About time someone spoke up
A CR regular has piped up about the massive announcement of new gear coming from Canon.

I'm told to expect 2 separate announcements, one for the prosumer market and one for the pro market.

Announcement 1

  • 60D Type of camera, it could be called something else.
  • The EF-S 60mm Macro will receive IS.
  • There is a “murmur” that a new 70-300 type of lens could also be announced.
  • This will be the first announcement.

Announcement 2

  • The 1Ds Mark IV will be announced
  • EF 24-70 f/2.8L IS will be announced
  • A new f/4 wide angle with IS
  • A new L prime, unknown as to which will get replaced. The 35mm isn't a guarantee.
  • A new Flash
  • New accessories
  • This will be the 2nd announcement and the big news for Photokina

The source says amendments could be made over the next few weeks, so keep checking back.

  • so what?

i don´t understand if these anouncements are coming now soon or at photokina…

  • So here it is:

The 1Ds IV and the new flash will have integrated RF. So no master flash needed on the 1Ds, but can control all other groups of flashes via menus using built in RF.

    Any takers? wishful thinking?

  • What a source! A guy could say this much and hardly break the NDA!

60D DETAILS, please! Still hoping for a full 3″ full 90 degree swing-out articulated LCD for on-the-ground macro, overhead shots, not to mention video. Now there’s a feature that would give one a reason to move up from the T2i.

  • if the 24-70 mark II is as much of an improvement as the 70-200 II, this will definitely be very interesting and good news for Canon shooters.

  • Photokina is in September, so more patience required :)

After reading those lists I think a 70-300 lens with proper ring USM would be interesting. And I wonder how wide is wide angle for the f4 (and why would it need IS)?

  • When i wrote about the 60 IS as a possibility i didn’t really tought it could be real :-)
This is a great CR2 post, but do you have the possibility to be more precise about the “60D type”?
I mean, strictly an APS-C prosumer as 40/50D or simply APS-C non professional, that could be 60D(or whatever it will be called) as well as 2000D? Great job anyway :-)

  • We in the U.S. seem to get info from Canon way after it is released in other parts of the world? Canon Europe for instance, seems to have a good handle on getting the word out quickly and sometimes, they are the only ones that have the latest info? This is especially true on new products and guides, and on how to get the most out of those products!

I’ve been communicating with Canon CPS (USA) requesting they offer comperable support to CPS members here in America, just as Canon Europe does for thier members. So far, they say that if more CPS members request it, they might be able to do more for us here in the U.S. Repair and loan service is great. However, items like the great CPN Magazine, the recent EOS-1D Mk IV, AF & CF Guide, and the multi-function CPN web site are not. If all U.S., and I would think CPS members in Canada too, would e-mail Canon USA, we might gain more info/resources that would benefit us all.

  • so there will be news at photokina.. who would have tought such a thing….

this website is more or less useless…….

  • I’m a little frustrated too with a desire for more detailed info, but want to say hey — Thanks Canon Rumors guy for your web site! You’re doing the best you can with the scoops you’re given!

  • I think Photokina is at the end of September, if not October.

24-70 with IS… I just got the non-IS version with a MK II – I did get quite a nice instore price though, and oddly enough not had an IS lense yet, so I think I can live without it.

But I can imagine that it would be great for video where IS can be much more useful than in stills.

  • As a person with a 24-70 I look forward to ver II, so that I can afford it in 5 years :)

  • Photokina will probably announce the professional level products.
The prosumer stuff will more likely be announced before the summer holiday season.

The EF-S 60mm macro would be the niche product so much was speculated about.

  • Could be. It is an old design ready for an update, and the rumour just said “wide angle”, not “prime”.

  • I feel really bad for you that you wasted all your time reading this website.

This is what makes it fun!

And yes, thank you CR guy for making it all possible!

  • it ***could*** be called something else.
I would be surprised if Canon breaks with the xxxD, xxD, xD scheme.

Maybe it will be a 55D? or 65D, or 69D, who knows.

  • My take….the 1Ds4 announcement is months away.

The 60D……I would be surprised if it announced while the current 50D rebate program is on going. So not until July 2010.

Tell me, what would you rather have a EFs60mm with IS or a 100-400 II

  • Since the 24-70 2.8 IS has been rumored for so long…maybe this time when it is announced there will be lots of stock so no waiting 6 months for the local stores to get some.

  • I hope the 24-70/2.8L IS wont be outrageously expensive (> $2000?). The ver. 1 is now $1400 USD at adorama, brand new.

  • Expect between $1800 and $2000, since IS always had a $500-600 premium over the regular version.

  • Maybe the 70-300 rumor is really the 100-400 II makeover. Now that would be a nice surprise.

  • I’d really like to hope the 60D is coming soon. I’m tired of waiting for the 7D to drop in price… Something in between the T2i and 7D would be perfect for me.

  • The 50D “rebate” is actually a price increase. At Adorama and B&H, the price WAS $930. With “rebate,” it’s now $999. True, true, true.

