5D Mark II Firmware Upgrade
Expect a new firmware upgrade for the 5D Mark II to address the “iris jitter”.

Timeframe for the release is unknown at the moment.

Do not expect any other functionality to be added (i.e. 60fps).

House & the 5D Mark II
Mitch over at Planet5D reported to me that Fox will only be using the 5D Mark II for special lighting circumstances and for a few other types of shots. Apparently post production costs were as high as standard film with the 5D Mark II’s files.

50 f/1.0L
The timing is off for me to buy this thing, but you can. I swear this lens was on the 5D Mark II in the final bathroom scene during the House finale. I could be wrong. :)

Editorial: A Little 1D Mark III Love (Don’t yell at me)
Some people are curious about what I’m shooting with.

Well, I sold my 1D Mark IVs and moved back to the 1D Mark III.

Why? I honestly prefer the files from the 1D III. My shooting conditions never triggered the AF issues. It also AF’s better in low light than the Mark IV.

I’m also not a pro sports photographer, I had no need to have that much money tied up in camera bodies.

I’m also good with having the 5D Mark II for video. Although my video skills leave a lot to be desired.

So if you want a camera that I feel is better than the 7D in IQ, build & AF’s as well, give a 1D Mark III a try. They’re getting very inexpensive. I’ve seen some below $1800 USD.

If you love your Mark IV, I’m happy as heck. It’s a great camera. If you want a steal, try a Mark III out.

  • I actually bought a used 1D III instead of a new 7D.

I won’t list you all the reasons that lead to that decision, but it was actually less expensive than the 7D (Germany).

And I guess I will sell it for not much less, than for what I paid for it;)

  • I’m surprised anyone even cared about the “jitter” issue. Did Bloom have a thought on the issue? Did anyone other that the “team” have problems here? For Canon to come out and fix the “jitter” is really a surprise.

My take on the issue? A waste of resources for an issue that’s really just the sensor discharging, a behind the scenes sort of metering if you will. Spin the focus and the camera registers a change in light, even in full manual. The tech behind the lens is complicated no doubt.

Time is better spent on issues that affect the real world, you know? Who cares about that “team” junk. If this were truly an issue, what gives. Maybe that’s why the “team” has been absent. Busy annoying Canon with superficial complaints about the video of their kitchen table during a focus pull.

Hope the “jitter” fix makes everyone (team) happy.

  • Oh, I forgot… I have no problem with the “team”, per se, just wanted the world to know how much they suck.

  • Don’t believe me… Go to their website and see for yourself how they had to line out a huge majority of their errant information – basically acknowledging that it’s not a problem for many lenses. Morons.

  • The only thing that seems to be flaming is the team. I never gave much thought to their psychobabble anyway.

  • I’m taking the computer away from everyone. Play nice and get back to the thread. Personally, I love that 50mm but would have to agree that it’s a little salty.

Does Bloom ever post here. Maybe we can make fun of him, too. I’m sure he’d get in on the fun.

  • Have to agree here.

The ‘team’ in ‘their’ (?) more real life guise (albeit still online / Cinema5D) is a rather belligerent and rude pain in the ass.

I am old enough to know that I shouldn’t get sucked into petty online squabbles, but I just needed to get that off my chest !

  • How some people cant “be surprised” by Canon fixing an issue?

No matter who report it first or second, it is an issue, that affects all 5D Mark II users who mount some lenses and want to use them for serious video purposes.

So it has to be fixed.

As we reported early, the “iris jitter” is not only affecting Macro lenses, but also some few others, as we published on the LIST OF LENSES AFFECTED (as detailed as possible with the help of many users)

When we found we wrote something inaccurate, we DO rectify it, and that’s a proof of our good faith and that we want the best for the 5D Mark II and all users. We do not hide.

The only inaccurate information we posted was rectified, updated and clarified, so even it is helpful for some users who may think they have an issue when they actually do not.

