Stock levels for the RF 50mm f/1.8 STM seem to be dwindling in some places

There are reports from a couple of countries on the planet that the RF 50mm f/1.8 STM is either hard to get or retailers are unable to order it.

First, asobinet reports that there is no stock from big retailer Camera Kitamura. There is currently a “3 month” wait to get your hands on one from the company.

We have also been told by a South American retailer that they can no longer order the lens either, but they have been given no reason as to why.

It seems the rest of the planet has good stock of the thrifty fifty, but we don't recall a time when Canon's inexpensive 50mm has ever been difficult to get.

The RF 50mm f/1.8 STM is made in Malaysia, and it's possible that the production facilities there are being updated to handle producing more RF mount products, as the factory produced parts and products for EF and EF-M.

We don't see any reason that this lens needs an update. It's one of those volume products that fits a price-point and with it, a certain expectation of performance.

  1. I actually decided to get a new EF 50mm f/1.8 STM before they discontinue them (I already have the 50mm II). I'm sure the RF version would be restocked soon in those countries, I can't imagine them making a new version so soon.

I think an RF 50mm f/1.4 is a different market from the f/1.8 so I think it would be suitable to have both available. Or maybe Canon will allow a third party to make an RF 50mm f/1.4.
  2. I have one coming today, was going to hold out for the L series variant, but I got a decent discount and also might be better for tourist type carrying on my R5. I just hope it's as good as my 35mm F1.8