So the 50D price increase disguised as rebate may be intended to keep the 50D in stock without further manufacturing necessity, because the 60D is in the manufacturing stream? Who knows.

  • not sure what you expect in terms of specifications? I think you only wishing something in terms of price.

  • My guess/hopes to arrive by early fall…

    60D = 9D
    F/4 wide = 17-40 F/4 IS + new coating & less useless hood
600EX = built in RF, filter system

  • At last, some rumors that seem to make sense. Everything here seems to be inline with other rumors and pieces of information floating around.

Announcement 1 in the June to Augest Time Frame, Announcement 2 in September.

I don’t expect a new 5D Camera until there is serious competetion. hopefully, nikon or sony will provide that soon.

  • with spring/fall instant rebate, it will be “acceptable”. Or maybe they will use this lens as the kit lens for 3D/5D3? :)

  • I’m hoping Nikon really knocks it out of the park with what ever they replace the D700 with.

  • For someone like myself who’s just getting into studio/speedliting, what might this new flash incorporate that the 580/430 doesn’t have, besides the speculated RF? I have the 430ex ii right now, and am constantly learning…thinking about getting a 580ex ii, but maybe I should wait now?

  • good response to a bizarre response.

anyway, I think the 1Ds IV ought to have built-in flash-commander a la 7D, especially since it’s designed to be a studio camera.

the other future camera that really ought to receive it is the next 5-series camera

  • Not sure why my reply didn’t post…but either way. It’s not only price. There was a CR announcement on here a few weeks back that has possible specs for a 60D that would fit perfectly into the ‘better than T2i, but not quite 7D’ frame. Check it out if you haven’t seen it.

  • No one.

IS on macro is a selling point to the “prosumer” (aka rich amateur) segment

  • sounds like a shot fired back at Nikon for the 16-35 VR …

wonder how much the 17-40 price would go up for the stabilization, though.

    would you rather pay $1300 for a 17-40 f/4 L IS or $1500 for a 16-35 f/2.8 L II? I think I’d still go for the faster, wider glass

  • I’m just happy that canon is still developing prime lenses. the oldest lenses ready for updates are the relic 35mm/28mm/24mm micoro motor AF lenses. my GOD these need to be updated with USM and better build.

If its an updated L. maybe the 400 5.6L or the 300 F4L or even the 14mm? the 135 f2L and 200 2.8L are sill pretty hot lenses. maybe throw in IS to make more $$$$$$.

  • Don’t wait, Tyler. There’s a reason this site is called Canon RUMORS. If you need a new flash now, get one now. If something better comes out later, which it will, deal with it then.

  • others have pointed out in the past Canon is likely to drop a bigger flash with more power to compete directly with Nikon’s SB-900.

it would be nice to see the master/slave toggle returned to the old format as well.

what would be cooler would be a flash with a rotating head in the fashion of the Sony flashes; it’s not quite as nice as a flash bracket but it’s a lot more convenient

  • # The 1Ds Mark IV will be announced
    DETAILS!!!
    # EF 24-70 f/2.8L IS will be announced
    Sweet!
    # A new f/4 wide angle with IS
    17-40 or 14-24
    # A new L prime, unknown as to which will get replaced. The 35mm isn’t a guarantee.
    35, 50, 85, 135????
    # A new Flash
If it has built in RF, than it’s about time!!!
    # New accessories
    Wired remote for video control
    lens hood for 17tse

  • well… if canon must plug all the gaps, then…

    1d + 1ds = FF sports + FF high res
    3d = FF cheapo version of 1d
    5d = FF cheapo version of 1ds
    7d = APS-H cheapo cheapo version of the 1d
    9d = what the 7d is now
    x0d = APS-C weathersealed,
    XX0d = Consumer
    XX00d = Low end

    Lenses
    – Video lenses on EF mount for consumers featuring AUTO-ZOOM (with zoom control on camera)
    – noise cancellation on board to cancel out motorzoom noise
    – Better autofocus on video lens (make focus speed adjustable and better yet touch screen to zoom)
    – Better normal zooms and UWA

    Misc
    – bread toaster and coffee maker
    – laser powered mosquito destroyer to prevent PJs from catching some tropical disease in the field
    – GPS chip embeded within the metal frame to track it in case again some PJ gets it nicked
    – cigarette lighter attachment to hotshoe
    – OMG-HALP button which calls canon hq in the event you can figure out how to use the Autofocus settings
    – electronic brain which takes pictures automatically when it ‘sees’ an interesting scene so we can just wave it around like mad people until it goes ‘snap’ and viola! a pulitzer is taken :)

  • cr0 nonesense
cr1 a source that sometimes gets thing right.
cr2 a known source that is most of the time correct.
    cr3 done deal.

  • Sorry, whilst September is not a bad month for RF, the worlds nonstandard frequency allocation is. The 1Ds MkIV does not have RF Speedlite control.

  • nope. the 35L is just fine. I just personally find that the 45mm focal length has a more appealing perspective than the 50L. its not too wide but wide enough for me.

just wishful thinking haha, dont mind me.

