From NL
They received a comment that the xxD isn't dead, it' just resting. They'll use the camera to give a longer time between the 7D and 7D Mark II.

Weekend Rumor Mill
Two comments came in saying not to expect the 1Ds Mark IV announcement until mid August.

Lenses
A lens announcement in the late spring as well as in August.  As usual, no word on lenses.

There will be a new 300 2.8 & 400 2.8 being tested at the World Cup and not yet for sale.

2011
A 5D Mark III will be coming as well as a new full frame camera below the 5D Mark III.

We will also see a new EF mount video camera system.

Site Design
I've had a new site design completed for about a week now and will be doing the switch on Sunday. So expect some minor downtime.

I'm also working to troubleshoot some back end issues that make the site unavailable every so often. The problem has been isolated.

  • So that means that basically we wont see the 60D until halfway through the 7D’s lifecycle (which will probably mirror the 3 year cycle of the 5D).

That means that there will be no 60D until sometime next year.

  • A new EF mount video camera system sounds completely out of this world. If its true, it could be the game changer everyones in the video industry is looking for. It just can’t come soon enough.

  • “…a new full frame camera below the 5D Mark III”? Hmmm… Not sure what place would that fit in.

  • I have mixed feelings about an EF mount video camera system. My fear is Canon will start pricing their EF camera lenses commensurate to those of traditional motion picture lenses. Those users wouldn’t bat an eye at paying upwards of $50,000 for a lens, and now Canon is going to throw back the curtain on their entire EF lens line-up?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for Canon expanding the use of the EF mount, as more lenses sold SHOULD result in lower prices for all of us (not to mention Canon’s continued dedication to the EF mount). However, given Canon’s track record with significant price increases for each new lens, I seriously doubt pricing will get any better for the average lens purchaser (even though Canon’s volume should skyrocket).

  • 5D Mark III = 7D FF + updates/extras

    Full frame below 5D Mark III = 5D Mark II + 550D/T2i Specs, basic a FF 550D/T2i

  • Wow, CR1! Somebody pulled a rumor from his a** and emailed it here, let the discussions go crazy! Woo hoo!

“They received a comment that the xxD isn’t dead, it’ just resting. They’ll use the camera to give a longer time between the 7D and 7D Mark II.”

I don’t think that’s the reason for the xxD line but whatever.

From the department of blindingly obvious:

“A 5D Mark III will be coming”

Wow, no kidding! Canon will update its bestseller? What a surprise!

“as well as a new full frame camera below the 5D Mark III.”

That would be nice if it wasn’t made up. Wonder what they will call it, 9D?

Let’s have more totally made up and unsubstantiated rumours!

  • don’t get upset at a rumor site for posting rumors. there are plenty of photo NEWS websites to follow if you think everything has to be substantiated.

  • Boo, I want the 5dlll now. Tho the 5dll is cheaper in the UK now than the U.S. which is good for those upgrading from the original version.

  • well, delaying the xxd line just cost canon a customer. i just bought a nikon. i was waiting until mid-march but can’t wait any longer. don’t like the ergonomics of the T1i or the crammed pixels of the 18mp 7d/T2i sensor, and the old 50d with no video and poor dynamic range won’t cut it.

  • Why on Earth would you think I’m “upset”? I’m mocking anyone who takes such a rumour seriously and/or wishes to discuss it in any serious manner.

  • I really don’t buy the EF video camera rumor … I don’t see the market aimed. Canon can not release a vid cam with no electric zoom and such a zoom with focus through the full range is something very expensive for a big sensor as an APS. It should be a 18-105, with constant focus and at least f 2,8 (usually video lens start under f2 …) that will be very very expensive lens ! without such a lens, the market will be indies filmakers only. The cash made with a video camera comes mostly from prosumers and communication industry, for shure they won’t buy a camera with no zoom ability. That’s the reason why video camera sensor are so small, 2/3 inch or less, that makes it easier and cheaper to make a zoom …

  • Even if a 60d were released, there’s no way canon would have had a sensor under 18mp so canon would have lost you as a customer anyway. I personally would like a 60d (for the frame rate) over the t2i but am unwilling to pay the price of the 7d. I’ve been waiting for it and hoping but last week decided that I would go with the t2i. There just doesn’t seem to be enough elements to ‘upgrade’ between the t2i and the 7d and charge 1100-1300 for without cannibalizing parts of the 7d market.

