Flex TT5 & MiniTT1 Review
The fine folks at Strobist have posted their review of the new pocket wizard products.
Needless to say there is a lot of excitement about the product.
I’m mostly excited because of the small size. My only gripe with my PocketWizards has been the giant antenna. These will fit nicely in a very small space.
The big feature upgrade? These things do remote TTL. The units are brand specific and the first ones will be available for Canon.

New PocketWizard Manual: PocketWizard FlexTT5/Mini 1 Manual
Pricing? MiniTT1$199 and FlexTT5 $219
I will say the only thing I don’t like about the new PocketWizards is their new name. Couldn’t just call them the “Flex1” and “Mini1”?

Sweet.
Does this mean the multimax and plus transceivers will go down in price?
Double sweet
We can all thank RadioPopper for giving PocketWizard the needed kick in the hind quarters necessary to produce a new, useful product with the introduction of their PX lineup.
Hopefully RP will get the JrX’s out the door soon, because PW just crushed the PX on price (for new users, anyway; no ST-E2 required).
If you want to work with flash-ratios you still have to have a Flash or ST-E2 on top of the miniTT1.
Jr doesn’t support TTL.
Doesn’t support the 5D Mark II.
This is great news I own 4 canon Flashes, 3 430ex’s and a 580 EX II. Never been happy
with the performance of the IR system. This is a great option. although to get the most
out of it you need to drop a grand. 1 Mini and 4 remotes.
But still a vast improvement.
Don’t have a 5D MkII yet the compatibility issue seems to be the pass through from
the camera to the flash for on camera shooting… might be a voltage issue. But from
the manual it seems as though if you have a mini and a remote it should work with the flash off the camera.
An issue but not life altering.
I really like that it is flash ROM update-able. THis bodes well for fixing the 5D MkII issue
and what ever is likely to come up in the future.
I’m aware of that. The problem is, the PX series will be a tough sell now that this product is available, especially once they can accommodate Nikon shooters.
Hence, why I think they need to get the Jr out soon; they need a solid revenue source, and within a few months, I suspect the PX kit won’t be it.
I’m not sure why you say its not compatible with the 5D MK II??
From the Manual
The MiniTT1/FlexTT5 are E-TTL II compatible with these Canon cameras:
DSLR Cameras 1Ds MKIII, MKII, 1D MKIII, MKII, 1D MKII N
5D, 5D MKII
20D, 30D2, 40D, 50D
Rebel XT/350D, Rebel XTi/400D, Rebel XS/1000D,
Rebel XSi/450D

he MiniTT1/FlexTT5 are E-TTL II compatible with these Canon flashes:
Flash Units 580EX, 580EX II, 430EX, 430EX II
It’s already February 17th in Asia-Australia, where are the news??
wrong – the only thing it doesn’t support on the 5D2 is the flash in the hotshoe on top of the transmitter…

when you put a Flash on top of the miniTT1 on the 5d MII, the system will not function. Pocketwizard says they will fix this threw firmware upgrade, who says they will. I’m still gonna use my ebay triggers, their cheap and work with each brand.
Thanks, I found it. On Rob Galbraith Site. He has been using them for a few months as a beta tester.
Of these models, there are two with limitations. First, Auto Power Off must be disabled in the 30D or remote triggering won’t be possible after this camera automatically powers down. Second, it’s not possible to use a flash in the hot shoe of a MiniTT1 or FlexTT5 attached to a 5D Mark II (the new PocketWizards operate fine with this camera when no flash is in their shoe). LPA Design anticipates being able to correct this through a firmware update sometime in the months ahead.
there’s no af assist light as on ST-E2???
how should I suppose to auto focus in nightclub environments with this units?
Doesn’t COMPLETELY work on the 5D Mark II. I wouldn’t rush to buy this until they release another revision.
This is right here, in the present, not the future.
Thank you for the sensible critique. Me & my neighbour were preparing to do some research about that. We got a good book on that matter from our local library and most books where not as influensive as your information. I am very glad to see such information which I was searching for a long time. This made very glad!
Good job! Great post!
Would these units, the MiniTT1 and FlexTT5 work on a Canon T2i?
