EF 70-200 f/4L IS Mug
So everyone wants to know the story with these things.
There was some internal Canon stuff about these things that I said I wouldn't post here, so I'm not going to.
I can tell you the mugs are actually a Canon Canada thing. They're going to be available for sale in the near future. They'll also be limited edition. You should see them retailing for about $30.

I don't have a date on availability, but I will know soon. I may also be able to help our international friends get one. I have a source for them and plan to buy as many as I can and give them away.

I’ve been eying these off for a few days now! I love the 70-200 cups, but I saw a 24-105 too. (shame it wasn’t the 24-70!) I would buy either. It’s a good idea that should have been done ages ago. I’ll be watching the twitter for news of the 70-200 cups. :)

Haha at Gono Gerk’s comment. I own to 135mm f2L, so I completely understand where you’re coming from! As for that eBay post, thanks but I’m keen on the 70-200 instead. I can see a lot of international customers getting severely price gauged on this one. I hope it doesn’t end up like that because I don’t want to be one of them!

I’d also love to have one of the 24-105 mugs, one source has apparently already sold out and the other asks 40€ for it. Quite costly to get just for fun.
BTW: I doubt this will really be a limited edition… if the OEM feels he can make money out of it, he will.

This mug rocks…considering canon canada sticks it to us every chance they get with the xchange rates & inflated prices (ie. 580exii @ $550!), we should try to keep the mugs here. Getting mugs for friends in other countries will undoubtedly lead to a price increase here, and ruin it for canadians. Canon Canada has finally has done something nice for us – let canon usa/uk/europe/whereever look after their own customers. Canon Canada Coffee Mugs – NOT FOR EXPORT!!!!!
BTW i realize this seems rather lame/trivial but it is what it is – a small useless hollow victory…of sorts. Maybe.

If it eases your pain: Canon is not only ripping of Canadians. The 580 EX II is 370€ at the cheapest retailers, which is around 520CAD. But that 370€ already include VAT, so if the 550CAD you quote is without VAT, then you really have my deep sympathy.
Still, the 1$=1€ exchange rates virtually every vendor of photo gear (or computer hardware) uses to set their prices in Europe are ridiculous.

The site he has linked to only offers shipping to Canada and USA. CR also said he would help make those avaible to international buyers. Thats why he should note down some people from overseas.
If J Swan saw these, he’d write to Canon and ask if they could make one based on the 35 f/2.0, then he’d write to Fleshlight.com to see if they made any inserts that would fit it.

Some Canadian entrepreneur should buy a whole bunch of these, sell them on ebay for twice the price. With a $30 profit margin on a hundred of these mugs you could buy a real 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II and still get $500 in pocket money. At $60 you could probably effortlessly sell 1000 of these. 100 should be no risk at all.

I’d be a little worried of putting hot coffee into some unknown type of plastic.
Hot liquids can leech plastic chemicals out into the drink.
In particular a chemical called Bisphenol A (BPA)

Don`t panic – there`s a Youtube video showing they have an aluminium (or maybe steel) cup insert inside. Of course the paint used on the outside probably contains lead!

Why doesn’t Canon Canada just make as many as people will buy? Seems stupid to let the eBay arbitrageurs make a huge profit based on a false scarcity, when Canon must have the ability to produce as many of these as demand dictates. I guess big companies like Canon still haven’t learned to use Web 2.0 to enhance their agility and responsiveness to loyal customers. Sigh.

Warranties don’t transfer when buying in the US and shipping to Canada. If you need any warranty work, you have to ship it back to a US dealer and a huge cost, and pay to ship it back. Don’t know off hand about Canon, but Nikon has a 5 year warranty in Canada and only a 1 year in the US. Not worth trying to save a $150 on a lens, when you can have a 4 additional years of warranty in Canada!!