  • A few months back there was a CR rumor saying that the whole f/2.8 L zoom lens line will become: 12/14-24/2.8, 24-70/2.8 IS and 70-200/2.8 L IS II.

In this case, Canon will have 17-40L II and 14-24/2.8L, and possibly keep the 16-35/2.8L II. Sounds quite redundant to me.

  • It’s an increase at those two high-volume discounters, but at the thousands of brick and mortar stores around the country including every single Best Buy, it’s a real sale where it’s $100 cheaper than it was before the rebate.

  • Except for the 18-55mm IS which is priced only a few tens of dollars above the non-IS version.

  • Well for one, Canon could bring back a potato-masher style flash like the old 480EG. Look at any red carpet line and you will see many home-made brackets keeping the flash in the position that the 480EG is naturally at. Plus it could have higher power not having to balance on top of the hotshoe.

  • 60D? …as a Rebel user looking to upgrade I am somwhat interested, but it doesnt make sense at this time.

The 7D is still new enough to be the king of the crop sensor and is only a few hundred dollars more than they are likely to ask for a 60D.

The T2i is 90% of what a 60D would be and is still so new that it is hard to find in stock.

It is more likely that the next crop sensor announced will be a true entry level as the T2i left lots of room below it for something else.

I do hope fore new lenses though.

    EFS 50-150 2.8 IS …prefered.

100-400 IS II …or better yet a quality EFS 100-450 IS could be good too!

  • I think these rumors about 60Ds and stuff is just getting a bit out of hand…come on…we’re not a bunch of kindigarten kids.

  • 100-400!

i just bought the 100 L IS, you’re right, macro-wise the IS doesn’t help much (unless handheld). but i bought the 100 IS for portraiture (kinda like an IS 100 f2).

i’ve held off buying a super telephoto and UWA in anticipation of these announcements. UWA IS and new 100-400 … or even a new 70-300 (with better USM)

  • The idea that Canon would finally have an answer to radio triggers, pocket wizards, radio poppers, etc, with ettl support is such a great idea, that it is obvious Canon would blow it, and have know idea what you are talking about.

  • Well Nikon just did a 16-35 f/4 VR so a Canon 14-24 f/4 IS would be interesting. (for those who don’t know VR is Nikon’s version of IS)

  • they can always spring us a surprise.
i mean no one really expected the 550d to come so early
or the 1d2n to appear in mid cycle
or the 7d to have 18mp…

there still really is a gap between the 550d and the 7d to be economically exploited espcially if you take into account the body of people wanting to upgrade but cant afford the 7d, and dont want the 550d. at most recycle the 50d body/mirror box/af sensor/viewfinder assembly etc but give a new sensor, better metering and lcd overlays

if you dont tap into these people its your loss. profits come in either way should it eat somewhat into the sales of the 7d. afterall its better to lock your users into your system and suck them dry through overpriced lenses then let these people give up and go d90

  • I need your guys opinion on the matter. Ive been waiting to pull the trigger on the 50D because of these rumors. I know as soon as I buy the 50D, they’ll announce a 60D or 9D and the 50D will drop in price.

I can’t wait past mid May because I’m going on an southeast Asia vacation end of May. So what would you guys do? Hold out some more or just suck it up and make the plunge now?

    Help!

  • Seriously, just get a T2i or a 7d. Don’t mess w/ 50d. 60d won’t be announced until Rebate program ends in June (or later). Or get a T1i (15mp). Better IQ than 50d according to some credible reviewers. The T2i really is the best “value” at the moment though.

  • You are spot on in your analysis. I’ve owned both T1i and T2i. They are great but the size and build really are inferior to what you can get in a D90 at $1100. D90 is far superior camera EXCEPT for video quality. Go to the electronics store and hold a D90 and a T2i, you’ll “get it” instantly. Canon really needs to get something competitive in this slot before D90 successor comes out. Most people can’t justify going up to $1700 (body only) for 7d over a T2i at $800. However, we will pay $300-400 more for better build quality.

  • haha are you still using them now (the canons) makes me wonder why do you stick with them. anything you like abt the canons?

agreed. the d90 feels great. light enough, nice viewfinder. i like the button layout. but being a cheapskate i cant bear to sell my, gasp, 3 canon lenses and my 400d. waiting for something good to come up….come on canon…

  • If you’re willing to do some camera juggling, you could get a used body (most depreciation having been deducted already) and upgrade later.

Or maybe go more downscale to a new XS or XSi. Who knows, you may end up thinking they’re enough camera for you.

  • I was waiting on the 60D for a while as well. I wanted more than the T1i/T2i. I wanted less than the 7D offered. Basically I wanted a 50D with video (I have a 9 month old and wanted stills and video all in 1) and hoped to get a few 7d goodies like the AF and LCD screen for a price in the middle.

In the end I realized I was missing too many pictures and my daughter wouldn’t stop growing while I made up my mind.

So I sucked it up and bought the 7D. Will I use the flash controller…probably not. But there wasn’t anything that I though was missing and really wanted…no.

The camera’s awesome. No buyers regret at all. It’ll just take a little longer to get 24-105 f4 L, the 430 flash and a few other goodies. Until then the cheapie 50 1.8 & a 17-50 f2.8 will do.