Just check our Blog and you will find FULL detailed Reports, Videos and Updates on the IRIS issue: http://5dmark2.wordpress.com/

Mr. Bloom already mentioned it on his blog long ago, right after our 1st report, linking to one of our video test and Reports, just to provide more detailed information.

Despite the irrational “hate” of some people, we do our best to help Canon users as much as possible.

We spend LOT of time sharing information with lot of users (from many sites) and testing possible issues. Even directly contacting Canon to report and suggest fixes and improvements.

Some people may never experience some issues, while other actually do often, that varies a lot, so even if someone do not care about an issue because he/she never uses the camera in such situation, we DO care. And support those other users.

That’s why we reported it as detailed as possible, to clear any doubt, and closely followed all Canon answers regarding that matter.

Some people might not appreciate what we do, while others actually do a lot, many times expressing it via private messages.

  • Typographical error:

“How some people cant “be surprised” by Canon fixing an issue?”

Should be: How some people CAN “be surprised” by Canon fixing an issue?

We CERTAINLY would be very surprised if Canon wouldn’t fix an issue!

Fortunately they listen to customers more than other companies, not always easy to make them hear, but they do, and we are all really glad and grateful for that.

  • Apologies to all (including the team). Seems as though throwing a party for photog friends is a really bad idea.

Apparently, everyone keeps jumping on the Mac (drink in hand – that means you – THOMAS). I’m cutting everyone off, bar closed.

For the 5D Mark II TEAM – I’ll send you some photos so you can exact some wicked revenge. THOMAS did it!

    Really.

  • You really did not read our reports carefully enough.

Because the “iris jitter” issue also occurs in a dark room or with the lens cap on. It is NOT related to light spikes, sensor discharges nor any metering problem.

Just check the Updated Report and TEST it by your own (that will give you more realistic and 1st hand experience):

    http://5dmark2.wordpress.com/2010/04/08/malfunction-in-firmware-2-0-4-update/

We know some users won’t care because they don’t use the camera+lenses for those purposes or in such situations, but lot of other users do care.

We should be more considerate with them. Some day an issue that also affects your camera and work might come up…

BTW, “they” don’t post often “here”. This board is only a very small fraction of the worldwide users’ expressions (mostly from stills-only shooters), but they do exist indeed (and a LOT).

  • LOL, don’t worry, no problem.

It’s not very nice when someone use your nickname ;-)

(not to mention if they are in a party and/or drinks in hand)

    Cheers.

PS: don’t close the bar, but turn of the Mac ;-)

  • Settle down, settle down.

Ghost, shut it down. Thomas, no one got owned but you. Dean, don’t get involved.

    – VL

P.S. – Bloom’s got the 7D out, come on back.

  • Uh ohh! Where are all those 7D wankers? I think I’m hearing preference for an OLDER, PRO camera more and more often.

    Hmf…

  • I sold my 1D MK II and bought a 7D. It was a fine camera, but I always reached for my 5D MK II. So, i returned the 7d while I could, and later found a nice used 1d MK III. It gets lots of use, and focus is not a issue to me. It has had all the fixes, of course.

  • Brilliant fool – you oughtn’t have rid yourself of your Mark IV’s.

  • I think the “Team” claims a lot of credit they don’t deserve. Things ike 24 fps and full manual mode were already developed and were to be released by Canon anyway.

  • Your comment on the 1d mk3 has got me thinking… I’ve been shooting with a 20D for years and have been borrowing my Uncle’s 7D and find it to be amazing! Of course anything at this point compared to the 20D is an upgrade.

KEH.com at the moment actually has a mk 3 on sale for $1900 that i’m looking to get but what is holding me back is whether or not i should just give the extra few hundred for the 5d mk2.

Can someone help me with this dilemma i have on my hands? I normally am shooting portrait work and would love something with decent ISO capabilities. I don’t care much for video but its a nice feature to have on a casual day out with friends. What can you say about how ISO is handled in the 1d mk 3 compared the 5d mk2?

