$200 gift from Canon
A reader sent some information they overheard about new rebates coming in May.

Apparently a retailer knocked $200 off of a 50D & Lens purchase because they knew the rebates were coming.

Sounds like a dealer rebate.

thanks Steven

  • At a Canon-sponsored event I attended today, a Canon rep mentioned that May would likely be a “good time” for 50D buying.

  • The Dealers have to give the rebates out of their funds, and then fill out the paperwork to get credit back from Canon, so all the rebates are dealer rebates in a twisted way.

Typically, right after raising prices, Canon then has a summer rebate and a fall rebate. It does not mean that a product is being discontinued, they usually include their high profit items like $1000 lenses, $500 flashes, and a camera or two.

It is a good time to buy, because prices will go up again.

  • Will they raise prices on some products like lenses and flashes and then implement the rebates and it will be the same price? I think Nikon did this after raising prices.

  • I am wishing for a rebate on the 70-200 f/4L IS – WITHOUT a camera/flash combo purchase.

  • Well, it may be a good time to refresh my lens collection. Or buy a second backup body. Or buy a 50d just for fun !
In here we have a photography show and there are lots of discounts specially on accessories (like memories and filters)

  • They rebate more mature products, or ones not selling well with lots of inventory. Many of the $1000 lenses were designed years back, and all development and tooling has long ago been amortized, so they have a big profit and they can cut the price. I believe that lens prices have risen recently, so $50 or $100 off is just getting back to where they were in December.

Not a chance of seeing a rebate on the 5D MK II, they can’t make enough to meet demand now, no need to stimulate demand. The 50D is not a hot seller and they had a 50D camera / lens combo rebate in the winter, Expect it again.

I’ve not seen a previous 1D series camera rebate in the recent past, but times are tough, so who knows??

  • They have offered a $75.00 or so rebate on this lens (70-200 F/4L IS) in the past, so it may be up again.

In 2008, here were the offerings, no way to know what there will be this year.

    EF 70-200 f/4L IS USM – $75

  • new NEWS,

in my country they started rebating!

the canon 5d mark II got about $300 rebate and now is sold at $2373 ! the 50d got about $200.

  • The site is cam4selldotcom which is based on KSA and sells for KSA and Middle East. The listed price for the body is 9300 SR. this equals $2475.. sorry for miscalculations.

  • I’m a Canon dealer in the USA and its official. May 3rd! Big Rebates! And Powershots too!

  • Just saw the 100 macro go up $65 over night on Amazon! That’s substantial, considering it only costs $490. Seems they’re prepping for this so called “rebate” already. What a crock.

  • Again as a dealer I AGREEE 100%!!!!! A major crock and thorn in my side! They only let us make 10% profit margin at full MAP (minimum advertised pricing) price. Thats the real world prices that don’t seem to deviate at all from store to store.
example. RebelXSI 18-55 kit, MAP $799, net $704. I know really making a killing here aren’t I? Why I love this business I can’t answer. Clearly not the money. Guess I just love that everyday is like Christmas and it brings new boxes of toys I get to play with and borrow before other people :)

The instant rebates for the dealer really suck the same as they do for the consumers except that when you buy whatever it is half the time after the rebate is subtracted from the price we are actually BELOW the cost! (litteraly losing money on every transaction, till the check comes in, oh and paying up front mind you!)
We get the money back, but again takes 6-10 weeks. Just like on the consumer side. I love it that it does help sell, consumers love it but ultimately I need to make a small profit somewhere down the line. And if an employee lets it go out the door with out doing all the necesary paper work, we’re screwed! no getting the money no matter what!
Example, I just got 2 weeks ago my check from the program that ran through Christmas. WTF! Oh and I’m lacking $500 worth of rebates. No funny business, thats my money! I held up my side but because of some paperwork snafu, “reminds me of the movie Office Space” I most likey sold several items under my cost before expenses ie, credit card processing, employee wages, oh and the overhead of having an actual brick and mortar store. And I’ll never recoup it. ughhh now I’m really depressed!
Sorry for the rant, but I hope I didn’t fall on deaf ears here. Everything I said is true and obviously heart felt. Have a great day everyone!

  • The 5DMKII can be had for less than the common price of $2,799. I bought mine this weekend at a store event featuring Canon Professional Services and Canon representatives. Retail price = $2,500.

  • The price for the canon 24-70 2.8L also jumped $150 in the last few days. Therefore bringing the rebates in a couple of weekes will bring the price back to where it originally was… hmmmmm
    Suprise us canon.

  • lol, look at the “amazonians” the dealers raised the price to $2,849.99. So much for rebates..

  • I bought a 50D kit (with EF-S 18-200 IS) in Japan last week for $1600. Got a $200 mail-in rebate to bring it down to $1400. Free Lowepro bag and 4-year (single-repair) warranty as well. Great deal!! I’m sure Canon is about to push 50D’s with rebates worldwide.

  • I will say this – after hearing about some people’s troubles with mail-in rebates, I would only consider the instant, or dealer rebates!