  • If making a switch is that easy for you, you probably never invested in lens or flashes… so… enjoy your kit lens.

  • i just bought the 7d with the recent rebates, after a week of use my final verdict is: shame on canon to put in such a pc of art and machinery such a pc of sht 18 megafreakinguselsspixels cmos. i really wished this was a 16mp like is big bro 1dmk4, really this cameras images only look good if you have plenty of light , i haven’t been able to get a single image worth keeping in low light, there’s no software out there, not canon latest DPP or adobe camera raw of lightroom that can resolve the noise issue. is just imposible. big dissapoinment and hear so many reviews saying this camera was good, even my rebel XSI 12mp noise can be solved with simple NR software but not this one ….. if i just could … damm i just like the ergonomics and the other goodies omn the camera … gonna have to learn to live with it and just use on bright sunny days or in studio !

  • sounds reasonable, though. as a lot of people have noted, there’s still good space between the 7D and T2i for a 60D-type product, but releasing all three within about a year of one another does seem silly and self-poaching.

the rest of the rumors seem a bit fanciful, I still don’t think Canon feels a lower-price point FF is necessary. there’s no competition, despite the demand – Sony dropped their A850 which everyone thought would be a game-changer price-wise … until nothing happened. how many people ran out and bought A850s? (other than the guys at luminous landscape)

  • My guess:

60D in autumn: an updated 50D with the new Digic V chip, all goodies from 550D and some new features close to 7D (artificial horizon, some additional AF-assist points).

It means a good update from 50D, but as usual not everything. It gives a good prosumer camera not on par with 7D, but making people feel above the 550D.

  • I sympathize with Michal.

I’m not passing judgment on the rumor site (as I’ve been enjoying it), but given how few of the rumors hold water (even in Nikonland), especially recently, it becomes clear that most “rumors” are just random people making guesses, instead of things heard from, say, Canon workers.

Before it was “something will come soon, trust me.” Now that everything’s gone quiet, there’s a lot of “there won’t be anything for a while.” Again, seems like it’s just people talking…

  • I agree that the idea of 60D sounds reasonable and I am amongst those people who think that there is enough space between 7D and xxxD for another model but for me there is a huge philosophical difference between discussing a possibility of Canon introducing such camera (based on their previous models, trends etc) and discussing half-a**ed, made up rumours that are sold as facts and taken seriously. Assuming that xxD will price-wise slot exactly in between xxxD and 7D by dropping some of the more advanced features of 7D such a camera would be in a market space of itself and I don’t think it would cannibalize any of the existing Canon market.

Good point about Sony 580. I’m still surprised why it did not sell much better than it did so far. Wonder why?

    1) FF is not everything, having a full-size sensor does not automatically make it a good camera.

    2) Marketing – does public actually know about this camera?

    3) Image – Does public even know that Sony makes DSLRs?

    What else went wrong?

  • I have a 580EX and 3 lenses — non of them kit lenses. And I think my next camera will be a Nikon. Canon isn’t making the tools I need.

BTW I do most of my lighting with Profoto, which will work with Nikon, Phase One, Hasselblad, etc.

  • Canon could easily release such a zoom in EF mount and say it is a lens designed for video.

    You don’t need electronic zoom.

All the popular zooms now are “Cine Style” with no motors and if you want a zoom motor you use a Preston Microforce.

Even on 2/3″ cameras the Cine Style zooms are the fashion.

I totally agree with your other points though about the focus and speed etc.

The thing with a camera like this is that those on a tight budget could just use stills lenses and those with a bit more cash to splash could pay the extra for the better lenses.

Yes a lens like this could easily cost 50, 60 even 100K (The current bread and butter cine zoom is the Angenieux 24-290mm Optimo and it costs this much) and if it was good, people in Film and TV would lap it up.

  • Well, alert the media. I’ll make a press release!

    Press Release: For Immediate Release

Joe, a poster on canonrumors.com, is pleased to announce he has completed the purchase of a Canon 5D mark II. Joe was quoted as saying “Just ordered a new 5D Mark II from Adorama on Friday”. The Canon 5D mark II is a well know and very respected camera. It can take optic devices, called lenses, to make image on its digital sensor. This camera can convert photons into an electron signal, and thereby create ‘digital images’. Adding to this announcement, Joe also farted at 2:30 EST, a fact that he wanted everyone aware of.