I’ve been to south east asia… Vietnam, Hng Kong, Singapore and Thailand. I wish I had the 7D back then. But the counties are so nice, then made my P&S look good.

  • forgot…if you hold out for then next best new thing… you’ll hold out forever and never even get started

  • how abt you rent/borrow a dslr and tide this period over. i would do that if i were you… after all, seriously, the camera does not matter so much if its a vacation. your sill smatter more. just dont dunk it in water. its the dry season in SEA in may-july so shouldnt get so much rain. the d90 is pretty old as well and might be replaced soon. it sucks to be a buyer in this segment of the market now. just borrow/rent and wait

  • 7D is well worth the extra cash. It has HD video, great auto focus, great sensor, weather sealing, etc etc.

    Go 7D, or go 5D

  • +1

Just buy a used model off your local craigslist ad or ebay, sell it around the confirmed press release time of the newer model, and then buy the newer model when it comes out! BAM next to nothing lost in $ compared to buying a new camera and suffering the dramatic depreciation of it used and a newer model out!

  • thanks for the replies guys. Renting in theory sounds like a great idea, but after you give it back, you have nothing to show for your money. Plus the amount of money i spend on renting a 50D i could just spend on buying the 7D now. I’m in the boat of wanting more than the T2i but less than the 7D. I want to invest wisely in a camera body that will be used for many years to come.

  • oops… I digressed… I guess being surrounded by more canon gear than people makes my mind wander… :-p

  • Canon make a wireless grip.

They could easily use the same frequency to do the flash sync in any country.

    They just choose not to.

  • If you are happy with a crop body then just get the 7D.

It’s a heaps better camera for not a lot more extra money.

After a couple of weeks you will forget what you paid for it anyway.

  • The 16-35 is an awesome lens though. Great for making your friends look like aliens.

  • While it’s true that most macro stuff is done on a tripod. There are times you want IS on a macro lens (while doing macro). It does help a little and for those (rare) times it can mean the difference between a shot in focus and a lost shot. Oh and as ffs said, it’s really aimed at people who perhaps aren’t so gung-ho about it (or risk losing a pay cheque). That said a lot of “prosumers” are better than so called “professionals” so no need for anyone to get on their “high horse” about “it”. ;)

BTW for handheld portrait stuff and other uses the IS on the 100L is A.W.E.S.O.M.E.

  • William Massey you selfish jerk ;p

J/K I know how you feel, but I’m waiting for the 35L II to come out (not that I can afford it yet, I’m just making excuses. ;)

  • Nikon have run out of stuff they can put in a Camera. They did too much too soon and burnt out like Icarus.

    LOL

  • 5mm really make all that much difference? Not that long it doesn’t.

Not worth putting a prime in there.

  • Sorta right, but not quite
CR1 = New source (probably nonsense)
CR2 = Known source that gets it right some of the time (not most of the time)
CR3 = Known source that gets it right most of the time (basically done deal, yeah).

  • Except that the 18-55 is not an “L” class lens. Most, if not all L class lenses have a $500-600 premium.

  • Exactly what “more” over the T2i did you want? Concretely, as in stuff you’d actually use, as opposed to a marketing checklist. A Rebel is more than adequate for a vacation, especially if are carrying the camera more often than shooting it. Or are you planning to take pictures while standing in a monsoon?

To me, your question implies that you are a new or casual user, for whom I think a 7D would be overkill. Is a 7D nicer? Of course. Is it necessary? I doubt it. A T2i will give 99+% of the image quality (same sensor) and you can apply the price difference toward some glass instead, which is more important than your body choice anyway.

Maybe you own a closet full of L glass and I’m guessing all wrong. If so, I apologize. But I’d also think you’d not ask this 7D vs. T2i question if you did.

  • This so-called “CR regular” seems to have just complied all the less-sillier rumors of the past few months and put it out as new. I’ve read all these before, nothing new here. Of course Canon would some stuff before Photokina, that’s not new either.

  • As much as I’m a fan of the D90, I still like Canon better and don’t plan on changing. Canon is easier to use, produces great pictures and has great construction in the xxD and xD lines. They just have a huge whole in their lineup right now that I want them to fill. It appears a whole lot of people would buy a “60d” right away. I know I would.

  • T2i is best camera for travel. The smaller size is easier to deal with on a vacation. HOWEVER, you will want the 7d when you get home. Gee, I wonder how I would know this?.?.? For me, it comes down to the tactile feel of the 7d versus the Rebel. The Rebel really doesn’t feel good in my hands. Also, it is nose heavy when I put a moderate lens on like EF-S 15-85. I even tried the battery grip. The grip really does make it much better but not as good as 7d. Try that out before ruling out T2i.

I do like some of the ideas about buying a used one for now though. Maybe a used Rebel or even 40d. Many serious photographers still shoot 30d and 40d today with great results. This could later be resold or used as a backup / beater.

