There was no real info on a replacement of the XS. It was suggested Canon might just kill the XS and replace it with the XSi when the the TSi hits market.
cr

Hmm I do not think the frame frame is possible. The current XSI is 3.5fps and a reduction seem unlikely (different case for 40D and 50D as the 40D did not reach 6.5fps as specified) MP seem logical and the digic 4, live view, video are most likely accurate.
I’m not quite convinced with that. Taking the high MP count from the brand new mid-range 50D to the low-range 500D in under half a year seems a bit too short for me.
Unless Canon tries to start a rather aggressive MP race against Nikon trying to keep (or re-gain) market shares. The 5D2’s 21MP could be a hint to that too…
Sebastian, the Rebels have historically been higher MP’s than x0D. The issue they have with IQ in the 50D with MP’s would not be as much BrewHaHa in a Rebel.
However, let us all prey that the MP Arms race is ending, at least for APS-C cameras. It’s not the noise anymore, The density is our resolving the lens… which unlike noise doesn’t have a technology fix.
The 40D was 6.3 FPS (some standard change as to measurements) I don’t think a 3-3.5 fps would be that outlandish for a rebel.
Here’s betting that the movie mode will be 720p and not 1080.
@KJ:
“However, let us all prey that the MP Arms race is ending, at least for APS-C cameras.”
I’ll prey that being true for fullframes…
“It’s not the noise anymore, The density is our resolving the lens…”
Aw come on… I regard ISO 6400 and 12800 as unusable on the 50D. (And diffraction blur on top of that.)
Most people are going crazy over the new 5D2’s movie mode. That’s why it’s hot.
If canon releases a rebel with HD movie for less than a grand and 15mp. Who’s gonna wany to buy the crappy 50D or the 5D2 for 3 times more? And who cares about only 3fps when u have 30fps movies at about 4.5MP
1. ppdix, the 50D is not “crappy”. If it does not meet your needs, then say so, not some generic opinion that doesn’t appear to have any informed opinion behind it (you’ve provided no evidence anyway).
2. the real issue is the stealing of the 50D’s value if the provide the same features in a much cheaper camera. Same as the price drops on the 40D – suggests that they are gouging the customer with a higher price on the 50D than they need to maintain margins for R&D.
Flame away since you probably won’t read what I’m saying that’s outside your “opinion”
PS: I meant to say “pray” instead of “prey” of course. :-)
“And who cares about only 3fps when u have 30fps movies at about 4.5MP”
where did you take this specs. from? o_O
as far as my calculator telling me:
1920pix x 1080pix = 2073600pix = 2.07MP only
I want your super duper hight definition camera
AleX I meant about 2.5… Sorry Typo. It’s still pretty good for 4×6’s
Hagen. I had proved more than enough evidence. I only needed one day with the camera to realize it wasn’t what Canon built it up to be. No it doesn’t meet my needs or the needs of most of the pro-sumers with 40D’s that are happy about their camera not being obsolete.
My review came the day after the camera came out. Everybody thought I was bashing the 50D but I as a REAL professional with many years of experience I realized the camera was just hype. Fortunately for me, everybody from DPReview and on had the same bad test results on the camera.
The camera is crappy compared to Canon’s misleading information. It might very well be a cheap camera and for the price it is a good buy, but it sucks that a 3 year old 5D with an “old” sensor and Digic3 processor is better… This camera was Canon’s answer to the cheaper D series and they released it anyway with Error99 problems and a bad quality.
Don’t tell me it’s just MY OPINION. It seems to be everybody else’s as well.
Here are some tests so you see for yourself what a 2 year old 1DMK3 can do with a 50D

i wonder who will want to buy a camcoder if 600$ DSLR (TSi or whatewer) will give you more creativity options + compartibility to ALL lenses?
P.S. sorry 4 my english
P.P.S. to CR – you should add spelling check for spelling-bees like me :)
I wonder if Canon would top the MP with the 50D. I know it would be historic if Canon didn’t add some MP but I don’t think making it fifteen would be a smart move. People would by this 500D or TRi or XRi is pretty popular instead of the 50D. And I’m not sure they would go down on the fps. But all else seems pretty predictable. Better live view, movie mode, face detection. But I do have a question? Was there a 40D-50D trade in program? I think they should do the same for this and the 450D, since they changed their cycles to one year instead of 18 months.
Canon has a history of releasing less expensive, similarly spec’d Rebels following the XXD models…..XSI to 40D…TSI to 50D and I think the XTI to 30D……I’m not sure what they are thinking, I would think in todays economy this would kill sales of the XXD line. Also I would’nt look to an end to the MP race, is there were I think you would see it in the next rebel…..Too bad!
Off subject here, but does anyone believe that the 60D could be less than 15MP ?
BTW:
500D it’s close up lense from canon :)

I’m not sure, but I’m very dissatisfied with Canon’s move with the 50D. That many megapixels would be cool, but I want high ISO performance a lot more. I’d also like a new AF system, though the current one is tried and tested so at least we know it’s reliable.
I’m not sure if I see the rebel being able to do 3200 ISO however… In my opinion, the only major limitations on the rebel in the past have been high ISO ability and frames per second. I mean, I’ve seen spectacular portraits from both rebel’s and xxD’s… and you would be pressed to tell the difference. I don’t think canon will do 3200 ISO in a rebel body because it would compete against their own xxD line, especially since many photographers consider 6400 and 12800 unusable in the 50D.
I don’t see canon making the 60D less than 15MP, but I wouldn’t mind if it was. I think about 12MP is more than I need, but its good to have a little extra just in case. I’m perfectly happy with 8MP truthfully, but I know they won’t go backwards that far.
I would love to see some mid-range camera even more action oriented, say… 8 fps, more-than-9-point AF with tracking, and maybe a more powerful internal motor just for non-USM lens emergency situations, and usable at 6400. That’s definitely not happening though…
That was my comment above (forgot to put my name in) sorry.
wouldn’t be surprised if canon limited the frame rate to 3fps as to keep the 5d2 from being their slowest dslr.
seing as the SX1 will be able to film 1080p I wouldn’t be surprised if the 500 also will be able to do it (having the option of 720p would be great though).
i wish canon use that extra video/live view sensor wisely, having a dual sensor camera is better than having video mode or live view.
i’m dreaming of the successor to the 450D that can do video. the 5D m2 shows it’s possible, the 500D will make it affordable.
1080p with all my canon glass to play with? heaven.
No AF in Movie mode is a bit of a drawback and would result in alot of blurry home vidoes. It could really only be used on a tripod to shoot an object that doesn’t move around alot. I think that puts a huge limitation on its usefullness.
Actually 5d can’t track a subject either now that I’ve read the specs. It has to be done manually..hmmm
I am sorry but the 50d is crap crap crap and a rip off. Reviews say high iso modes are unusable with way too much noise. Unlike 5dmark2 15mp on a crop sensor = poor iq. For greater than 15mp and low noise must go full frame! Hope 500d improves on the 12mp sensor iq not increase to 15mp.
Don’t you know how to control aperture on your camera? Narrow apertures gives more DOF dummy! Plus 5dm2 has big iso range to play with. AF would be nice though.
No AF in Movie mode is a bit of a drawback…
No mention of geotagging? this is a killer feature as far as I’m concerned.
A 920 LCD would by itself be a tempting reason to upgrade to a 500 from the 450. Bring it. Also, bring a 2.8 IS lens for the same range of 70-200 in the FF series. The crop cams have nothing there to choose from !!
What about GPS? Do you think it would be integrated?
canon is makeing a new camera every 6 months fact !
every 6 months now the pixel war is on get ur money out !
