It may not wait
I received new information from a couple of sources regarding a new Rebel for PMA. Both sources claim that a new dslr is definitely coming, and the Rebel will be it.

There will be no new pro camera body for PMA they both say as well.

Neither had any information in regards to new lenses.

Waterproof Camera [CR2]

Is Canon going to wise up and release a waterproof/shockproof camera for PMA? One of the sources thinks so.

Panasonic recently launched one and I'm willing to bet Olympus is going to lose a ton of sales because of it (SD Cards instead of xD).

There's nothing defininitive at this time.

  1. It will be nothing but:

    15MP just like the 50D
640*480 video with a possible 720p to compete with Nikon D90, 1080p reserved for the more expensive bodies as a selling point.
Audio plug for mic? I sure hope so or it will be severely crippled.
    Same lame 9pt AF sensor
    Same lame Tunnel Viewfinder
    Faster CF card writes
    Silver/black models.
    ISO 3200 maybe 6400.

If Nikon pulls a fast one, this new Rebel will be outclassed at launch time like the 40D was 15mo ago.

  2. But isn’t the Rebel supposed to be a lower-end line for Canon? I don’t see why they would need to compete with the D90. If this was a new release from the x0D line, then maybe…

(forgive me if I’m totally lost as I’m just getting started on the DSLR world)

  3. For someone who claims he sells cameras, you don’t seem very well informed (which is consistent with my own experience, very few gear salesmen are worth the added markup).
    APS-C/EF-S advantages:
    1) cheaper, both body and lens (might not seem important anymore these days with FF coming down in price, but still it is more affordable for a large number of people). In addition, the cropped sensor can be read faster and it achieves high frame rate for a low price – how many people do you think would afford to buy a 6.5fps full frame camera?
    2) gear size – which is in my opinion the most important. EF-S lenses are smaller and easier to carry around (ever try EF 24-70mm as a walk-around lens?)
    3) frame size – yes, shockingly, many experienced photographers prefer the crop format. Why, you ask? Because 90% of their work fits the cropped format frame: wildlife, sports, macro etc. Having to crop/recompose 90% of the shots in post-processing would be unbearable for most serious shooters.

Oh, and you were saying Canon only makes 4 EF-S lenses? Camera salesman you say, eh? Jeez…

  4. Photographer/Videographer on

I REALLY would like to see, and buy, a 3D body.

I’m not satisfied with the 5D Mark II.

There is enough gap between 1D and 5D where a 3D can perfectly fit, offering improvements over 5D Mark II in a smaller body than 1D (or just without the built-in grip)

    — Some IMPROVEMENTS & FEATURES for Canon 3D could be:

    BODY:

    . Weather sealed

    . Faster mirror return

    . Shutter cycle of 200,000

. some extra buttons to allow direct acces to most used functions or settings

. Directional control inside the back Control Dial (Nikon style) -many people can like this, and many dislike, BUT Canon P&S cameras already have it, AND if well designed with enough size, IT WORKS GREAT and Much Easier than actual separated directional control and dial, like 5D MK II’s

. One DEDICATED button (or Dial Mode) to enter in Movie Mode !!

. Two memory slots if possible

    DISPLAY:

. 3.5″ Would be a GREAT upgrade, even better thinking on Movie/Video recording

    SENSOR:

. PLEASE IMPROVE Sensor QUALITY, More “clean” sensor. Reduce Hot Pixels that appears even at fast shutter speeds and low ISO.

. Reduce the ammount of Stuck Pixels (that are not likely to be remapped in Movie mode, thus need camera or sensor exchange)

. IMPROVE Quality Control !! Many customers received cameras with “dirty” sensors, or with many stuck pixels that needed camera exchange

. INCLUDE a Self-Mapping feature to remap hot pixels by the user !! It IS SO ueful! and will reduce the times that Canon tech service has to do it for the customers

BUT AGAIN, improve its quality to reduce the ammount of them!!)

. 21MP is very good to keep noise under control and get excellent high resolution photographs

. FAST Readout of the sensor data, to reduce the “Rolling shutter” issue in Movie mode.

    PROCESSOR:

. DIGIC IV (or V), with Fast readout, for Movie, and for faster photograph processing

    FEATURES:

. Better AF system (PLEASE test it thoroughtly well, NO 1D’s issues please !!)

. In-camera Chromatic Aberration Correction (SO HANDY when shooting JPGs)

. up to 9 frames for BRACKETING !! (it costs Canon nothing to include it in Firmware..)

    . Self-timer for Mirror lock-up mode

. IMPROVE AF in LiveView !

    MOVIE Mode with:

. FULL MANUAL CONTROLS !! (just watch thousands of customers requesting it on the 5D MK II…)

. 24 to 30fps in standard frame rates (one only setting is not enough for versatility, it can highly compromise or slow down the project workflow)

. One DEDICATED Button (or Dial Mode) for Movie!!

. IMPROVED AF while Recording Movie (thus LiveView mode too)

. FOCUS ASSISTANCE SYSTEM while recording Movie (VERY useful, specially when using narrow Depth-of-Fields with so critical focus range)

. MIC-IN jack, with Auto AND Manual level of the recorded audio!!

    VIEWFINDER:

. 0.80x Magnification (some SLR had these level of magnification, that was GREAT)

. Red square when Focus is achieved (great, keep them!!)

. Vertical metering bar (with 6 stops of metering: -3 to +3 EV) at the Left side of the frame (right eye has more visual field at its left side)

. BIGGER Display information inside the ViewFinder below the frame, USE the full horizontal space to make it bigger and more visible !!

. ON-demand grid lines (exchanging focusing screns is obsolete)

. Include arrows to indicate focus direction when Manual Focusing

    Etc…

The Movie mode is clearly a BIG selling feature, and increases Canon’s sales without a doubt (just see so many 5D Mark II out of stock in so many stores).

This will attract Pro Videographers and Amateurs as well due to its well known advantages and benefits over camcorders and videocameras.

Manufacturers realized this is already a must-have feature for DSLRs from the entry-level to the almost-Pro-Level.

Discarding this feature can be a big mistake and take in reduction of sales for a specific DSLR model.

Competition, marketing, demands, don’t stop, and sometimes customers don’t forgive
