Current Lens Talk
The following are lenses that are being bandied about for release this fall.

100 f/2.8 IS Macro
200 f/3.5L IS Macro
70-200 f/2.8L IS II

50-200 f/2.8L IS
24-105 f/2.8L IS
15mm f/2.8 USM Fisheye

The only credible information I have on lenses is the two macros. We’ve always had a hard time getting lens info here at Canon Rumors, this round of rumors isn’t any different.

Bodies
The 60D/7D will be arriving to the real world next Tuesday according to most sources. A couple site August 25 as a possibility.

We’ll also be seeing a new Rebel. Canon will trump the D3000 and keep video in their entry level camera.

Flashes
There is nothing on the immediate horizon about flashes.

Powershot
An interesting email claiming Canon would be releasing another waterproof camera. It would have a 5x zoom and HD Video. It’s a [CR1] rumor.

Firmware
The 5D Mark II could be seeing a firmware update “any day now”. No word on what will be added/fixed.

Canon Rumors
The site is onto the dedicated server. We had very minimal downtown last night. All seems to be working fine.

Sorting through emails, more to come this afternoon.

  • By the looks of it, only the 2 macro lenses look credible anyway!

    A 50-200 f/2.8 IS ?? Not likely at all…

A 24-105 f/2.8 IS ?? That’s a great dream lens to own, a super do everything lens to go for! But the last time something similar from Tamron ( 28-105 f/2.8 ) came along, it was pretty dismal…. I wouldn’t hold my breath for it. I would be extremely happy if it was anything like a 24-85 f/2.8 IS with par performance to that of the current 24-70 L.

  • 50-200 f/2.8L IS

    24-105 f/2.8L IS

I’m not too sure about these, they’d have to be fairly big.

    I’m more interested in the 24-70, 70-200, 100-400 being upgraded, although a 24-105, 100-400 might be nice.

The 60D/7D will be arriving to the real world next Tuesday

    let’s hope…

    5D Mark II firmware update.

my guess is the audio input agc will gain manual control.

    might gain 24p.

    we’ll see.

  • Hej, I think it would be ridiculous to release another waterproof camera 1. 6 months after the D10, 2. just before winter (for most of customers). Hope there is something more exciting about powershots coming, but I’m sure I will be disappointed.

  • If I were Canon, I would want to make freakin sure that the 1D4 is trouble free, and makes ALL the pro’s go “OH SH!T I Gotta get 2 of those”
And that means lots of testing…..lots.

  • ABOUT 5D Mark II FIRMWARE:

There are sources confirming that a different Firmware version does exist.

    – We know there are MANY features that can be improved (Bracketing, to tell the 1st and simplest, HDMI output, etc…)

    – We know there are some functions that SHOULD be fixed (Dropped frames in some situations, AGC, AutoISO, HDMI, etc…)

    – We know there are LOT of features that COULD be implemented (24/25p, Zebra stripes, Manual Gain for audio, Focusing aids, Digital Zoom, Cropped format video recording -no aliasing issues-, HDMI output, etc. -the list could go long-. Many features that Magic Lantern Project’s people is already working on without having a piece of source code nor the resources that Canon has)

(HDMI is in every line because it can be improved (get out white square, etc), it should be fixed (resolution, performance, etc.), and it could be better implemented to allow raw recording, ALL of them!)

    – And finally we do know there are more firmware versions around.

    – NOW, WE ASK CANON: What are you going to give to customers, and what are you NOT going to give?

Canon SHOULD read this site and some forums carefully, they would find LOT of useful ideas, bugs reports, new features implementation, and the HUGE interest that current and future users have on this camera and the possibilities that are still not exploited.

Canon is “listening to customers”, rigth?

It’s smart to take customers’ requests seriously. That will increase sales and loyalty.

Let’s hope Canon do things right, and well enough…

  • If I were Canon I would have been working on that for awhile and launch a 1 series now to get the major wire sources time to buy them for the winter Olympics. New 70-200 2.8 HIS, 300 2.8 HIS, and 400 2.8 HIS should release concurrently. Act soon or you’ll miss your chance Canon.

  • ::fingers crossed:: for 24p! I just finished shooting a feature length film with my 5dm2 ( machinacinema.com ); didn’t want to shoot in 30p but oh well…

  • Sony is coming out with a FF 14MP A750 body for $1200.

Canon is in deep doo doo if they don’t really step up their game on the 60D and also a FF 7D between the 60D and 5D2.

  • I doubt an EF 50-200 2.8, you’re right it would be huge, but a EF-S 50-200 2.8 IS could be doable to compete with other APS-C & 4/3 dedicated lenses like Pentax’s 50-135 F2.8 and the Olympus Zuiko Digital ED 90-250mm F2.8 and Zuiko Digital ED 50-200mm F2.8-3.5 SWD.

  • Once again we have rumors and no CR 1-5 listed for them.

