It may not wait
I received new information from a couple of sources regarding a new Rebel for PMA. Both sources claim that a new dslr is definitely coming, and the Rebel will be it.
1D3n/1D4
There will be no new pro camera body for PMA they both say as well.
Neither had any information in regards to new lenses.
Waterproof Camera [CR2]
Is Canon going to wise up and release a waterproof/shockproof camera for PMA? One of the sources thinks so.
Panasonic recently launched one and I’m willing to bet Olympus is going to lose a ton of sales because of it (SD Cards instead of xD).
There’s nothing defininitive at this time.

Looks like Nikon is releasing a D400 which will finally expand the difference between the 50D and the nikon Dxxx cams – wish (and i know this is a broken record by now) Canon would come with a 7d (xxd class cam with full frame) and a 3d (pro level working af and build in a smaller than 1 series chassis). I would honestly at this point love to see them abandon efs except for rebels. As someone that sells the cameras I know that many people buying the xxd class buy FF glass to go with it thinking about future upgrades. Canon only builds 4 efs lenses so they are not nearly as committed to it as nikon is –
moving much of the line to FF would give them a big advantage.
With the mp in the 15 – 21 mp range these days you don’t even need any kind of crop in camera – you could simply crop post shot and still have more than enough for print…
JC
If the D400 is really 15 MP, I am very keen to find out how the new Rebel sensor stacks up to it. DPReview has been slamming high pixel density sensors. Let’s see if their biasness shows this time round… ;)
Wow,,, I have a 30D for me, but we are on our second Olympis waterproof now 720sw and 1040sw,, great for Hawaii and for Skiing/snowboarding when you can just whip it out and shoot some “snapshots” or decent video,,
Trust the kids with it and all,,, Canon hopefully has seen the light,,,
too many rebels and not much different

…….I think you just described the 5D, and if you’re thinking a less expensive version, this would have been it if it were possible.
new Rebel = 500D ?!
“Canon only builds 4 efs lenses so they are not nearly as committed to it as nikon is”
More committed than you think – they make six.

I hope and believe that the crop camera lines will continue.
BTW, I count 7 EF-S lenses. (I believe the 18-55mm non IS is discontinued so I didn’t list it.)
Lets hope they listen to customers.
10-22mm EF-S
17-85mm IS EF-S
17-55 IS EF-S
18-55mm IS EF-S
18-200mm IS EF-S
60mm macro EF-S
55-250mm IS EF-s
No new 1 series??
F*CK SAKE
offtopic : I wonder why Fake Chuck Westfall stopped posting. Cr, do you know?
Yep. If the only DSLR is another xxD it will be a major damp squib. The 1DIII needs an update much more so than the entry level.
Fake Chuck says hi everybody!
We need a 1D Mk IV badly Canon!
A 1-series camera with 10mp in 2009?
Come on, ya’ll can do better than that!
Maybe they are trying to replace the 450D as fast as possible due to all the auto focus issues people are reporting
so many rebels, so little revolution.
you are right I forgot about the macro and the 18-200 which is a complete dog…
if they make a new rebel i would prefer it to be built along the lines of the d90 – slightly bigger thus leaving the 1000/xs as the true entry level and smallest cameras they make.
I doubt they will but that is what I’d like. Not big – just slightly bigger with a wheel on the back – the way the d90 is a mini d300/400 I’d like the new rebels to be mini 50d and then the entry level would be the xs class
one word — Booooo
wooooooo!!!
seems that’s what the rumors of the 500D are pointing towards- the digic iv and face recognition should improve things.
Sounds great! I just hope whatever new Rebel they release supports high-res video recording (at least 640×480, but hopefully 720p). I understand that P&S cameras are in another league from DSLRs due to tiny sensor sizes, etc. But it’s a shame that even the cheaper P&S cameras offer video recording whereas almost no DSLRs do. I believe a camera should be primarily for taking pictures, but you don’t know when you’ll need to shoot video until the moment comes when you need it and you realize that your beautiful DSLR won’t let you….
Imagine having a DSLR that takes perfect pictures of your baby, but having nothing but still pictures of his first steps as opposed to a video. Same goes for a lot of other situations I could think of right away.
>I understand that P&S cameras are in another league from DSLRs due to tiny sensor sizes, etc.
Moreover, (Canon) P&S use CCD sensors rather than the CMOS sensors used in their DSLR range. Given that CCD are not susceptible to the ‘jello-cam’ effect, they are arguably superior for capturing video clips.
Can you imagine the weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth when babies first steps are all over the place because daddy panned the camera? ;)
And don’t forget how hard they’ve been working to perfect this baby:
EF-S 18-55mm
EF-S 18-55mm II
EF-S 18-55mm USM
EF-S 18-55mm USM II
EF-S 18-55mm IS
You can bet that it will be an XSi with video capabilities.
What was the original release price of the XSi last year? (I mean actual price at online stores, not list price as that’s usually much higher)
I’d love to buy a Rebel with video but I’d be scared off if it’s very expensive.
