I’m still hearing Tuesday for the announcement. No CR3 sources have piped up yet.

UPDATE
A few points I’d like to make about this spec list and how it compares to the T1i.

– If this spec list is true, then I’d expect a firmware update for the T1i. Adding 24fps or 30fps 1080p video.
– I’d also expect the T1i to have a bigger and brighter viewfinder.
– There will be probably be software differences withing the cameras like the XS and XSi.
– The 3fps would probably be for jpg, retaining the 1.5fps in RAW of the XS.
– Perhaps no face detection LiveView focusing.

  • Seems a bit too close to the 500D to me. That spec clearly won’t be much cheaper and that would leave a big hole at the bottom of Canons range again. When will they ever learn? They need a sub-£300 to bring in new users, not a £450 500D-lite.

  • Clearview? That the vga screen like the 500d, 50d and 5dmkii? If so, great buy! Otherwise blah!

  • @ CR-guy

Do you think they push the 20fps from the 1080p up to 24 or it will be just an option for the 720p mode?

A new firmware for the 500D/T1i would be logical. (full manual control)

  • Uh, WHY no articulating screen yet? Uh, WHY do they need 15mp? Uh, why are they bringing out a camera that’s so close to the XSi, I don’t need to upgrade? Give me a 12mp camera with 480p and a 2.7″ articulating screen and I’m tickled pink!

  • With Canon now churning out a new model every year, differences will not be likely worth upgrading.

They are competing more with Nikon for 1st time buyers than for upgraders. They want you to upgrade to the 60D or 5D MK II models.

  • If they’re really going to offer it with 24p, that says to me that they simply HAVE to offer a firmware update for the 5D mkII to provide it.

  • *JEALOUS*

Yes if 24fps comes to this, I would like to see an update to the 500D with 24fps for the 720p & 1080p (if possible – I remember there were limitations for this)

  • Whoopee … a new Rebel. Just what I wanted Canon … really, I love your present. I’m not gonna pawn it or anything…

  • Specs look OK for an entry-level camera except for one thing – the articulated screen and it’s really bad thing for Canon. When a newbie, wannabe will compare cameras to buy he will really not look at the specs he doesn’t understand anyway but will compare features he can see and touch. If other entry-level cameras will have the articulated screen and the Canon one will not, it’s going to count heavily against Canon.

  • FWIW I give my vote to the blah-party, too. This is a really disappointing set of specs, especially when you consider the competition.

I am one of those weirdos who use 1000D professionally. It functions as my disposable point-and-shoot when I don’t want to carry/risk my other kit. For this kind of use it has been good enough, so I had been waiting eagerly for the new model.

What do I see? Frankly, nothing. Cheapo 15 mp will certainly have some quirks that might even make the end result worse. Good screen is nice, but the 1000D screen is ok. Video will also have strategically created disabilities in the best Canon tradition.

Flip screen would have made this camera something special. I really miss my oldie G-Canons that gave me many wonderful perspectives and candid opportunities.

As I said, my 1000D has been okay, but it does have its’ problems, like unreliable focusing, strange artifacts that blow up in postprocessing, sllooowwnesss and such. I would like to upgrade, but if these specs are real, I might start to shop around. Canon is a good imaging company, but boy, do they milk their customers in every possible way.

So let’s see: Olympus Pen, Panasonic GH-1, even Pentax K7? If I really start to think about it, how about a wholesale emigration to Nikon? Canon has made me think like this before, but the competition has always been pathetic. They are not overpowering today, either, but they are getting better. Canon can’t afford to tread water like this for long.

  • More cheap bodies. Hope canon comes out with something innovative on on 60D to compete with Nikon. This is frustrating.

Engineers are spending more time figuring out how to cripple existing products to preserve margins. Awful.

