This week SIGMA announced the 35mm F1.4 DG II | Art for L-mount and E-mount, along with the 15mm F1.4 DC Contemporary for the RF mount. The latter being a replacement for the 16mm F1.4 DC Contemporary. It shaved a lot of size and weight over its predecessor and has been well received in these parts.

SIGMA Development Announcement

SIGMA has announced development of the 85mm F1.2 DG | Art, which again will be for L-mount and E-mount. The new lens will be the longest F1.2 lens that SIGMA has released.

The 85mm F1.2 DG | Art Lens promises to have exceptional resolution, even at its maximum aperture of F1.2. SIGMA also mentions that this will be the last lens in their F1.2 prime lens lineup. The lineup consists of the Sigma 35mm f/1.2 DG DN Art and Sigma 50mm f/1.2 DG DN Art. So there will not be a 24mm version added to the lineup.

Features:

  • APS-C | f/1.4 to f/16
  • 24mm (Full-Frame Equivalent)
  • Splash-Resistant Design & Front Coating
  • Stepping Motor AF System
  • Rounded 9-Blade Diaphragm
  • Assignable Control Ring

An ultra-wide with an especially portable design, the Sigma 15mm f/1.4 DC Contemporary is a strikingly compact and fast prime lens with a huge field of view. Ideal for landscapes, interiors, architecture, and astrophotography applications, this is a maximalist lens with a minimalist form factor.

The new 85mm f/1.2 DG DN Art will feature the dual HLA autofocus, which is the only other feature mentioned by SIGMA.

The new lens is scheduled to go on sale in September of this year, and there will be an official announcement in late August.

Canon RF 85mm F1.2L USM

Canon currently has a pair of Canon RF 85mm F1.2L USM lenses. One of them has the DS (De-focus Smoothing) which improves the rendering of bokeh.

While both are brilliant lenses, replacement are likely in the offing, both lenses would welcome lighter and and size. Though I wouldn't expect of them to be replaced this year. Canon has the RF 50 F1.4L VCM and RF 85 F1.4L VCM lenses, which are small, light and have top level image quality. If size and weight matter to you, save some money and grab the VCM versions, they're fantastic.