  • I agree wide angle f/4 with IS is probably a replacement for the 17-40L. The question is will it keep the same zoom range or will it become a 17-50 or a 15-40 or something else?

  • @”Expect between $1800 and $2000, since IS always had a $500-600 premium over the regular version.”

I see no mention of L lenses in that absolute statement.

The bottom line is that if a four-stop IS can be added to the 18-55mm for a few tens of dollars, then charging $500-600 for it on other lenses only serves to pad the profit and make ignorant people think you are getting a bargain. I’ll bet you buy only Monster Cable for your USB transfers as well so your files transfer cleaner and have less digital noise in them. LOL!

  • “The T2i is 90% of what a 60D would be and is still so new that it is hard to find in stock.”

Yea and the 500D is 90% of what the 550D is.
    ….
And it is hard to find in stock?! Where do you live?^^

  • As much as I need and want the 60D, I am pretty sure it will be some 2000D or so..
They don’t really have any product in this range now. For the 60D there is the 7D (and yes I know for many, me included, this is not an option but still) but if ppl. want a real entry level thing there just isn’t anything.
Or do they still produce the 450D?

  • I’d rather see it get made into a 135 1.8 and get properly sealed then see IS on it… The CZ sony mount 135…

my ideal line up = 17mm TSE, 24-70 2.8 IS (don’t care about the is… but the current one is awfully soft, full of CA and especially poor focused at or near minimum) 85mm 1.2 and a 135 1.8…

So now all I need to do is sell all my semi non essential organs on the black market…

  • Take advantageo of the 550D rebate, or the 50D rebate now, maybe 2 weeks delivery before your trip anyway. Do you need/want to try video – if yes forget the 50D.

60d/9d may not be anounced for weeks/months/ever and then will still have delivery delays. If you need a new camera before your trip you need time to get to know it and get spare batteries etc.

Me, I want a mirrorless 9D(60D) as i want an upgrade from my 400D, the 550D ‘almost’ works for me in ISO and Video upgrade features.

  • I’m not sure what level your at as a photographer so it’s hard to pin exactly what your needs are now and where they will be in years to come.

If your the kind of person that likes to get something… and then just not worry about the next thing for a long time… I’d really push you in the direction of a 7D, really, the only reason you’ll need/want more is if you decide you prefer full frame.

If your not sure your gonna stick with it, or don’t mind the slower working pace or poorer construction, don’t miss having a second dial, or want something lighter, get a 550D. It really is good bang for your buck IQ wise, although the handling really isn’t a trade off I’d ever make personally.

personally, if it was just for a stills camera I’d pick up a second hand 40D before a 550D (yes I’ll take handling over high iso performance)… Only thing you might want to do, if you haven’t tried it already, have a look at a FF body from any brand and compare smiler shooting conditions on a crop and see if you prefer or can even see the different rendering properties of either format, if nothing about FF does it for you I think you can safely say a 7D would be all you need for a long time.

  • This just in.

September will be in September this year!

Also, the 1DsIV will have a direct print button!

    FOR SURE

CR3 take it to the bank!

  • the 550d low iso output smokes the 90d.

“build quality”? anybody ever broken a rebel in a way that wouldn’t have broken a 50d? either way, they will both be in the landfill in 7 years. maybe the 50d will take 1000 years to break down while the rebel will take only 900.

maybe you look cool, but the picture output between the 550d and 7d looks the same.

  • the extra level of iso is remarkable and worth the 10%! (personally i don’t use the video.)

  • i was amazed at the t2i and that canon allowed this camera to get made. the dpreview’s test results show it even has slightly greater dynamic range than the 7d.

if you’re getting paid to shoot action, then you need the autofocus options of the 7d.

otherwise, either way, both of these cameras are going to be worth about $200-300 in 5-8 years. i say get the t2i and spend the extra $1000 on a nice lens (which will make more of a difference in your output – and still be worth nearly $1000 in 5-8 years.)

  • Lol seriously, yes lenses keep their value for a longer time than bodys but 5-8 years without decreasing value^^? sure…

  • Let there be mercy on us. May the “60D” be a 7D with a ~12/14 Mp sensor? Then they can use that sensor also on the “2000D”.

  • RE: “The source *says* amendments could be made over the next few weeks, so keep checking back.”

The source *means* that they’re making all this up, and because of that they may hit the mark (or Mark II, as the case may be), or miss the mark entirely.

IIRC, the EF 24-70 f/2.8L IS was ‘confirmed’ here on CR…in February, 2009.

  • I am hoping for a 60D, and I think it will be out around this August/September. (That’s 3 years after the 40D and 2 after the 50D)- Back to 18 month cycle, as maybe Canon wants to go back to 3 years with 3 xoD’s?

  • That one is long overdue. I guess it is not considered important, as most people use the 300 f/4 + 1.4x TC.
That makes it an ideal playground for new technology.
Canon has recently filed patents on better DO technology for superteles. Maybe the 400 f/4 DO get updated?

  • Yes I agree. All Nikon will have in the future is one crop body and one FF. Then they’ll go out of business because no one will ever by a Nikon camera again (because they don’t need to).