I think they were initially selling for $799 ($899 w/18-55IS).
It will be nothing but:
15MP just like the 50D
640*480 video with a possible 720p to compete with Nikon D90, 1080p reserved for the more expensive bodies as a selling point.
Audio plug for mic? I sure hope so or it will be severely crippled.
Same lame 9pt AF sensor
Same lame Tunnel Viewfinder
Faster CF card writes
Silver/black models.
ISO 3200 maybe 6400.
If Nikon pulls a fast one, this new Rebel will be outclassed at launch time like the 40D was 15mo ago.
But isn’t the Rebel supposed to be a lower-end line for Canon? I don’t see why they would need to compete with the D90. If this was a new release from the x0D line, then maybe…
(forgive me if I’m totally lost as I’m just getting started on the DSLR world)
For someone who claims he sells cameras, you don’t seem very well informed (which is consistent with my own experience, very few gear salesmen are worth the added markup).
APS-C/EF-S advantages:
1) cheaper, both body and lens (might not seem important anymore these days with FF coming down in price, but still it is more affordable for a large number of people). In addition, the cropped sensor can be read faster and it achieves high frame rate for a low price – how many people do you think would afford to buy a 6.5fps full frame camera?
2) gear size – which is in my opinion the most important. EF-S lenses are smaller and easier to carry around (ever try EF 24-70mm as a walk-around lens?)
3) frame size – yes, shockingly, many experienced photographers prefer the crop format. Why, you ask? Because 90% of their work fits the cropped format frame: wildlife, sports, macro etc. Having to crop/recompose 90% of the shots in post-processing would be unbearable for most serious shooters.
Oh, and you were saying Canon only makes 4 EF-S lenses? Camera salesman you say, eh? Jeez…
Sorry, that should read ‘xxxD’, not “xxD” :(
I REALLY would like to see, and buy, a 3D body.
I’m not satisfied with the 5D Mark II.
There is enough gap between 1D and 5D where a 3D can perfectly fit, offering improvements over 5D Mark II in a smaller body than 1D (or just without the built-in grip)
— Some IMPROVEMENTS & FEATURES for Canon 3D could be:
BODY:
. Weather sealed
. Faster mirror return
. Shutter cycle of 200,000
. some extra buttons to allow direct acces to most used functions or settings
. Directional control inside the back Control Dial (Nikon style) -many people can like this, and many dislike, BUT Canon P&S cameras already have it, AND if well designed with enough size, IT WORKS GREAT and Much Easier than actual separated directional control and dial, like 5D MK II’s
. One DEDICATED button (or Dial Mode) to enter in Movie Mode !!
. Two memory slots if possible
DISPLAY:
. 3.5″ Would be a GREAT upgrade, even better thinking on Movie/Video recording
SENSOR:
. PLEASE IMPROVE Sensor QUALITY, More “clean” sensor. Reduce Hot Pixels that appears even at fast shutter speeds and low ISO.
. Reduce the ammount of Stuck Pixels (that are not likely to be remapped in Movie mode, thus need camera or sensor exchange)
. IMPROVE Quality Control !! Many customers received cameras with “dirty” sensors, or with many stuck pixels that needed camera exchange
. INCLUDE a Self-Mapping feature to remap hot pixels by the user !! It IS SO ueful! and will reduce the times that Canon tech service has to do it for the customers
BUT AGAIN, improve its quality to reduce the ammount of them!!)
. 21MP is very good to keep noise under control and get excellent high resolution photographs
. FAST Readout of the sensor data, to reduce the “Rolling shutter” issue in Movie mode.
PROCESSOR:
. DIGIC IV (or V), with Fast readout, for Movie, and for faster photograph processing
FEATURES:
. Better AF system (PLEASE test it thoroughtly well, NO 1D’s issues please !!)
. In-camera Chromatic Aberration Correction (SO HANDY when shooting JPGs)
. up to 9 frames for BRACKETING !! (it costs Canon nothing to include it in Firmware..)
. Self-timer for Mirror lock-up mode
. IMPROVE AF in LiveView !
MOVIE Mode with:
. FULL MANUAL CONTROLS !! (just watch thousands of customers requesting it on the 5D MK II…)
. 24 to 30fps in standard frame rates (one only setting is not enough for versatility, it can highly compromise or slow down the project workflow)
. One DEDICATED Button (or Dial Mode) for Movie!!
. IMPROVED AF while Recording Movie (thus LiveView mode too)
. FOCUS ASSISTANCE SYSTEM while recording Movie (VERY useful, specially when using narrow Depth-of-Fields with so critical focus range)
. MIC-IN jack, with Auto AND Manual level of the recorded audio!!
VIEWFINDER:
. 0.80x Magnification (some SLR had these level of magnification, that was GREAT)
. Red square when Focus is achieved (great, keep them!!)
. Vertical metering bar (with 6 stops of metering: -3 to +3 EV) at the Left side of the frame (right eye has more visual field at its left side)
. BIGGER Display information inside the ViewFinder below the frame, USE the full horizontal space to make it bigger and more visible !!