  • Although it is perfectly true that you can get the 1d mk III for a great price, I feel the upgrade to the mk IV is definitely worth it. I notice an improvement in AF (fyi, I shoot PJ-style weddings), and I like the quality of the files.
Seems to have quite a bit of lattitude and although iso perfomance isn’t per se any better, files clean up very nicely. Increased mpix means I can do more cropping on images when needed. Just my 2 cents, but of course it all depends on your personal needs, budget, etc. Happy shooting y’all.

  • Question for those who have had both the 1D MkIII & MkIV.

In relation to Low light performance for shooting weddings in available light shots. Is there really much difference in the quality of 3200/6400 between the two cameras? I currently us a 5D2 but don’t take is past 1600 as I really start to notice the graininess at 3200 at night.

I was looking to replace my aging 30D with a 1DIV but obviously the 1D3 is considerably cheaper if it can do a comparable job? Any thoughts?

  • Funny that planet mitch would say that “House” is only going to use it for specific shots. They just ordered two 5D packages for next season. I think he may be incorrect on this. Met Gale Tattersall last night.

  • I shoot weddings. I just added the 1D3 to my arsenal. Up until this I had always shot with 5D’s. The ISO performance is at least a stop to 2 stops better than the original 5D. Don’t get me started on the AF either; it’s insane.
Perfect example of this was yesterday. I was at the San Francisco Exploratorium with my family. It’s pretty dark inside, so ISO 1600 at a minimum. There was another photographer there with his 5D2 and 24-70 L. I had my 1D3 and 24-105 (my favorite walk around lens). There is an exhibit where a tornado is formed via smoke. I watched him try to get focus on it for a good minute or so; he couldn’t. I walked right up with the 1D3 and immediately locked on the smoke ( with the outermost AF point) and snapped a couple frames.

Does the 5D have better ISO capabilities than the 1D3; yes. But what good is it to have the ability to take great low light pictures when you can’t focus on what you’re trying to shoot?

BTW: The I am comfortable shooting up to 3200 in the 1D3 all day long. Very natural looking noise.

  • That is evidence of nothing more than that they will be using them for some filming.

  • It’s been my experience that the settings for focusing will make or break the 5DII’s performance – the same holds true for the 1D3. I would assume that the photographer shooting the tornado had it set to something a little less desirable – possibly auto point select. I would have gone manual. Or, center focus select with the expansion enabled.

You already know that, I’m sure. I might chalk that one up to operator error. Your right, though, the 1D3 focusing and ISO work very well in the right hands.

  • Well that settles it for me! Thank you for your very informative inputs. Its been something I’ve been wanting to know but could not find anywhere. Most of the comparisons out there are like 5d mk2 compared to 1Ds mk3… It would be nice to have the 5d mk2 resolution, but after shooting just 18 RAW files with the 7D, i used up 400mb of my memory card!

Again, Thanks a lot for your input. I hope to see a 1d3 in my future

  • After buying the 1d mark IV, I’m now thinking of selling my 1d mark II and buy a 1d mark III.. :)

you can get clean ones for just $1800. So, its a steal price for a 1d mark IV – video and some pixels.. :)

  • That 50mm f/1.0L is obviously fake. The pictures are a mix of the 50mm f/1.2L and the 85mm f/1.2L II, with the front element ones being photoshopped to say 50mm. The front and back elements shown are identical to the 85mm f/1.2L II.

  • Just have to ask, what is the “team”? Is it som conaon thing? I’m a nikon user, so what have i missed out on?

    thanks// mt

  • I haven’t seen anything about this, but just from what I know about the 50mm 1.0 lens it would make me question it a little bit because it was reported to be so soft.

  • We just helped users (and still try to do), providing information and encouraged them in some campaigns (worldwide, not only here or there), to “push” (request) Canon to release fixes and improvements to public customers. Of course that happened along with lot of other users doing it by themselves.