If you are going to have a credibility assessment, put the assessment on EVERYTHING. The latest set of rumors, so close to the release date of 19 Aug, leaves me wondering how credible you think these rumors are. You state: The only credible information I have on lenses is….” How credible? CR4? How credible is the story on the other lenses? CR2? Please share your thoughts on all the rumors please.

Also when you report factual information, why not devise a way to indicate that? CR – 6 (Fact) for example.

Keep up the good work, we always want to know what’s going down.

  • 24-105 f/2.8L IS and 50-200 f/2.8L IS seems nice if it turns out to be true. I’m doubtful however.

I’m still not convinced we’ll see a 7D. At least not for another year or so.

If 1D upgrade release is delayed it’s probably a good thing meaning Canon’s making sure it’s fully functional. And if the 60D is released in a week, I hope it’s a D300s killer and not just a 50D with a film function. Canon can’t afford that.

It looks like an interesting fall…

  • personaly, i like the idea of a 24-105 lens,
i want to keep my wide end where it is. otherwise
canon would need something longer in the wide lenses like a 16-50 (would like this wider like a 12mm-?) if the 50-200 were to come out.

  • I need a 2nd body again so a new 1Ds4 would be nice :P
Oh and when will we see new speedlights??? Nikons SB-900 is better then the 580EXII :@

  • 50-200 is a truly bizarre focal length and I see no sense in it especially considering that Canon already makes a 70-200 lens with the same aperture. What exactly would be the point of making a very slightly wider version of this lens really escapes me.

I would not hold my breath for something like 24-105 2.8 IS, seems like an expansive overkill anyway, it would be cheaper to manufacture a shorter version of it, like 24-70 for example that would complement the already existing line of 70-200 2.8.

Any new IS macros would be very welcomed additions to the existing line-up.

The fisheye, oh well, honestly so few people care about it, it’s a very niche lens.

For I would love to see, and I’ve been saying that for a while, are cheap (as in nifty-fifty cheap) short primes, say something like 22/24mm and 31/32mm (both f/1.8, both EF mount). Those things would sell like hotcakes for crying out loud. Just think about it, what is the first question a newbie with a kit zoom asks – “what lens should I buy next”. What is the usual question – “get a nifty-fifty and enjoy its primey goodness” and as fine a lens as it is it’s just a little restricted on a crop body. Slightly wider angle cheap primes would be a great addition to the current line up of lenses.

  • That would be the A850.

    New Sony’s:

    Sony A950 with backlit 24.6Mp Exmor sensor @ $3k

    Sony A850 with 24.6 Mp @ $2k

    Sony A750 with 14MP backlit sensor @ $1200.00

  • Keep in mind the current A900 FF is only $2300. Sony will be announcing the new cameras soon, they’ve already been leaked on the Sony web site.

  • you’re right about the 50-200/70-200 issue. the 50-200 2.8 only makes sense if it’s EF-S to compete with other dedicated crop sensor lenses from competition…

  • I’ve already sold my 40d but kept the 17-55 lens, so I’m ready to place a order on day one… If it sounds good.

Since I already have the 5D II, another FF is of no interest to me. A 1.3 or 1.6 crop with excellent high iso, and excellent AF is what I’m looking for.

I have the excellent AF in my 1D MK II, but it does not do ISO over 400 well at all.

  • They should just go all out and turn it into a “great white” lens with internal zooming. For both marketing and practical uses.

  • If the supposed 50-200 should happen to be using EF-S mount it makes it impossible for it to be a “L-lens” unless Canon changes it’s marketing strategy.

  • Agreed. Too much focus on the XXD market… Canon forgets the pros, the pros will forget Canon.

  • The “L” designation just means it has Flourite, typically used on fast pro glass due to costs – if Canon is deciding to compete with prosumer APS-C dedicated lenses like other companies produce, they could easily make an EF-S L lens.

  • Hey, I don’t care about the 1D series. Gimme a good xxD camera, man. I am sure there is also a lot more interest in the xxD cameras than the 1D series.

  • No, “L” does not stand for flourite (whatever that is), please show me a link that would suggest that it does, “L” stands for “Luxury” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_L_lens, http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Canon-Lenses/Canon-L-Lens-Series.aspx).

So far Canon has only manufactured EF lens with that designation (with one exception – Canon PowerShot Pro1 had an “L” lens) despite the fact that at least one EF-S lens has quality good enough to be considered a L-lens.

  • Hopefully, they’ve learnt something from their 50D fiasco (a total flop in terms of sales when compared to the 20D/30D/40D).

  • You should read futher on your links where it says they use Flourite, but here’s a quote right off Canon’s site:

“Canon’s Professional L-Series lenses utilize Fluorite, a material which provides outstanding resolution, contrast, and color reproduction- especially in lightweight, high-magnification lenses.”