  • Ah great, I’m glad the release finally went live, now where’s my ticker tape parade?

  • Coming up at 11, Bugger has been awarded the “Biggest Douchesnozzle on Planet Earth” Award. He beat out Adolf Hitler, Osama Bin Laden, Kim Jong Il, and Tom Cruise. Join us at 11 to see how much of an asshat he really is.

  • With 7D prices dropping rapidly, a 60D would have to be priced below it, however, with discounts and cashbacks, 7d have been bought for close to $1300 recently (not available now, so there is not much room for a 60d unless Canon is able to boost the 7d price back up.

A new lower tier FF would likely be below $2,000 or else the 5D MK III would have more pro features and jump to $3,000.

It just could be that the overall price of cameras will come down, while lens prices go up.

Like printers, manufacturers give them away but charge a fortune for ink. Polaroid started it all by giving their cameras very low prices and making their profit on the film.

  • Perhaps the lower tiered FF will be a 7Ds or 7DmkII, Canon did say that the 7D was an addition to their line up not a replacement for anything so there is a good likely hood that there will be a new xxD.

  • There is nothing stopping Canon from adding some uber $ Lenses to their lineup for those with big budgets.

  • The xxD isn’t dead but it’s just resting… that’s what the man at the pet shop told me about the Norwegian Blue parrot that I bought from him.

  • I’ve gone from a 30D to 50D (which did replace the 40D IMO regardless of what Canon claims) and now have a 5D2 & 7D. To me the 7D is the 60D, it’s exactly what I would have expected for the next xxD (except the price).

  • why on earth, you ask? well, mostly your excessive sarcasm. doesn’t sound like you’re mocking anyone, just whining because. . you’re upset. by the way, who cares if someone takes a rumor seriously or not? who are you – the almighty canon rumor enlightener?

  • “Sarcasm is the rhetorical device of using a characterization of something or someone in order to express contempt” – if I were upset I would be complaining, not being sarcastic, please get your logic right.

  • That is why I was afraid to buy the 7D. The sensor…. Maybe this ‘cram as many pixels on a sensor that you can’ will have to run its course in a couple of years, just like glossy screens and cases on laptops. When cooler heads prevail, we will get back to matte screens and less dense sensors…. ;-)

  • lol. nice job detective S! actually, you are half correct. i am a recent college graduate investing in my first slr, so i do not have any lenses or flashes. for this reason i also don’t have any brand loyalty and gave canon and nikon a fair shot at my business. where your reasoning fails is in your assumption that a first-time dslr buyer will be satisfied with just a kit lens. actually i ordered a tokina 11-16 f2.8, a 35mm f1.8, and a 70-300 f4.5-5.6 vr (my dusk and night shooting – and obviously indoor – usually calls for a wide angle) with my nikon. for those that aren’t familiar with the tokina – yes i chose a DX camera. for how good you are at reading between the lines, i’m sure you can see my previous post and figure out which one it is.

Michal, pleeeeaaaassseee respond to this telling me how stupid and amateurish i am. i love a good laugh.

  • the xxD series from canon is completely dead, there’s simply not room for them, the rebels caught up with them … jejeje, 7d prices will drop, then canon will sport a 7Ds or 7DmkI with a 16mp H sensor like big bro 1dmk4 for the price of the actual 7D. 5Dmk4 will proably sport a 24-25mp sensor since canon seems to be defying laws of phisycs squizing megapixels into tiny spaces ! jejeje ….. thats gonna be fun to watch !

  • finally thanks to the universe and my believing that i had a lemon (a bad copy) …. today after after doing some deep research and updating the dpp to ver 3.8.0 i had found out that the best way to get the most out the 7D images si to use canon’s very own software, forget lightroom and photoshop since adobe hasn’t been able to solve anon camera raw very well…. to my surprise i today i tried the latest DPP and it works guys …NR and Image Shaperning works like a charm. I am able to make crispy images now … am so happy !

  • Were you using the latest lightroom and photoshop updates? I can’t imagine they haven’t gotten it right by now. Having to use DPP to get good results would be a real bummer…. I don’t like DPP one bit.

    Thanks for the update.

  • I actually most hoping to see a APS-H camera (16MP) with 7D + 5D markii features. It’s good for HD video (more tele-zooming), and good enough to provide clean image (imagine 1D mark iv).