Shame it only lasted a couple of years, but that’s what you get for being dumb.

  • Yes, that would totally make me look like a professional. Then people will pay me to take bad photos for them.

    AWESOME!

    High-fives all ’round!

  • No, the copper wire I ripped out of the wall of my apartment when this totally uncool landlord kicked me out… is the L.

  • I’m looking forward to the f/4 wide angle with IS. The image quality needs to be better than the current 17-40 :)

  • 15-40mm? 15mm gives 24mm true on APS-C and the last couple EF-S lens updates expanded from 17mm to 15mm. Could be a trend. It would make it a fantastic lens for a 60d or for a 1Ds Mark IV.

  • Canon will release a special Pokemon lens, that will help you catch ’em all.

    Seriously!

Actually I’m not quite right about using it in any country:

    · The WFT-E2/E2A/E3/E3A/E4/E4A can be used only in the following areas.
Japan, France, Italy, Germany, United Kingdom, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Ireland, Denmark, Greece, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Liechtenstein, Finland, Sweden, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Cyprus, Malta, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, China, Singapore, Bulgaria and Romania.
    · The WFT-E2/E2A/E3/E3A/E4/E4A can be used in the United States and Canada, in addition to the previous areas.
For information on other areas where the transmitter can be used, contact the Canon Customer Service Center.
    · In France, using the transmitter outdoors is prohibited.
    · In Italy, use outside of one’s own premises requires general authorization.
    · In Latvia, use outside of one’s own premises requires an individual radio license.

  • yea i know it isnt ff. this is a silly compilation of wish lists i get everywhere haha :]

  • I use the 100L as a close focus general purpose lens.

The IS is great and works very well.

The amazing thing is that with the IS you CAN take a macro shot hand held.

  • The 1Ds MkIII doesn’t so why should the MkIV?

  • I must be better than you. I started saving 5 years ago to be able to afford a 24-70mm II when it is released.. :P

  • I really do not need an IS on a 17-40mm F4. But I would like to see a canon 12-24mm F4. It would be a great lens. :)

  • I cannot afford a 1ds mark IV right now and i do believe that the 5d mark II works just fine for me.

But I would really love to have a 24-70mm IS. I would buy that no matter how much it costs!

    The 60d ? not interested.

    a new 17-40mm? not interested.

a new 70-300 ? if it was smaller than the current offering then maybe.

a new 100-400mm? If it was sharp at 400mm & got a constant F4 speed then yes. :P

an EVIL canon? yes please. :) I’ve been tempted to buy an olympus but so far I’m holding back in hopes that canon will release one.

  • my bad thats photoforum… could we possibly see the release in Moscow at the PHOTOFORUM

  • Yeah, especially when freewares can distort your picture the same way. Very expensive just to make your friend look like aliens…This leave some questions…
The 16-35 II f2.8L is just good (in the angles) at f8-f11 for serious landscape work…like a lot of other lenses from Canon. If any of the WA zooms from Canon don’t get updates this year to achieve decent performance for landscape…I think I will buy the 14-24 from nikon and go Manual with adaptor. The 16-35 II is too recent…17-40 is mature for update, even if I would value any updates for WA primes such as 20mm f2.8 (favorite for WA sequence shooting with 5D2, especially from vehicles). roughly 50% of the Canon catalog is from 90s…(nearly all the non-L primes…and quite a few others). Time to udpate Canon !

  • A 100-400mm F4 that’s sharp at 400mm at f4 would be stunning. But please get rid of the push-pull design.

Also I love the idea of 24-70 IS 2.8 – I just wish it could be a tad longer – say 100mm, then I could happily get rid of my 24-105 F4 IS.

  • 2000$ ++ for sure, more 2299 likely, fancy glass cost a lot (Fluorite, UD, Nanospectra coating…)

No update is relevent without adressing several issues such as the mechanical design (to weak and prone to disalignment with time passing), and pure optical performance.

For the 32Mp 1ds4 and what would follow 2011-2012, you need updated lenses with all the fancy UD, Super UD, Fluorite lense Canon can come up with. (and I think 32Mp is a minimum, such a MP count would mean 37037 pixel / mm2, and the 550D /7D account for 54172 pixel / mm2 there is still room for 1dsMark 5).

What’s good is that Canon will be forced to update non L lense to achieve “acceptable” results, and this mean more fancy ED / aspherical glass in non L lenses.

BTW, this lay the perfect background for a low MP FF body…no?What about a 15-18MP max FF a la leica?

  • You can all complain, but that’s the definition of “long term investment”…and some people value that.

Since they came out, and if you exclude video…D300s / D700 / D3X / D3s all outperform their Canon equivalent, not even mentioning the D90 who is still the better APS-C camera with the D300s…just the colors are strange sometime.
Ok the prices of the lenses are expensive, but with the recent and excellent 16-35 F4, Nikon is winning more and more market share. Why do you think Canon hastily issued their 1d4? the D3 / D3s are so much better (no speaking of the High Iso capability). 1d4 is a fantastic camera take alone…but a D3s is more versatile.