Flourite is the single distinguishing feature of L lenses, and sorry, but it’s not Luxury. The EF 400 F4.0 DO is not an L lens, why do you suppose that is? BECAUSE IT DOES NOT USE FLOURITE AND USES DIFFRACTIVE OPTICS INSTEAD!!! :)

As for the fact Canon has not *YET* made an L series EF-S, does not mean they can’t, shouldn’t or wont make one to compete with other very high end dedicated crop sensor lenses from the likes of Olympus, Pentax and others. The reality is other companies are getting good, Canon has to pay attention and compete or just lose more market share.

  • The xxxD and xxD lines are the big markets. The pro market is important too of course, especially from a consumer perception standpoint, but let’s be real, the bank is in the entry level market – that’s why they have four Rebels, HALF THEIR LINEUP is entry level.

  • Let’s stay on the subject.

You said “The “L” designation just means it has Flourite” as in fact it does not mean that at all, “L” is just a marketing designation meaning “luxury”. I am not disputing facts that L-lenses contain specific optical elements, have high build quality etc just pointing out that the letter “L” has nothing do to as such with “fluorite”, it’s just a marketing designation of a particular, high quality line of merchandise.

  • It would “impossible” as in illogical and against the current marketing strategy. It would make no sense to manufacture $1500 good quality glass that could be used only on 1.6x crop bodies.

  • My definition comes from Canon. Yours comes from wikipedia and the-digital-picture site. The only thing that makes an L lens an L lens is the fact they use Flourite in it.

On subject: the EF 400mm 4.0 DO is a big white weather sealed highest build quality and by every standard imaginable a $5,500.00 LUXURY lens…but it’s NOT an L lens. EXPLAIN THAT? You can’t because you are incorrect that L designates a luxury lens – it designates a lens with optical Flourite inside.

So an L lens can be a $900 135mm 2.0 or a $5300.00 200mm 2.0 only if it has Flourite and for no other reason. Take just the Flourite out of any L lens and guess what? It’s not an L lens anymore. It’ll be a DO lens or ED lens or some other designation.

Fact is, your “luxury designation” explanation can not explain how Canon can make a $5500 white weather sealed 400mm 4.0 DO luxury that is not an L lens. Mine does. And it’s not really my explanation anyway, it what Canon says.

  • Pentax makes several very high quality weather sealed glass dedicated to APS-C cameras. The olympus 90-250mm F2.8 is a $6000 lens made for a 4/3 crop sensor camera.

What is illogical to me is the fact there are plenty of low cost crappy build EF lenses made by Canon, yet by your logic they should not make EF L series lenses because they market some cheap crappy EF ones too.

Cheap crappy Canon lenses are not limited to EF-S, so why should L lenses be limited to EF only? I see nothing against Canon’s marketing strategy other that an EF-S L lens would be a first, just as the 1Ds was the first full frame sensor, and the 5D2 was the first with HD video…

  • To trump the D3000/D5000/D90:

    – mirrorless

    – articulating OLED screen

    – keep the OVF and flash

    – retain movie mode for 12 MP sensor

    – improved 12 MP sensor

    – same low cost

    And you have a winner!

  • I’m all for better EF-S glass. If a company is going to dedicate lenses to a sensor, do it all the way. I can see not making $6000 EF-S lenses, but $900 to $1500 seems a good high end for that market, have some primes, smaller lighter 2.8 zooms, target backpackers, hikers, travelers with some nice stuff before they’re all carying EP1’s, K7’s or GH1’s.

  • Pretty much yes. :) But OLED will help prolong battery life and 12 MP APS-C sensors that perform like the one in D90/D5000 will be most excellent.

But I doubt Canon has the chops to pull this off. :)

  • I am with you David, having it in white would be perfect. Of course, I also want internal zooming also just because the 70-200 lenses have me spoiled.

  • I’m not saying they are not calling them luxury lenses, but the fact is it is the Flourite that makes them L lenses. If you don’t believe me, or Canon for that matter as they clearly state L lenses use Florite and non-L lenses dont, please explain how the $5500 white weather sealed 400mm 4.0 DO is NOT a luxury lens?

Other than the lack of Flourite, name one thing that does not make it a luxury lens?

Do you think people spending $5500 on a lens are believing it’s not a luxury lens?

Sure Canon marketing might say L is for luxury, but then what about the 400 4.0 DO that not an L lens for $5500? Marketing people don’t always think things through. As Canon states about the L lenses, they are all made with Flourite elements, and no other lens except L lenses use Flourite.

  • and what about a new version of the old 17-85is? larger aperture and less distortion are necessary!!!!!!

  • It’s called L or Luxury just simply because they use flourite in the glass. L or luxury is the same thing. Why are they called L? Due to flourite!

  • Excellent hoefully they bring out an excellent EF-S lens at the same time a new and much improved 17-85 IS USM or a new 17/18-105 IS USM, with ring usm. Brilliant!
