair, it’s not an announcement, it’s a rumor. Hence the site name. Replacement for the 50 1.4 will come, but it could be 6 months or 16 years.
Oh please, get a *good* affordable 50mm out. I can’t afford the L, but can’t afford cr*p either. I want one just so I have something usable and lightweight when I don’t want lug around the brick.
Does anyone know if the XSi is being discontinued? I had an XSi in my Amazon cart for a while and was going to purchase it in a week or 2 but it’s now saying that delivery would be 1-4 weeks. I’ve done a further search on Amazon and they only have resellers…Amazon itself isn’t selling any! :S
If anyone has any insight into this please let me know.
Thanks!
The only thing they need to do on the 50mm 1.4 II is use a real USM instead of a “micro” USM. I hope to God they don’t raise the price too much. I’ll settle for $400 tops!
That is my no1 concern. The performance wide open could be improved as well; the old one is very dreamy.
Really? used with a 40D, I felt that at full aperture this 50mm lens was soft, and that bokeh was very unpleasant.
The current 50mm f/1.4, does not have any aspherical element, as opposed to more recent optical equations used in 50mm lenses from Leica, Voigtlander or Sigma.
Clearly, this Canon 50mm f/1.4 is not up-to-date.
Of course if you don’t mind waiting till the 2000D launch rumored to be in June then you will at least know if the rumor that a 50 1.4 II is on its way soon has any truth. I know I can wait. I also know I’d be first in line for the upgrade. :D
Yup – me too! I’d rush and get one the minute it hits the shelves.
Not quite an announcement though – looks like just a rumor for now. If you wanted to go out today and buy a 50/1.4 you’re likely out of luck – it’s been in short supply for months. Ditto for the 30/2.
I’ve been eyeing up the Sigma 50/1.4 and I’m intrigued by the bokeh and sharpness/contrast wide open. However it’s huge, it’s more expensive, and there’s the AF issue. I’m holding out for now to see what Canon comes up with next.
The current 50 1.4 is $400.
Don’t we already have a EF 50 f/1.4 USM? Maybe the “II” is missing from the post above.
And what sense would 35mm make if it were an EF-S mount? Wouldn’t you rather get one of the EF 50s?
I guess the aim is to offer an alternative to classic 50mm on 1.6x bodies.
35/2.0 and 28/1.8 do that already. Obviously 35/2 has a very poor design, 5 aperture blades (yuk) but is way better built than the plastic 50/1.8 II (anyone remember the older version?). An update would be nice, though. I feel more strongly about 50/1.4 as I just don’t like / need such wideangles.
The question is would Canon release a truly good lens for an “entry level” market? I am afraid if 50/1.4 was an excellent performer very little people would buy the 1.2L
They would buy the 1.2L if it wasn’t so dang squirrelly – they still have some tinkering to do on that one – fast, but all over the road.
The price of the 50mm 1.4 for the most part use to be consistently around $325. Only recently did they raise the price, and you’ll see this all cross the board with other lenses as well. One article stated that Canon cut productions to adjust for the demands.

honestly the current 50 1.4 is fair at best…beaten by the Sigma in every way and in sharpness matched or surpassed by the 1.8. I wish Canon would work on making lenses that are sharp through the entire aperture range including wide open rather than making faster lenses.
I really believe an EF-S 35/1.8 will be affordable, light and a fun lens to mount on an entry DSLR. Its like converting a backup Rebel to a DP2-ish camera.
Canon already has similar equivalent lenses, but due to competition releasing better designs, perhaps C is pressured to update as well. APS-C market is where volume sales is.
That also means the design team are busy with mass market lenses rather than the L refreshes.
I can pretty much *guarantee* there will be a 50/1.4 II in the near future, since I just bought the old model.
the current 35mm f/2 is nice and sharp but it’s aging design is as noisy as a matchbox of noisy wasps.
my sigma 30mm is lovely but it could be smaller. i’d love a compact little canon with USM. c’mon c’non!
That’s good news, I am glad I didn’t pull the trigger on the Sigma 30 1.4 recently. Now, if it was just CR2. ;-)
Sign me up for the 35 1.8. Let’s just hope its not totally “el cheapo” as the nifty-fifty, has USM with FTM and is below 300€.
Or below 200€ without USM.
If these are true, I can’t wait to pounce on them… together with a new 60D… :)
Once you read documentation about lens design (and among other things about the reasons Zeiss/Leica are considered as the best lens designers), you realise that Canon’s lens design is really… mild.
But most consumers dont care so much, and the rest of us are used to reviews such as “this lens is somewhat soft at full-aperture, but it gets very sharp at f5.6”.
Of course, in the 70s lens started integrating complex systems such as auto-focus mechanism and later stabilisation, but today’s priority should be optical perfection (at least for prime lenses, dammit!).

In my experience cheapest time of year to buy new glass is always around the holidays. This time of year, even with the rebates tends to be expensive. Anyone else confirm or deny?
Agree. I would buy the 50 1.2L if I didn’t hear so much about the design issues and the review sites held it in higher esteem. They don’t however, and you bet I am not into $1700 of glass for lukewarm reviews. No one is going to buy unless they absolutely demand the sharpest pictures from f1.2-2.0.
Doh! I JUST bought the Sigma 50mm 1.4 yesterday! Hmmm… B&H does have a 15-day return policy…
lol yea. Just boughta used 1.4 off FM forums
If it is good then definitely keep it. But if it front / back – focuses then return it (you know how to test it, right?). I tried a couple in a shop and they didn’t work.
These are old and outdated lenses. The 35mm f/2 is optically OK but has an ancient AF motor with 5-bladed diaphragm, while the 28mm f/1.8 is pretty soft wide open with soft edges throughout. Both are overpriced for what they offer.
How do I test it?
Here’s a silly question but since I am fairly new to this…Don’t be too unkind!!! If you have a ef 50mm f1.2 and ef 50mm f1.4. If you set them both at f2.8 for instance would they both give the same exposure or would the 1.2 being a larger diameter lense allow more light through in the same amount of time? Secondly given the same aperture setting of f2.8 would you expect a noticable difference in the resulting image and has anyone actually tested this out?
I love my 50 1.8 II, but on my cropped sensor, it can’t be an everyday lens. I’m really leaning toward a normal prime for the 1.6x cameras. If it was plastic.. that might even be better, it’ll be lighter =) i’ll hold out as long as i can for the 35/f2 replacement.
What is the obsession with normal lenses? I almost never use a normal range focal length. Always something wide or tele
I am so much interested in photography but not a proffesional though…but my dream was to click real good pics..so after a long time research I decided to buy an slr which is really easy to use and worth the money and just right I found can rebel Xsi and I really feel it was worth every penny I spent and I love it….
