EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS USM II Availability

Exciting times!
Now that one of the most wanted updates is official, folks are hammering me when they can get one! The following is all I know at the moment.
- Pricing from Calumet in Germany is €2399
- Canon UK’s site says available March, 2010
- I have no official pricing from anywhere yet.
- Pricing in Canada is TBA
- I can’t find anyone taking preorders yet, that should change today.
A few have asked, this is not a lens I’ll be buying. I’m a fast prime junky when working.

I have preordered mine yesterday at Calumet Germany. No problems here.

Hi,
I have just called in and talk to a sales rep. Makes it easier and since they know me pretty well by now, there where no problems placing the order.
According to them, I was the first in Germany placing an order with Calumet *g*

I won’t be getting this as well. Work doesn’t require it and very satisfied with the f/4L IS and fast primes.

I read in the press release (dutch version) advice price is 2969 euro’s….

It is around 3260 USD

283,500円（税込）is about US$3100?
Last summer the previous EF 70-200mm f/2.8 IS USM was going for $1600, this lens is basically double that cost.
“N” (see if that’ll get past the sensors) has a 70-200 2.8 II and a full frame camera back similar to the 5D but with much better ISO and autofocus, and you can get both for US$4800.
My guess is that “N” is going to sell a *lot* of FF cameras and pro lenses if this is going to be Canon’s new strategy.

Korean news reports that it will be available early February and that it will cost a bit over 3,000,000 Won (around $3k USD).

As a data point, Calumet Germany is asking 2,499 euros for the Nikon 70-200 VR II.
Calumet US is asking $2,399 USD for the same lens.

That’s a good reference point. So a simple currency conversion is really beside the point. We can hope, then, that if Calumet Germany wants 2399 euros for the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L II IS USM, then street prices in the USA will be less than $2399. But we’ll have to wait and see.

I used to think hammering boards was a fools errand to send a message to Canon, now I think there is merit to hammering all boards. Show your distaste for $3000 lenses and Canon will get the message. $2200 seems reasonable.

Anyone knows the price history of the original 70-200mm lens. Is it because Canon try to keep the price high until they get rid of all the old inventory?

I have to agree. The current 70-200 2.8 IS lens is flat out amazing. I personally can’t justify the higher price. We’re getting into the realm of lenses being so good, there really isn’t any reason to get something “nicer”, because the lens won’t make any difference for almost all photographers.

I strongly believe 70-200mm IS will be discountinued.
So it will only left 70-200mm IS II and the one without IS.
This is inline with the F4 version. Also the price is likely to be USD2199-2399.

Canon’s person at their CES booth said to expect US availability soon, March or April. He also said he hasn’t been told the price and doesn’t think that Canon has finalized their US price point yet, but that he expects they will announce a price and date sometime in the next week or so. Take that for what it is, a fairly knowledgeable canon employee making what seem like well educated guesses, but guesses nonetheless. He also refused to even speculate on the price.
I had a chance to play with the lens a bit (well under 2 minutes max) and in that short time, my subjective stand-out difference compared to the mark 1 was faster focus. It felt like the camera/lens combo was more sure of itself, it picked a spot and quickly focused it. Of course, I don’t have the opportunity to look at the photos on the pixel level, so who knows if it got the focus right, but it did pick it authoritatively and looked, through the viewfinder and on the camera display, pretty well focused. The other thing was it seemed quieter. Granted, CES was really really loud, so who knows if the absence of noise from the lens was real. Can’t wait to play with a copy of this lens in more evaluation-friendly environment.
The other (off topic) thing I found interesting was how much Canon was pushing the EOS line for video. A few people on this site have commented that maybe a lot of lenses are going to be revamped to deliver better results for HD video, and based on the push they’re making at CES, its certainly possible.

I think their decision to not announce the US price is all because of the current rebates going on right now for the original.