The only segment where Canon is doing very well is the entry-level segment. The 550d is a very compelling camera.

Ok Nikon is dumb for strategy, but they do make amazing camera and, except for entry level, they have the best cameras in town (and are building the best lense lineup…expensive though)

My 5D mark II is a fantastic camera for my need, but had i not been involved in serious landscape photography AND clips/Ad shooting, I would have choosen D700 for my main body.

  • The canon 16-35mm II is soft at 16mm which is supposedly the whole point for owning an ultra wide angle lens like that in itself for landscapes. UWA primes you forgot about are the 17mm and 24mm ts-e which are superb for arch/landscapes.

    UWA primes = Canon
    UWA zooms = Nikon

  • Yup It makes sense…except that 7d is and will remain APS-C…I am wondering if 9d couldn’t be a rangefinder / small body with FF. Having to shoot during concert is a pain if you don’t have silent shutter available on your camera body. I recently borrowed a Leica M9, and the few shots I made just made me realized this was the perfect camera for demanding environnment (the shutter is very very quiet).

More seriously, I think Canon is currently exploring the EVIL possibility…some pros will appreciate not having to frighten everybody when using L Lenses and a pro body, when taking pictures.

3D and 9D will be products, the branding power is quite good, and we all know the power of the Marketing department in Canon…

  • I would’nt be surprised if Canon was working on a video oriented EF lense, with special mechanics to ensure continuous and smooth AF / Aperture ala Panasonic 14-140 (less wide of course). This is a must to complement the rumors of a EF-mount pro Camcorder…This would be a killing success for all the entry level buyers, who are disapointed having to Manual focus for HD video recording. (And oh yeah, me shooting my video of course!)

  • Nikon’s constant f4 200-400 is 6k.
    Canon’s 100-400 is 1.6k.

If keeping the longer end at 5.6 will save 2-4 grand I’m all for it. Just improve the sharpness at 400mm and (if possible) faster compareable AF like the prime 400 5.6 and we got a winner. While keeping it below 2.5k.

I dont care too much for IS on this lens even though they could improve upon a couple stops on it. Nor does the push pull bother me too much (though is it possible to have a push pull design that is weather sealed?), but if they got rid of it I wouldn’t mind either.

I would agree if they could bump it up to 500mm that would be awesome. Either a 70-400 like the Sony or like a 150-500 like the Sigma would be nice focal lengths for the replacement of the 100-400.

  • I agree. The 3D will be the 5D mk iii. When you read the wishlists for the 3D that’s what it amounts to.

  • Yes you are right, both of them are really good, which tells me Canon made some progress recently.

Sorry but the 16-35 II L is soft at every focal in the angles…

    these are mild examples :
    http://www.16-9.net/lens_tests/nikon_14_24mm_1/nikon14_24mm_b.html

    http://www.16-9.net/lens_tests/canon14l2_nikon1424/nikon1424_canon14l2_a.html

    http://www.16-9.net/lens_tests/nikon1424_17mm/nikon1424_17mm1.html

the comparison with 24 f1.4L from Canon is a shame…for Canon.

The more I write about this, the more I pray for a long waited good 17-40 f4, IS could be a welcome update, but I really expect some redesign glass

  • To call it 9D would make sense if the consumer end of their DSLR would become mirrorless.

    That would make it:
    1D/1Ds pro sports/studio DSLR
    5D/7D semi-pro studio/sports DSLR
    9D amateur DSLR

10X (or whatever name they’d come up with) amateur mirrorless (à la Panasonic GH1)
    100X compact mirrorless (à la panasonic GF1)
    1000X entry-level mirrorless (à la Olympus EPL1)

  • It’s got to be fast – f2 would work – the 135 f2 is very manageable – maybe a 82mm thread.

Don’t mess with the dream :)

  • I’ve seen on ebay old lens model with the lens code of like K of the 180mm macro being sold used in good condition for nearly 100-200 under new.

  • 12mm wouldn’t be that great – I can see that being an engineering nightmare with mediocre results. 14-24mm would be conceivable, though!

In any case, this new wide-angle F/4 lens… regardless of focal length, I will purchase it. Been looking for a while and if there is one on the horizon, I’ll wait for that.

  • Unfortunately that’s the wrong kind of wireless. The WFT grips are for wifi (wireless internet) standards. While the newest versions support wireless multi-camera synced firing (E2 II, E4 II, E5), they do not do this instantaneously and this technology cannot be used for flash syncing in its current implementation.

    Wishful thinking, unfortunately.

  • If I were a camera maker and I had a line of cameras whose names end with D I would reserve “3D” for a 3-D camera. I would also avoid using the name “3D” so as to not give the impression that I make a 3-D camera.

Photographer: “I just got the new Canon 3D!”
Layman: “Oh, wow. A 3-D camera!?”
    P: “Well, no. It’s just a name…”
L: “Oh. What a dumb name. Makes it seem like it’s a 3-D camera.”

  • Don’t say no matter how much it costs!