. ON-demand grid lines (exchanging focusing screns is obsolete)
. Include arrows to indicate focus direction when Manual Focusing
Etc…
The Movie mode is clearly a BIG selling feature, and increases Canon’s sales without a doubt (just see so many 5D Mark II out of stock in so many stores).
This will attract Pro Videographers and Amateurs as well due to its well known advantages and benefits over camcorders and videocameras.
Manufacturers realized this is already a must-have feature for DSLRs from the entry-level to the almost-Pro-Level.
Discarding this feature can be a big mistake and take in reduction of sales for a specific DSLR model.
Competition, marketing, demands, don’t stop, and sometimes customers don’t forgive
(PS: sorry if this post appears duplicated, it didn’t show up after 2 tries)
If Canon arnt releasing a new 1D3n it might mean they are going to release a substantial replacement later in the year or early next year. Maybe the 1D4 or 3D with FullFrame and new autofocus?? Although i would like a new 1D now, it might be better if they did not rush with it, as the current 1D3 is still a very capable Camera.
Sorry I would touch a 1D3, still have my 2Ns. the 1D3 is to Canon what Tylenol was in the early 80s. If don’t know what that means, look it up. Just too many other professionals I work beside have or are in the process of switching to Nikon. Last NCAA basketball event I worked, 8 of the 11 photographers were Nikon, including AP, New York Post.
Since when have you ever met a camera salesman who is well informed?
the new 1D will come out this year… and it’ll be fine and all the crying will stop… now how about some nice lens anouncements? I’m still dreaming of a 200-500/5.6 IS with optics like the 70-200/4 IS…. I’d drop my 400/5.6 prime in a heart beat… and probably start selling plasma and whatever else I can to afford it :P
Squeeze out a kidney and you could pick up that new EF 800 f/5.6 IS and a 1DsMkIII as well! ;)
i guess you amazingly enough speak for all photographers and not the 150 or so shooters I talk to each week…
and you are right – i forgot the 18-200 garbage and the 60 macro which no one buys….
I don’t carry the 24-70 since it’s one of my least fave L lenses…I carry the 35 and 135 L’s as well as the 100 macro and 16-35 when i need it (not often)
If frame size is such an advantage then why are so many people begging for FF?
lol…wow, i didn’t know mine would be worth that much… I am a gradstudent after all and my diet and ummm, beverage choices leave something to be desired :P …. you’ve got me thinkg ;)
New ST-E2 transmitter! Come on Canon, you are losing money to Pocket Wizard because your flash system sucks!
Boooo to movie mode. No ‘jello cam’ please.
I’m planning to buy the 450D soon, but I read somewhere that some 450D have AF problems. It’s pretty expensive here in EUROPE and I don’t know what to do. I could get a 450D with the lastest firmaware or to get a new “470D/500D” with unknow problems.. It’s always the same thing, both cameras will have their own faulty stuff..
I’m now very glad that I didn’t succumb to my sudden impulse to buy a 450D yesterday. Been thinking about getting a DSLR for awhile now, would’ve been extremely unpleased if I had and then read this!
I’d say in NYC most know what they are talking about – I also love the no link to work or any comment of any intelligence that back up your claim…
If you’re concerned about the Digital Rebel not living up to your expectations, you could always consider another manufacturer’s camera in your price range. Nikon comes to mind.
Hey Justin, I actually can’t get a Nikon because I already own a Canon 10-22 and a 17-40 :/
Yeah but since when have Canon really cared about the top end? All this focus on the lower end to get potential upraders in is all well and good, but it’s pointless if those upgraders end up buying fluff at the top end. Because then you’ll get angry customers and defectors.
In that case I hope the next Rebel lives up to your expectations. :)
In that case MXKY, pick up a 40D. I think they’re about the same price now (body only) and you will be much happier with the xxD over a xxxD or xxxxD body. After having a 40D since this past summer, I’m never moving back down to a tiny rebel.
Hi Alan, here in France, it’s really not the same price. The 450D body only is about 500 euros (645$) and the 40D body only costs 750 euros (968$).. And I find the 40D a bit too big and heavy, especially with my 17-40 and the lens hood.
I might be going against the grain here, but I’d quite like a pro body with a 1.6 crop and a few less megapixels. As someone keen on birding, I find the critical aspects of a camera are reach (hence the crop), speed and low-light response (for birds that skulk in cover). My kit now is a 40D using the 100-400mm lens, and switching to FF would mean having to fork out for a hugely expensive 600mm lens to get the same reach and maintain autofocus. I did look at the 50D, but the high ISO performance looked unusable, so I’m now looking to sacrifice a little crop for what I hope will be a 1.3 crop 1D3 successor with high ISO to match or better the 5DII. If Canon could put out a pro body with 1.6 crop, however, that would be perfect.
nikon doesn’t have a camera in that price range that can touch the canons in that range – the xs is a superior camera to the d60 never mind the xsi