  • A freind of mine keeps joking, there will never be a 60D.
    Maybe a 59D, maybe a 61D. but never a 60D ;-)

  • jochystarz, ive been planning on buying the 7d also but im not yet convinced coz i hear a lot of bad comments. does it really have better IQ than the rebels or perhaps the xxDs?

  • From eos 400D we have seen 40D 450D 50D 500D 550D, next in the line should be 60D and that will happen through this year, 50D is now the only camera with no video capabilities, 1000D also but if a 2000D comes out it will have video
40D and 50D are some of the best selling canon cameras, I do not think canon wants to end with that
My bet, after the summer, so the 7D has been out for a year
    18mpx or improved 15mpx sensor
new af system for xxD series, 9 cross + 6 assist (like 5DII)
    same screen as 550D
    Digic V
    Video

  • Because at the 850 level of camera, most people have established collections of glass and aren’t going to drop everything they’ve got and replace it en mass.

Reichman views the camera as a tool and isn’t wedded to any particular vendor nor system – except that which delivers the best quality photos for his work. There aren’t a lot of people like that. Obviously he must make the time to learn a new camera system when he changes.

The 850 showed that you don’t need to be Canon or Nikon to produce a DSLR that produces a camera with high quality photos coming out of it.

  • My question is this:

Does Canon leak this sort of vague “coming up later is…” information to keep us interested, or does Nikon introduce it to fuel our frustrations and to get us thinking of switching? Which one of them is playing us? Any answers?

  • Voila :) ~ I never said you were making a mistake but switching brand is a bit more tricky when you have 15000 worth of lens + accessories…

  • My experience was that the 7D had better noise handling characteristics about ISO 800, but was worse than the 50D below that.

I purchased and returned my 7D within a week.

  • “Wow, no kidding! Canon will update its bestseller? What a surprise!”

Eh, its best seller–in Japan, at least–is the 500D (“Kiss X3”), followed closely by the 550D (“Kiss X4”) then the 7D. There are many other combinations of kits with the 450D, 500D, 550D and 7D between those and the 5D2. The 5D2 is outselling the 50D, though. (See http://bcnranking.jp/category/subcategory_0008.html)

The 7D is selling very well. It looks like Canon have no reason to hurry out a 60D, as many (Japanese) people are willing to spend the extra cash on a 7D. Unfortunately, I had to stretch to buy a 40D, so my economic bungee cord would snap if I stretched for a 7D. Until a 60D arrives, I have no affordable upgrade path. However, as I’m not in the market for one just yet, I’ll just see what shows up in the next couple of years. Perhaps the 7D will be discounted by then.

  • One thing I have learned about low-light photography is that very often “low light” = “bad light” and there is no hope of taking good photos just by jacking up the ISO. It is not much different to attempting a masterpiece in full sunshine at noon, or increasing the built-in flash power on a point-and-shoot and expecting a transformative effect. If the light is bad, the camera cannot fix it.

I used to be disappointed with the IQ of many of my low light photos until I realised that I was only disappointed by the IQ because that was all I noticed when looking at the photo; the actual image was boring and flat because the light was just plain bad. Nowadays, in those situations, out comes the flash, as it will give better results. I bounce it about or use it off-camera. I often use it at very low power, just to improve the ambient light a little.

There are opportunities to take good shots in low light, but only where the light is right. When it’s right, I rarely notice ISO noise or a little motion blur or camera shake, as the image captures my attention first. If you have a collection of low-light shots, browse through them and you’ll probably find the same thing: the ones where you notice the bad IQ are the boring ones.

  • you express contempt for things without being upset (as in distressed; disturbed) about them. that’s just rude!

  • If they released such a camera, it would not effect current lens prices. They would create a cinema series, with proper manual focus rotation. They already make lenses for broadcast, and would just create a similar product for this rumored camera. Ideally it would have a 2MP sensor, which would provide exceptional low light ability.

  • I’ll go for an 5DII or III, started saving up. takes a while, therefore more likely the 5D III after one or two years of relase…or: if the myth of a lower sub 5D FF would receive an excellent feedback I’d go for that one…maybe less MP…but 5D Mk…is envisioned ;-) Currently shooting a 30D. And it does well.