  • There’s a non-sequitur here; why would the 500D/T1i suddenly get a 24/30FPS 1080p option just because the putative 2000D would get 24FPS @ 720p? If Canon could wring out 24FPS @ 1080p on the 500D they would have done it before release. 20FPS 1080p video is a useless, non-standard Full HD format. They might as well have advertised the cam as having 20FPS still image framerate @ 2MP. LOLOL.

If there is a 5D2-style firmware “upgrade” to the 500D/T1i, I’m hoping they’d put in, at the very least, an sRAW1 (8MP) and/or an sRAW1+JPEG-M Fine (8MP) option. 15MP is just too much useless data sometimes, especially now that DXOMark has proven that 14-bits is useles on Canon’s APS-C sensors since the extra 2-bits are just describing useless data, i.e., noise. Therefore there should be a 12-bit option on the 500D/50D to speed up FPS, reduce filesize and thus effectively increase the buffer space and card capacity.

Another thing Canon should add to the 500D is AF Micro-adjust, even for just 5 or 10 lenses (compared to 20 on the higher-end cams). It’s prolly in the firmware already, just disabled. Also, better in-cam JPEG processing so it can finally do better on DPR-style silly pixel-peeper testing. =P

  • Oh, yeah, while we’re daydreaming, might as well plead with Canon to offer the same manual video controls on the 500D/T1i like what the 5D2 now has. When would Canon learn that their $800 cam is not cannibalizing sales of their $2700 cam? Hello, Chuck Westfall, are the japs listening to you at all???

  • Sorry Chris, obviously don’t know engineers. Engineers ALWAYS want to build a better product. Marketing always tries to lure the customers with gee-wizz features and claims.

In most hi-tech companies that are end customer focused, marketing drives the spec sheet and the engineers are left to figure out how to do it in the always too short time to get it done.

  • Well hopefully they realized the faux 1080p 20 fps was not welcome – at least they’re being honest now.

  • I don’t think the chips in the T1i or T1 are able to deliver true 1080p, which is why it was stuck with 20 fps – it was a marketing gimmick to top Nikon. To get 30p and 24p they have to limit it to 720p.

  • OK, what does a Rebel shooter need with manual control of video? It’s a step up camera from the P&S market, 80% + first time DSLR owners, so do you really think they’re all gonna be using video in manual?

  • I don’t get your argument. What you’re saying is, it’s bad if Canon gains a unique selling proposition? I for one don’t need the articulating screen.

  • Well, who knows when the D300s will come out. Anyway the 60D is expected for Xmas season.

Canon might be first with the much more important entry-level model instead.

  • I think they are great as long as they dont drop below the camera like Nikon so you can’t use it on a tripod. Especially if you do video, or self portraits, like on a camcorder.

  • The EU has been trying to tax cameras with a video frame rate of 23 fps and 1080 resolution at 12.5% for a couple of years now. This could factor in to the lower frame rate(avoid a huge tax).

  • What an homophobic statement and totally worthless statement. I do not see what 20fps has to do with homosexuality.

  • Youtube plays most videos at 15fps. Is youtube useless? Remember that, despite what most people here seem to think, the rebel t1i is NOT a pro camera. If you want 30fps get a 5d2.

  • LOL Do you speak english? OK, I’ll spell it out for you given that there is absolutely nothing in my comment that is homophobic.

    Definition:

Adj. 1. faux – not genuine or real; being an imitation of the genuine article.

1080p at 20 fps is not a genuine, real or useful feature because it only produces jerky looking video – therefore it is a FAUX feature. Real 1080p is a minimum of 24 fps, and even that is not good for any serious movement or action.

Keep the real and actual definition of faux in mind before responding with completely worthless and innacurate accusations JCL.

  • Have you seen the video from the 1080p 20 fps T1i/500D? It is jerky looking. If you want decent youtube video you have to start with smooth video or it only gets worse, not better.

  • I think JCL was referring to the “gay” word “tom” used in the first post. Methinks JCL hit the wrong reply button.