    They might hear you…

Seriously though. I think under $2000 is fair. Over is too high. The 70-200 was too high at $2500. I think $2300 would have been, will probably be in the future fair for the 70-200 revamp.$1800 would be fair for a 24-70. But I fear the worst for the 24-70 revamp.

  • 24-70 IS on the long end will stay in my opinion. It aligns with the 70-200. Now a little wider could be possible. 22-70 IS would be pretty sweet.

On the other hand, a 24-70 f/2.0 IS or even f/2.4 would essentially be a disruptive product. It would change the way people think about using primes and zooms.

  • disruptive.. now dont tell them that. sheesh. some of you really do want canon to be asses to you ;)

  • exactly, canon are in the business to satisfy at the moment. unless incremental is your thing and you dont mind waiting on products that wont eventuate in the next year.

  • gotta love getting jabbed up the butt with that.. ;)

makes you wish you had in- body IS sometimes :P

  • true IS or not, but Canon may make an IS one to compete with Nikon’s. Canon has a 16-35mm which is quite new so I don’t know about getting a 14-24 anytime soon . It will be welcomed though :)

  • So far, Canon’s new product launches have been “ho-hum”, not much to get excited about. When is Canon going to integrate bluetooth to its cameras so we can use remote devices such as i-Pods with OnOne software as remote triggers/monitors? How about including ND filters (and others) in software, controlled through live-view? or selective focus (like the ‘miniature’ feature Nikon offers)? I can see paying for these features more, but additional mega-pixels and slightly better L lens quality does not motivate me to dish out the extra bucks.

  • Nope.

    Ever hear of Elinchrom Skyports?

This is exactly the frequency that they use.

Canon could easily do this if they wanted to, they just choose not to.

  • Maybe the new L Prime is a 85 f/1.4 L IS. Nikon rumors is reporting a rumors about a Nikon f/85 1.4 VR.

I’d buy that in a second if it had AF speed like the 85 1.8 and was at least as sharp wide open as is the 85 f/1.2 L stopped down to f/2.0.

  • I think its going to be a long time for an articulated screen to appear on a so-called semi professional body like the 60D. But I might be wrong… its all marketing really haha if there is enough demand Canon could make anything lol.

  • You are right, I should say: I will buy that no matter how much it costs as long as it doesn’t cost more than $1999! X)

  • nooo than all my waiting was for nothing!

may the 60D be a 7D with DIGIC 5 and the AF doesn’t need to be that good.

  • See the D3000 features on Nikon’s web page. This effect simulates tilt-shift out-of-focus planes, giving pictures a “miniature” appearance. Yes, you can achieve this with a TS lens, but paying $$$, and only for selected focal lengths. Although what Nikon offers is for applying the effect after a shot is made, I would like to see this applied in real time, which can be handy for video. See the “bathtub” series of videos ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkrtYRxGyuo ) by director Keith Loutit shot with TS lens.

Additional features I would like to see in software: ability to limit the range of ISO, TV or AV. For example, say you want to shoot on AV mode and not have to worry about TV or ISO (set to AUTO), BUT, you want to limit their acceptable ranges, say TV to a minimum of 1/125 and ISO to a maximum of 400. You can’t do this now. This should be easy to add via firmware.

  • Would be awesome if the new f/4L IS lens was 17-105mm f/4L IS… Is that focal length possible with a constant f/4?

  • what’s the point of hopping for a camera with the same things the t2i has…. buy a T2i and don’t wait for the 60D

  • doesnt sound to be true: too many unknowns (like: new f/4 wide angle with IS, new L prime… ) suggesting daydreams of a funboy rather than real inside info.

  • me too… the only reason why I skipped the mkII is because of its old AF design…

  • the 85 1.4 of Nikon will get an update (according to T.H.).

Why is there no 85 1.4 in canon anyway? 50mm lens have it, so why not make it possible for 85mm?

85 1.2 is too expensive, so a 1.4 might be attractive to canon users specially now that sigma had announced its version of 85 1.4.

  • I for one would like to see a nice L prime around 18 – something to split the difference between the crazy wide 14 and the not really wide 24

  • i said this a little above but I totally agree that a 20 L or even better an 18 L in the f2 range would be mroe than welcome – the 18 i’d be happy even at 2.8

  • single digit is “pro” camera – it won’t be that – the 2 digit numbers make sense

    1000 – entry

    550 – entry but better

    50 – “pro sumer)

    7,5,1 entry pro to pro

  • and still more than those two “high volume discounters” that together don’t order as much stock as bestbuy – you make it sound like each best buy store is ordering alone… BB is a rip off

  • i for one wish that the lens wasn’t a 24-70 at all but rather a 24-85 or better yet a 20-70. I wish they would give me something new…

the old standard was 35-70 then 28-70 then 24-70 = give me something new

  • Perhaps you may ask Nikon users if they have Parkinson’s. Nikon just offered the 16-35 VR recently…

  • CR, any new info on this? Very interested in the 60D and hoping to heard something this month. Any chance?

  • hmmm, looks a lot like the new 1Ds will come in the second half of this year. This could mean dual digic 5 and the end of the 1D series. One body that does it all, studio and sports.