  • That would be a nice camera. As things do, the 18MP sensor will be improved, there may be a couple of tweaks to the movie mode and the AF system would be improved from previous generations. I think there will be a 13 point AF system–keeping the diamond pattern with four new center assist points (all cross type).

  • 5D Mark II + 7D features = 3D
sure hope Canon retains the 21 Megapixels, and focus on
high frame rate, better ISO performance, shorter shutter lag,
implementation of the cool iFCL feature from 7D, pop-up flash
    is welcome

5D Mark II upgrade = 5D Mark III
Canon would announce tons of new features
    but nothing earth-shattering.

And I agree, Canon should eliminate XXD line
since 7D is selling well, and the Rebel line
is still the high volume seller cash cow.

  • I hope they keep the xxD line, if they don’t they wont have a camera I want. I can’t bring myself to buy a 7D as for every good image I’ve seen I’ve also seen a noisy one and I don’t want a 5D as I seem to be the only person in the world who wants a built in flash. A Nikon D700 would be ideal but means ditching my 9 lenses.

  • the only new feature I wish to be implemented in a 5DIII is the 7D AF system…as I read several threads over at dpr I don’t seem to be the only one…My aim is fine low light performance…no sports…therefore excellent high ISO and accurate AF are very welcome

  • And when some of your fellow photographic friends (in my case a bunch of German railway photographers) have threatened you with death should you switch over to something else.

  • The 60d will be full frame, that is why the 5D II just got the firmware update.

Canon have got to keep the price up somehow, the 7d is available for just over £1000, the 5D II is at £1700 or so if it were not for the recent firmware update it would be selling for around £1200 right now after all it came out in September 2008 and that is a year and a half with only about £300 off retail price from launch.

  • why would you ask for aps-h when the natural progression is full frame XXD?

  • it sounds dry when Canon can just take a great DSLR system and make it a great HDSLR system, which it is already. If they can make a better video camera that takes EF lenses – and keeps the same focal length its interesting, any crop business then DSLR full frame is what it’s about.

  • Canon has no direct competition with Nikon D3. I’m not worried so much about the low-light capability (7D at ISO 3200 works fine in the crappiest lighting conditions I work in), but full frame with a faster motor would give me what I’ve been missing on sports assignments. 8 fps with a 12-18MP sensor would differentiate from 5D sufficiently to not poach Canon’s own line (especially if the MkIII goes toward 30MP, which would seem likely), and such a camera would fill a niche.

Portrait/wedding people will stay with 5D MkII/III, and Sports/News/Event shooters like me will go with the “7Ds,” as Son of Daguerre has put it.

I can’t switch to Nikon anyway because of the “backwards focusing”, but a camera like “7Ds” would remove all desire, especially if they keep it at or below the 5DMkII price range.

  • For budget concern (tele lenses are so expensive), I think 1.3x is the best bet. Besides, clean image in high ISO is very important for me, so APS-C is just not as good. We can see how excellent 1D mark IV performs, so APS-H with 16MP should be a very well bet for a budget good camera. 35mm Movie cameras are about APS-H size, if I remember correctly.

  • I don’t know why but, I could see the 60D with a full frame sensor, 12-15 Mp like the 5D mk1, cca. 6 FPS, and 25k ISO..

before someone states how much of a dumbass I am.. think about it.. say it’s a improved 5D 12Mp sensor.. with nice ISO performance.. a few more AF sensors and 6 FPS.. now how nice would that be? the AF would not be as good as 7D, less MP, lower FPS buut it would be a heck of a lot better than the rebel..

the only downside for canon would be the EF-S.. not selling? but hey.. the EF would go in kits like hell.. and they are quitesome more money than crop lenses..

I would buy one for sure.. if not that.. the 5D mk3 :)

  • Not likely. Well, I don’t know too much about marketing. But I guess, it’s not likely to have an FF body between the rebels and the 7D

  • i didn’t say it was likely, just that i could see it.. it would be a re-wisited 5D with a few more FPS and higher iso/performance.. all the camera you would need with the iso performance due to FF.. but it is highly unlikely.. atleast untill 70D or 80D, then if canon keeps pushing the Mp like he does.. FF will be a MUST in the xxD series.. unless they still go with the 90D and then come up with a new series for the FF xxD sucessor.. most likely if i think about it.. :)

  • Isn’t it better to own a 50D/550D and a f/2.8 17-55 than a 5D Mark 2 and a kit lens?