  • I think he meant to respond to the parent comment from “tom” which does contain said unnecessary homophobic commentary.

  • The 500D is not a pro camera – that’s right. But neither is the 5DMkII. As far as we’re talking about video… keep that in mind. So I can’t see any reason the 500D should not have 30fps (besides marketing or physical limitations).

  • Perhaps he was. Though the word gay has several uses. Tom could have been sarcastically showing his lack of lively mood for the features, and I gave him the benefit of that use rather than jump to it being a dispersion. The dictionary doesn’t get to anything about one’s sexual preferences until the 5th definition – why JCL assumed it was being used against homosexuality is interesting.

    The dictionary defines gay:

    1. having or showing a merry, lively mood: gay spirits; gay music.

    2. bright or showy: gay colors; gay ornaments.

    3. given to or abounding in social or other pleasures: a gay social season.

    4. licentious; dissipated; wanton: The baron is a gay old rogue with an eye for the ladies.

    5. homosexual.

    6. of, indicating, or supporting homosexual interests or issues: a gay organization.

  • huh?

The 500D does have 30 fps in 720p mode.

The 5D2 might not be a “pro” camera as the 1Ds3, but it is definately prosumer or semi-pro. The Rebel is targeted to upgrading point and shooters and shooting manual HD video with a DSLR is a fairly serious task not likely to be used by people buying a family camera. So it makes sense Canon would not include manual video control on the Rebel line at this point.

  • –in the always too short time to get it done.–

you get time to figure it out ? we have to open an drawer an pull out the ready product ;)

  • I thought we were talking about 1080p? Both, the 500D and 5DMkII are DSLRs. And not pro camcorders. They are DSLRs with the capability to shoot videos (which is a great thing as far as I am concerned).
If a DSLR is able to shoot video, why don’t give it fully manual control over the video?
But I totally agree with you concerning the “family camera” thing. Canon is going to let the custumer pay the price (of a 5DMkII) to get fully manual controls, I’m afraid…

  • You can take still pictures with a manual setting.
If canon wants the video function to be something usefull adn not a dazzle they should concider giving it the same amount of controll as the still images.

I, for one whould gladly wealcome that!

a cheap lightweight videocamera that takes canon lenses!

  • Your “sources” have gone to the crapper. Third wrong date in a row. Are you just picking dates at random hoping to get lucky?

  • I think these specs are higher for the 2000d, very close to the 500d…

    I think it will be more like a 450d with a “2000d” on it…

    Maybe for chrismas…:P

  • Of course there are few advanced or even pro shooters who wouldn’t mind a cheap 500D with 1080 30p and full manual control, but this isn’t the target market for the camera. The 5D2 is targeted at advanced to pro shooters willing to drop $2700 on a body and are going to demand as many features as possible. We will not see an uprising of Rebel/500D shooters to get manual video controls because they most likely will not shoot 1080p video more than enough to get bogged down in how to edit and show it and never use it again and Canon knows it.

  • No, they are taxing cameras, not people.

The way stores markup products based on their costs, if they have an additional 12.5% added to their cost, the camera price might go up by 20-25%. Sales would plummet.

The threat of this could easly be why they are holding off on full 24 fps or faster HD.

Unfortunately, the rest of the world won’t get it either, whatever the reason.

  • The handful of advanced shooters looking to pick up a cheap light DSLR for HD video is not who the Rebel/500D is targeted towards – it’s targeted at first time DSLR buyers and upgraders from point and shoot cameras.

Working with stills and HD video are not the same things. Most anyone can do some basic processing & resizing stills to either print, post on Facebook, or email them. Editing and delivering HD video is not so easy and the reality is most family shooters are not going to do that much less be upset about the lack of manual video control. If they do use the video, they’ll probably be happy with the auto settings and be impressed with the HD quality just as most family shooters use auto for their camcorders not manual.

Target market defines the priorities for manufacturers. That’s just the way it is.

We’re more likely to see manual 1080p on the 60D when it comes out.