We never claimed the updates are thank only to what we did or do, it would be false. We ALL users are part of the equation, with multiple variables and parameters.

Without the huge amount of users requesting AND the huge adoption and success of the 5D Mark II for video/movie purposes, the official release (of full manual control) wouldn’t have happened and (along with OTHER factors) the later DSLRs wouldn’t have so rich movie features either.

Those movie features (standard 24/25/30p, 720p50/60p, even Crop Video function and ISO limiters) are DIRECT consequence of users requests. You can still read them on the original petitions and campaigns’ information.

Those video features were NOT present in Canon’s roadmap & plans indeed. That’s something evident when they mentioned the “unexpected success” of the 5D Mark II in the video/filmmaking fields…

Yes, Canon already had Full manual control…. Since 2008, but they never officially released it until June 2009…. (it wasn’t the exact same firmware, but it had Full manual control)

Some production sets/special customers already had it, so the “official” release is not really due nor thanks to big productions or famous people requesting for it, as some people has said, because they ALREADY had it.

Canon provides unofficial firmware versions to specific special customers when they want.

Canon doesn’t need to release official firmware versions with improvements if they don’t consider it will be a good business move (unless an issue is detected or reported, as with the initial official version, and later 2.0.3 and 2.0.4). That’s obvious, it happens on every company developing high tech devices.

Remember Canon’s own words when releasing Full Manual Control for 5D Mark II: “By Popular demand…” and so on when announcing the (next year) update with 24/25p modes in October 2009.

Of course it shows them as a company that “listen to customers” (and they actually do, but it takes LOT of time to make them hear well enough…) That’s marketing, but it’s also true.

The demand was huge. We only collaborated on that purpose.

It’s all about business, customers and sales.

Not easy at all anyway. Huge amount of time to join customers in a positive action (not only by us) is required. Even more to keep on doing it for a long period of time.

When lot of people said “it’s impossible, Canon won’t release improvements”, we (and many more) kept encouraging to request to Canon (through many ways we learned and refined during the process) instead of just rest and complain. (if anyone wants more details, just check our blog since the beginning, but be aware that that’s only part of what we did and do)

This is all thanks to a COMBINATION of Forces and Factors. What happened and happens with the EOS 5D Mark II is a unique case.

  • the “team” referred to is 5D Mark II TEAM, they comment lot on anything related (obviously) to the 5D mark 2. :P

  • CR Guy:
    >I honestly prefer the files from the 1D III.

What is it about the 1DIII’s files that you prefer over the 1DIV’s?

  • Hey Evert,

With your MkIV. What ISO are you shooting at night at weddings. Have you shot much at 6400-25600? Are you getting anything decent in high ISO available light or do you keep it dialed down and use a flash?

  • Lulz, if CRGuy can get a used 1D3 for $1800 I can get a brand-new 7D for the equivalent of less than ~$1400. Why the two suddenly became comparable is beyond me. Having said that, I’d buy a non-pro abused 1D3 first before I even consider buying that overpriced 5D2 which is basically the same old 5D1 body with a new sensor. :P

    J==0wnzored again. Lawls.

  • Congrats sincerely 5D2 Team. A classy, respectful reply. Hats off to you. Thanks for pushing Canon to release the new firmware.

Some people just got massively 0wn3d by TEH TEAM. Lulz.

  • hi Derek,

I shoot it at 6400, mostly with 85 1.2 prime, and if needed I use 12.800. Don’t really go above, at least haven’t tried it, but I don’t really need to go higher.

  • Nice! I already have the 85 1.2 but being a series 1 I find it’s a bit slow and doesn’t cope with poorly lit situations very well or at least not on the 5D2. I’d love to see some of the 6400/12800 wedding night shots if you have them up somewhere?

  • In case anyone is interested, I have a 1D M3 in excellent condition listed on ebay.

    Rich

  • Yes, the 50L1.0 iss a nice lens if you are able to work with it. ;)
Its sitting on my 1DsMkIII right here on my desk. :)
