1D Mark IV Information

Canon Rumors

Arrival in North America?
I’ve heard from a couple of people we should see the cameras starting to appear tomorrow or Thursday. I can’t let you know where as their stock is already called for and they don’t need 3000 phone calls tomorrow. :)

I’m still waiting to see when Adorama and B&H will have them.

1D Mark IV Mini Review
Brad Mangin had the privilege to shoot with the Mark IV at an NFL football game.

I don’t think he could have been happier with the performance of the camera and especially the autofocus system.

Thanks Brad

  • If Canon is smart enough, they will release a set of Firmware Updates for every DSLR top of each line with Full HD capabilities: 1D/1Ds Mark IV, 5D Mark II and 7D.

That firmware would include FILMMAKING features requested by thousands of users around the world.

This is a reference list, a compilation of those features:

    http://5dmark2.wordpress.com/2009/12/17/canon-firmware-updates/

There are of course many “stills related” features that can be improved, but the HUGE potential not yet exploited is in the Video/Cinematography area.

Taking advantage of those enormous capabilities is more than logical and a good business to get and keep more sales on each camera with insignificant costs, as compared to a whole new design.

That will make those cameras even more versatile and suitable for professional filmmaking purposes.

  • I’m hearing nothing but bad things for people in Canada though. Have been trying to track down information but certainly stores in the West (vancouver for example) are saying that it will be MONTHS until all but a few will be able to get hold of one because of the high number that are being assigned to be used for the Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

Even if you are CPS member it seems to make no difference. CPS told me that members get priority over the deliveries, but the problem is that the stores dont seem to know this, or they are just playing ignorant and ignoring it to simplify things. Most of the stores I called told me this can’t be true, even though Canon CPS told me this specifically this morning. Very frustrating.

  • “To be brutally honest, I found the Canon EOS-1D Mark III to be a complete disaster. I consider it to be the biggest lemon professional 35mm camera in modern photographic history. I have a considerable investment in Canon cameras and lenses, and was reluctant to jump-ship to Nikon.”

This quote says it all. My 1D3 is on its way back to Canon for the “miracle” autofocus calibration fix – in case my sarcasm wasn’t obvious I’m not expecting much.

Canonrumors guy: back in March you sent your 1D3 in for the same procedure, did you notice any difference?

  • Canon has already announced that they will release the new 5D MK II firmware early in 2010, but exactly when is the only rumor.

  • As “Scalesusa” said, Canon already announced firmware update will be released. Expect it soon.

If they are smart enough (we do think they are indeed), they will release even further updates with more “filmmaking” features/improvements.

You can also join the “Call Canon” campaign adding your “2 cents” to encourage Canon for *FIXES & IMPROVEMENTS*, like thousands of users already did.

    *It’s still in progress.*

  • I was one of the biggest 1D3 defenders out there. I used the camera exclusively at weddings and for landscape work. I had never had an issue.

Then I had a kid and started to notice when he was motoring around in small spaces that critically sharp results were sporadic.

The latest fix I had done didn’t noticeably change anything for me.

I cannot wait to get my hands on a Mark IV.

  • Why so much fuss over what is a very incremental upgrade over the Canon 1D III?

    Canon 1D III – Canon 1D IV
    10MP – 16MP
ISO 6400 – ISO 102400 (Results will be hardly usable)
    No video – 1080P Video
    230,000 LCD – 920,000 LCD

All in the same body. Is this the best Canon could come up with after 3 years?

  • both of my 1D3 went back for calibration (i’m surprised you left it so long!) the difference was amazing

i had a 70-200 f2.8 IS calibrated at the same time

  • I think of you own and at happy with the results from a 1Diii, you can keep using it and not upgrade. Just like a lot of people still use and love their 5D classics.

If you’re not happy with the 1Diii, I think the 1DIV will probably fix your worries.

  • Sorry to hear that. I noticed the problem after reviewing the results of a shoot of a 3 day tournament last month – simply unacceptable number of soft frames. This from a brand new September ’08 date code 1D3 right out of the box.

It’s a shame really because the image quality is phenomenal, bar none the best images I’ve ever worked with.

  • Incremental ?? Full 1080p video, MP from 10 to 16, much higher ISO, much better LCD ? What do you want, for it to cook you dinner and sing you a lullaby ?

  • I can’t imagine how CPS members would get priority. You can’t buy through CPS, and dealers have no idea which customers are CPS members. I know B&H and Amazon are both first come, first serve. I suspect (based on the time I ordered) I’m pretty high on the list at Amazon. I’d love to see something this week, but I said that last week. Don’t try sending an email to Chuck Westfall either, he won’t reply.

  • Are you kidding me? Your kid moves around tight spaces faster than a group on the dance floor at a wedding. Gimme a break! Bash all you want. I bet you don’t even own the GD camera.

