I have yet to handle a production 5D Mark II (boo), so I have no first hand knowledge of the issue. What about the ones of you that have?

  • I looked and could see nothing that looked amiss in the 50 some pictures I’ve taken so far. I will say that I looked at the examples posted on the net, and it’s hard to figure out what they’re seeing. Highlights look fine.

The camera is a real pleasure to use (a vast improvement), and the pictures look great, esp. compared to my old 20D.

  • Seriously I’m in Montreal and our biggest store (Lozeau) is just clueless when we call them. I was hoping for a “it’s Friday look we have them surprise” but Friday came and went without any calls.

  • 3 missing options :
    – “my 5D mkII was not shipped yet”
    – “i canceled my order”
    – “i have planned to wait for Canon 3D.”

  • I’ve been shooting with my 5DII for a week now with great success. Superb camera. Huge files. Easily competes with my digital back. I do hope Canon fixes whatever issue people are having but I also hope people don’t blow it out of proportion.

  • Had a look at a shot I took of the sunset the other night an it looks fine to me *phew* all the house and street lights in the shot look fine and the glow of light surrounding them is consistent all the way around.

Having said that I will be keeping an eye out for it. Hopefully it only effects a small number of cameras and is fixable! Interesting to see comments people have noticed it on the 1Ds mk3 as well. I have never heard of this complaint until last night, nor did I notice it during my short period of use of a 1Ds3 a couple of months ago.

  • Picked up a 5D Mark II today in Kuala Lumpur. I was told only 30 in all of Malaysia. I bought the third and last one the shop had. Sold out in less than 24 hours.

I had heard about the black dots but I bought anyway. Definitely can see them, but really, they are so small. You can barely see them at 100% and to be sure you have to use at least 200% or 300%. A quick photo of Christmas lights in the mall; not a complete test by any means, but I am pretty sure there will be some on the net before long. My intepretation of the problem is that a quick fix will be likely from Canon for the RAW files at least. A hardware fix may be longer in coming.

I got my auto-iso and I got my RAW in idiot mode (for when my wife takes my picture – ahem). I am a happy camper.

    The IQ is outstanding.

  • If you haven’t seen the issue, it’s likely because you have not hit the exposure required for it to show up.

I just tested with 10x magnified LiveView, and it’s visible there within a certain exposure range, with a part of that range making it quite obvious.

It looks like a design flaw that affects all copies.

  • Update on black Pixels based on night testing with 70-200f4L:

    – very small black pixels. Unlikely to be seen in anything other than very large prints. I did not let it stop me from buying the camera. CA is bigger problem with all but the best of lenses. In any event the black pixels are so repeatable that I am certain a fix will be available before long.

    – I have not observed at 50 or 100 ISO.

    – Seems to get worse with increasing ISO.

    – Happens when you have saturated pixels followed by low light pixels left to right in landscape view. The black pixels are always to the right of bright light. This has lead people to think this is a sensor read problem.

    – it seems to be worse at f4 than f8, but you can still see it.

In practical terms you will see this problem when you have a small bright light on a dark background. The worst I’ve seen are bright blue Christmas style lights against a dark background.

Now, what about that purple fringing…..

  • My shop is only getting 5 bodies at a time. By that rate I won’t have one until mid Jan : (

  • 1 last option

I will be ordering the 1ds Mk 4 which should reach my shop before the shipment of Canon 5d Mk2s that would have fulfilled my order.

  • A disappointing post. It seems that Amazon mistakening sent out the Body Only to the kit pre-orders. So that means that the people who ordered kits are getting only bodies and the body people are pushed back until perhaps January for people who ordered on the first two days. The other problem maybe people who return opened “Body Only” boxes and Amazon may ship those out. Anyway, I was one of the fools who ordered from Amazon. I guess I learned my lesson.

  • Drfl,

Sorry to here about Amazon. Try to give Profeel.com a call. They are very helpful in informing you when you might expect your product. I have canceled all my pre-orders and worked with Profeel. My order was placed on Wed, November 26 with Profeel. They called me to confirm my order and told me when to expect my tracking number. I receive my tracking number on Friday Dec. 5th. 5Dmk2 (body) will arrive this week. I did a check on the company via BBB, Reseller-rating, eOpinion, and consumer report which all had positive feedback. The only catch here is a deposit down. I actually paid-in-full to prevent any further delay. This is a local dealer in New York and it beat out (in my opinion) B&H (which I can’t even place an order), Adorama (list #923), OneCall (list #56), and Calumet (list #100+). Sorry I never buy from a product of this type from a non-photography retailer. Especially Amazon who uses 3rd Party retailers. Too many hands in the transaction results to an increase in transaction problems.

Best of luck. So you will have your 5Dmk2!

  • Yeah, I think the poll is also missing a “can’t be bothered to check cause I don’t care if my 5dmk2 has black spots” option :^D

  • Why do I get the feeling this black dot issue is going to be just like the autofocus ruckus with the 1D? Canon will deny there’s a problem, like no one else can see the big elephant standing in the room with them…
Here’s to hoping it’s a simple firmware fix, as a recall to address this issue would be a disaster!

  • bummer, my copy of the 5D Mark II has the black plague, too.

It is most noticeable in this image when viewed 1:1. One characteristic of the problem is that the dots appear always to the right of the highlight (unless shot vertical), strange. You can see it in this image if you view the full-size shot:

I also checked files from my 20D and don’t see the same behavior so from my perspective this is a new feature.