  • Actually, the sources for DPR are amazingly accurate. sometimes they are off on the timing, or Canon changes their plan, but the accuracy of the rumors has really improved.

Before CR, their were wild rumors all over the place, and all of them were way off.

  • LOL not buying it. Please post a legitimate source for this tax based on 24 fps or faster HD. The only place I’ve seen it is on rumor sites.

Also, last time I checked cameras do not spend money and can’t buy themselves. People pay the tax.

  • Yeah I mean if we want to hear something which may or may not be true, we will go to a rumors site. Get your act together CR!

  • Wow, great announcement today!
    I’m astonished.
I can do something like this too by simply picking random dates.
Poor man, what crappy sources you have…

  • well here’s another rumor, a cr4 type: tonight it’s gonna be dark as a dungeon…with a half a slice of a pale moon…;-) never mind. at this moment some 30 km north from here “The Boss” is live in concert…I guess according to his newest songs, canon are still “working on a dream”…;-)

  • I could be wrong, but don’t think tom’s comment was intended to be homophobic. I think he was just being a prat.

  • Why would the put an articulated screen on an entry level model when none of the models above have one?

  • 90% of the time. Really it’s us sad fools that get owned. When a crazy rumor goes up, we flock in like birds to see. Meanwhile he makes the money off his google adds! Smart guy, stupid us!

I have my hope the 60D gets out, 6 months to year from now….

  • STFU n00b. didn’t yo mama teach manners? be appreciative. besides, its really his sources that got pwn3d

  • Well… it’s Wednesday already….. for almost half the world…
so… hopefully it’ll be announced soon, otherwise CR guy will really get owned this time….arrrrr….

  • ha ha, someone was thinking that the camera was to be released on June “31st” :)

  • There is a Tuesday every week, you know… Nobody said it’s gonna be *this* Tuesday!

  • 60D will be announced Thursday, according to our trustworthy source: “It is be the same as 50D, just some buttons are on other positions and have other functions.”

  • I have got this from Canon Singapore. They are launching EF-S 16-105 IS f2.8-4 on 19th of July, at present canon is not working on any new camera model except existing Mark 1Ds. This is 100% true!

  • I heard the 2000D was being discontinued June 2010. AE1 QL17 MarkIIi coming……..

  • Come on, give us some juicy lens rumors, so all the people here will wait with switching to Nikon…

My wishlist… (I know Canon guys are reading this forum too)

    EF-s 17-85 f/4 (improved optics and aperture)
EF 100 2.8 IS Macro (Macro + IS is a unique combination and a huge improvement)
EF 35 1.8 USM (to replace the 35 2.0, which is good, but too old)
EF 50 1.4 USM (with Ring-USM, Sigma-matching or better optics)
EF 20/24/28 1.8 USM (All non-L primes in the 20-35 range need an update very soon, the 20,24 and 28 need to have Ring-USM and an aperture of 1.8 minimum, priced around 350)

  • If Canon does not come with some good lens in EF-S series…. Nikon will give it a tough fight as Nikon is already there with an array of good rational budget lens.. I also heard Canon is coming up with a 16-105mm f2.8-4 Ef-S lens very soon…

  • If you are a gay activist, why are you spending your time here, instead to fight for your rights on dedicated websites? We are discussing about cameras here and if somebody is using the word, “gay” doesn’t mean automatically, that is tackling your rights? Capisci Nigga?

  • EF-S 16-105. I would rather it was 18-105. 16mm a bit to wide for a zoom barrel distortion will be huge.

  • Canon and Nikon have to come up with entry level DSLRs in $400-$500 (300-400pounds) .. with minimum features. It shud be a point and shoot DSLR with HD video. This will be biggest market for both. Rather than pushing people to buy more expensive more featured cameras.

  • for example.. olympus … E-520 was largest selling DSLR.. cuse it was a cheap upgrade from point and shoots…