  • Already placed my order with Adorama. They said the first week of January or perhaps the second… Already paid for so it and got Express shipping FREE… Hopefully next week sometime.
    Can’t wait!

  • I pre-ordered Oct. 19th on Amazon. Still says

Delivery estimate: We need a little more time to provide you with a good estimate. We’ll notify you via e-mail as soon as we have an estimated delivery date. You can cancel at any time.

  • Well CPS told me to give my CPS membership number to the store when i place the order. Thats how they would know which customers are CPS members. Granted that means you cant place the order via the internet, just have to go the old fashioned way and call the store.

  • How about a 26MP full frame sensor with a 16MP 1.3 crop mode.

How about providing a bigger viewfinder magnification rather than always using the same magnification as the 1Ds which in 1.3 crop provides a much smaller viewfinder image.

Higher ISO. They are just numbers. Lets wait and see what is the highest usable ISO. It will fall behind the Nikon D3s.

Its upgraded features are mostly standard features of Canon’s current lineup.
    920,000 pixel LCD (Standard feature)
1080p movie mode (Standard feature. Still the same Digic IV method of not reading every line)
Higher ISO (Desperate attempt to match D3s)
More megapixels (Wow, no surprise there)

Anyway you look at it, it’s a lacklustre and pedestrian upgrade. It has been three years and this is suppose to be a flagship camera. The design team certainly were not pushed.

Lets hope the 1ds IV has something special up its sleeve.

  • if i bought one i would expect to take better pictures… but i upgraded from a 40D to a 7D thats 60% more money… and my pictures arent 60% better…. i would only expect to double my skills if i got this camera….

  • Gerald,

I did the same… ordered from Amazon October 19th (about an hour after the announcement was released) and I still have that generic message as well.

The anticipation is making it harder to sleep!

  • Just got mine today (Dec. 30th) from Canon Professional Store in Milan, Italy!!! Was the first one arrived… ;-)

  • I was at B&H yesterday and they told me that they will accept orders before they have the camera
in stock but they will need to have a confirmed shipment from Canon, which he said they don’t have. He did think it would be next week.

  • I am very early on the pre order list with deposit at Hunt’s. They are the largest dealer in New England. I sure hope it is next week!

  • Canon and Nikon did create lot of new technology in the past 3 years, you can bet without any doubt indeed!

But, don’t expect it to be delivered just as easy to customers… (always the same “business story”…)

Anyway, the 1D Mark IV seems VERY promising.

MANY people ask 1D Mark IV to have the specs and features that will come in the 1Ds Mark IV, and that’s their mistake.

  • Unfortunately, Amazon has a history of fulfilling orders slowly and randomly no matter when you ordered the camera. Welcome to Amazon hell. Well documented phenomenon on DPReview.

  • Amazon still has no idea when it’ll be available. It’s aggravating that the US is two weeks behind the rest of the world.

  • I’m told that my 1D mkIV is bing boxed up at this very moment and will next-day air to my this afternoon. So I won’t get it until Monday. :(

  • I just got a tracking number for mine from Calumet. They received them today and are shipping them out today. I’m in the US.

    Happy dance…

  • Hurray :D I pre-ordered mine Oct. 19th from Amazon ($3.99 next day air is nice, plus no 8.75% sales tax). I guess Amazon will be behind some brick and mortar stores.

  • Was just contacted by Keeble in Palo Alto, CA that my Mark IV shipped and will arrive Monday 1/4. Have a publicity shoot in the morning and the rest of the day will be spent having some fun.

  • My dealer called today and said he is receiving his shipment early next week. I have been pre ordered with deposit since October so if the cameras he ordered come I should get mine next week!! Whooo Hooooo!!!

  • Adorama got a big shipment today but the salesman couldn’t tell me if my order was going to be fulfilled today or not. He says I will be notified via email or phone…

    Can’t wait!

  • Just got my confirmation-

They will receive my 1d4 tomorrow and I will have wednesday

    F#@kin finally!

I will sell my 7D on POTN on Wednesday night

  • I was able to get my Mark IV today from Keeble. 1/4/10. They stated they were the only dealer to receive shipment in the San Francisco Bay Area today.

  • Dennis

Thanks for being a great Adorama Camera customer; email me if you ever need any after-sales support or advice: helen.osterATadoramacamera.com

  • Will some one who has received their Mk iv, and has a good working Mk iii, give their opinion of the performance of the new camera compared to the old one.

  • Just got mine today from http://TheImagingWorld.com/
Talk to Joel Weiss. Great service and REAL cameras.

I found them on eBay, since I pre-ordered from Adorama but they can’t tell when the camera will arrive… I paid $5349.00 including 2-day Fedex. An extra $300 but well worth it!
