When Canon announced the Canon RF 200-800mm F6.3-9 IS USM, it immediately made its way onto Canon's “we can't meet demand” list. This has been a regular occurrence for most lenses Canon has announced in the last few years. We're not knocking Canon, as we do know there are still supply chain issues affecting lens manufacturing.

We have been told that next expected allocation of the Canon RF 200-800mm F6.3-9 IS USM is set for early August in the USA. We have also been told that most of the initial preorders have been filled, but some people that ordered back in January are still waiting for the lens.

There is some stock of the Canon RF 200-800mm F6.3-9 IS USM in Europe, but it's still difficult to find from the big retailers. Smaller retailers may be your best bet if you want one for some northern hemisphere summer fun.

  1. Movement in the backorder backlog! I placed an order for this lens at B&H Photo on February 7. On June 26, I got an e-mail from B&H that said in pertinent part:

"The Canon RF 200-800mm lens has been very popular and demand has exceeded Canon’s production capabilities. We have been working closely with Canon to do whatever is possible to secure delivery.

We just received a shipment update from Canon. Based on this information, we expect to ship out your order on or before August 9. Once your order ships, you will receive an email notification with tracking information. Please note that this information is based on current estimates and is subject to change."
  2. Difficult to find in Europe? One of the largest online retailers in the German speaking countries lists 10+ in stock and a larger national retailer 8 units readily available. I ordered one in February and got it within a week. Originally, I ordered from a small shop but it turned out to be a completely hopeless case and they are as of today in preorder mode. Therefore I can't confirm your statements about targeting small shops for better access to this really nifty lens.
  3. The 200-800 does look very nice, at the first view ... a second and a third view offers 2 or 3 details, that shows you, why the first look never is the best look at any product (only sure, its relativly cheap for a lens like this). Only the price for is to high - for me.

Could you please try to be more vague?
