Launched Quietly
Nikon has launched a new 300 f/2.8. They also launched a new 2x TC alongside it.
These companies seem to be launching stuff when it's ready, instead of on a set schedule. That's good for us!

Er, I dont recall Nikon Rumour posting anything about the Canon EF 100mm f2.8L Macro IS lens when it came out nor did they post reviews about Canon cameras beating Nikon cameras and claiming it is “a good review” when clearly it was baised.
is it wrong for me to ask WHY is this being featured on a site called Canon Rumors??
Maybe Admin’s trying to make a point about products coming out not according a pre-determined date?
1) I try not to be biased. If it’s apparent Nikon does something better than Canon, I let people know. I will call Canon out. I’m not a “fanboy”… or try not to be.
2) I didn’t find the H2H review biased. I think the D5000 stands up well to the T1i.
3) Some folks shoot both systems and like to know when new lenses are launched.
4) Sometimes if one does something, the other one does something similar soon after.
Thanks!
See above. :)
No, but i think it’s cross-site publicity ;) Not that Canoneers are likely to shoot Nikon as well, but hey. Oh, and even though this thing will probably be sharp, i don’t think it’ll blow the Canon 300 2.8 out of the water. Nor is Canon likely to come up with a new 300 2.8 unless they have nothing better to do.
Don’t give CR Guy a hard time. When one large camera company announces something, the other is soon to follow. Plus, new lenses from one company means that something similar is coming, sometimes.
There is a $900 price gap between Canon and Nikon versions of this lens. The visible difference is a plate for Nikon and no plate for Canon.
Wait till canon release its 300 f/2.8L IS..woo!!
The 300 2.8 IS II has got to be PERFECT to warrant me upgrading.
The current lens is already mythical in quality.
“If it’s apparent Nikon does something better than Canon…”
APPARENT? most of the times,it’s OBVIOUS my dear :-)
I love reading this blog!
Good rumors, Nice update and (as this post shows) some distance to the all-familiar fanboy crap!
I shoot nikon, I like it, but that doesn’t stop me from liking/looking at what canon is doing.
Thanks for a great site :)
Indeed. It’s on my 1D about 95% of the time.
The more news, the merrier. Call it annoying if CR guy starts posting updates on sony point-and-shoots.
As gentlemen, it is only polite to let Nikonians enjoy their 15 minutes of fame while they have a more up-to-date lens than Canon currently provides. It’s probably manual focus only on half their cameras anyway :P
It won’t be long before Canon releases all the killer updates for the long lenses.
It’s also nice to hear what’s going on in the industry in general.
Dude, It’s good to see what other companies are doing. Nikonrumors also has a photorumors site where they post canon stuff. So you can’t really compare.
I want a new 35mm non L lens. Not rich (or needy) enough for an L.
I believe what you mean is “oh good, I’m glad they’re posting some Nikon stuff so that Canon may see this and have some competition”.
Don’t you fret your little gremlin face over these matters.
Plate???
Seems like Canon is manufacturing the Nikon lenses. Their big primes are almost siblings compared to what Pentax or Sony has to offer. Well if you pop up your canon printer you can see Epson or even HP components on it. IP wise, almost all lens patents are also from Canon.
um…. no, Canon does NOT manufacture Nikon lenses… and Nikon files patents all the time, and is one of the only companies to produce their own glass… and if Canon made Nikon’s lenses then Canon would already have a 14-24..
Nikon will stay superior in terms of, well in most aspects of photography (not movie-mode perhaps, which makes me even proud of having a D700 without it), not that Canon “can’t” but Nikon is just a bit more or better in most aspect’s, specially in glass. :)
I hear Panasonic is coming out with a new microwave….
Yeah, my vote is for sticking to Canon stuff on the Canon site.
Simon,
cool down mate,in order to be unbiased reporter one should appreciate stuff the competition makes better .and this is one reason why many nikon users feel free to visit canonrumours frequently(apart from the reason many of them use canon stuff too). sharing info should be the purpose of sites like these and not fanboy wars. guys like you with silly comments makes it fun to read once a while though ,i must add, plz dont make it your habit to get all worked up hearing the word ” Nikon ” :-).
chill out and happy snapping

or for that matter atleast one (zoom or prime) lens under 85mm which can match it . he he he he he
unfortunately it´s just your fantasy dude . but for your info the first canon cam (Hansa) came out with nikkor lens in front of it :-)). the rivalry started back in 30´s when nikon started producing their own cam.
and there is a price difference on almost all the high end glass nikon make, what makes nikons costly is the QC ,the number of times every single lens is checked before it passes is one factor which adds to the cost, remember the price of lenses from leica and zeiss ?, they are that costly because of the number of QC checks and tight tolerence levels practiced by those companies. every check costs time and products cost more ,but you dont get a leamon (in case of lenses) for the price you pay.
in relation to those “hand made quality” companies, a mass production company ” X ” may do only half that number of checks which saves money and company ” Y ” even half of that what ” X ” does, so for the end user it means cheaper lenses but more “leamons”in the market as far as the number of complaints about the ” Y´s ” products shows (check DPR on AF problems and soft pics threads, most of it comes from ” Y ” brand owners).
mass production has it pros as well as cons, sometimes you pay more `not necesserily for a better product´ but for less chance of getting a lemon.
Buddy, my post wasn’t intended to be flamebait. I just found it odd that this site, being dedicated to Canon-specific things, would be talking about Nikon gear.
I am not trying to engage in fanboy wars. I *am* one of the Nikon users who visits Canon Rumors.
well,i´ll accept it.and may be you are right.
but i find it odd and ironic that you say you find it odd that nikon stuff gets published here on our canon only site (from your point of view), and still you – a `Nikon owner´ asks such a silly question.
wont it be silly if i ask you ,why a `nikon owner´is posting something here at all? .sure it´ll sound silly and i think it´ll be a similar question to yours.that´s all.
well i´d have fully accepted your reasoning if you wrote ” I *am* one of the Nikon/Canon (dual system ) users who visits Canon Rumors.”
it simply dosent fit together ,that´s all.;-)
