….Probably not
Adorama has listed the lens as being discontinued.
View here: http://www.adorama.com/catalog.tpl?op=detailsdisc&sku=CA70200ISU
This is probably a typo, but news has been slow lately… so anything is welcomed!

thanks vizzini

The sky is falling?
How about the other retailers who don’t list it as discontinued? Is Adorama > ALL?
Yes
Adorama has shown this now for at least a month. I just bought a 70-200 2.8L IS and this is the same message Adorama listed early June… By the way, my lens was built in January 2009 according to the date code, so Canon probably has a lot to clear out even if this was true…
Well, Nikon recently discontinued their 70-200 2.8 stabilized lens… Maybe there’s some kind of technological breakthrough on the horizon!
I have a *brand* *new* copy of this lens. I wondered why it was such a deal (including Canon’s $200 instant rebate). I’m thinking seriously about returning it…
This had more to do with the economic downturn than new developments.
As much as I want it to be an update of the lens with lower weight, the same build, and the ~5-stop IS from the 200/2, I think it’s far likelier that the 70-200/2.8 IS is simply between production runs similar to the way in which the 35/1.4 was impossible to find and is now ubiquitous. Even simpler would be an error on Adorama’s part, which is not only the likeliest explanation but also the one that renders this whole train of thought (and, indeed, the thread) moot.
Nikon only discontinued the White Version of the lens.
It could use an update. YAY if it’s true and they don’t jack the price up another $500!
My guess is a sharper verion with an updated IS as Canon just updated the IS on their top consumer camcorders (HF S11) for things like walking/running.
The big question everyone wants to know though is how many direct print buttons will it have?
B&H Raised their price $100.00 to $1899 and it is in stock.
I just purchased at $1799 – $200 rebate locally.
BTW, Mine has a loud clicking when engaging the IS. I did a few searches and it sounds like that is normal, but it is quite a bit more noticeable than on my 24-105.
Anyone else experience this?
Thanks.
So… when was the current gen of this lens introduced? How does the gap in time between its introduction and today compare with Canon’s typical update time in this product range?
EF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM was introduced August 2001 with no direct print buttons!
Moar direct print
Four or five. Personally, I need nine.
lol that cracked me up!
Lenses and camera bodies usually get backordered when the production lines are used for other things (like a new camera or lens model). which means that we are getting the 1d mark IV or the 24-70 f2.8 soon (wishes).
If a new 70-200 would of been introduced the current one will live with it with a lower price. this is what canon has always done. Some people prefer the prooved old rathar than risking it with a new lens with unknown potiential.
Now I know what will my next purchase will be, not lens that’s for sure
well one finger needs to be on the shutter button so that makes sense!
..a direct print button?
A USB Direct Print Button Adapter? Good choice!
You need a TS-E lens to correct for the falling sky and you’re good to go!
Friggin racism! Where’s Jesse Jackson? Oh wait! They got rid rid of the white version. Nevermind.
Well if there is a backlog of 70-200’s, they certainly aren’t trying hard to get rid of them. The UK price is 40% up on a year ago.
Neither this or the IS f/4.0 version of the lens show up any more at Adorama’s webpage. Both IS versions of the 70-200mm zoom discontinued at the same time?
Why return a lens that works, and works well? That’s pretty freaking stupid.
Image quality-wise, the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS is the best lens I own. If a new version came out, I wouldn’t want to spend some $500+ likely markup for very little improvement.
Also, these rebates are a yearly thing. I got mine last year for about $1350 (includes having to ship it back once). This year, I got myself the 16-35mm f/2.8L II (which is a nice lens, but not worth the money IMO).
This is absolutely false.
Adorama sucks, Adorama frequently makes these mistakes, and Adorama loves raping you. I lost my camera-shop-fraud virginity to Adorama.
Enjoy your still-lacking-direct-print lens, I am enjoying mine. I’ll upgrade when they add two direct print buttons – one next to DOF preview on the 5D Mark VII and a combo AF stop / direct print button on the lens itself.
There’s still the IS version of the F4 “mini white”
http://www.adorama.com/CA702004ISUK.html
Forget all this lens talk, what I’m really holding out for is a 5 stop image stabilised direct print button. In white, with a red ring. No camera, no lens. Just me in the wilderness with my ISDP5 button. Oh yes.
hm…. sounds like a good idea
we could install the photo “out put” (after yo upress the direct print button) either in one’s mouth, or the other end… whichever works :P
Canon will only feel the need to upgrade if the competition offers something better. The EF 70-200 f2.8L IS like all their L lens in this zoom range is simply peerless and nothing being offered by their competitors touches it so it makes no market sense for Canon to devote resources updating what is already the best in its class.
This can be correct, some dutch webshops are dumping the prices. normal price eu : 1699€ now 1495€ with sunflarecap.
There is definitely something going on here.
example below
http://www.kamera-express.nl/index.php?page=product&product=753
ps : sorry about my bad english.
Yeah, but the F/4 version is sharper and has a better IS. So it makes sense to improve the IS and sharpness to match the f/4 version. :-)
EF 70-200mm f/2.4 L IS USM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gang, I just spoke with Canon marketing… no direct print button on this lens. Instead, they are gearing up for the 5d MK III. They are working on re-implementing eye control to be used for direct print for the new body. Outer most focus point prints 9 copies, center focus point prints a single copy. Also, new dial button for Polaroid mode. Snap and print.
Enjoy
Of course it is discontinued! Who would buy it if there is another product called “Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM AutoFocus Telephoto Zoom Lens with Case & Hood – USA” http://www.adorama.com/CA70200AFL.html for the same price but with case and hood! All you need to do is press “similar items” on Adorama page.
IS?
It’s a must have.
Actually I think it’s the 70-200 L 2.8 (NOT the IS) that was discontinued, it’s no longer shown on http://www.canonusa.com
All four versions of the 70-200 are still listed on Canons web site. http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ProductCatIndexAct&fcategoryid=150
All L series lenses and the TS-E lenses and the 400 DO lens are sold with case and hood….
what you found was the non-IS 70-200 f/2.8
no its still there
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ProductCatIndexAct&fcategoryid=150
third from the left on the top row
But on the german page it´s really disappeared. Only the f/4 is listed. With IS are both listed.
Because the new 70-200 2.8 IS II that will replace the old one will be a better lens? Esp. the IS?
The f4 version is not really noticebly sharper when the f2.8 is stepped down to f4, they are pretty similar. The IS different is just 1 stop, not worth Canon’s investment to upgrade. That beside, there is more people buying the f2.8 IS than the f4 IS and Canon is mainly interested in competition elsewhere than within their own product.
I bought my 5D2 from Adorama and many other things over the years never had a problem.
In fact the only online purchase problem I had was with B&H Photo Video!!!
…because of their no shipping to places like Mail Boxes Etc policy – I had to cancel my order after several phone call battles explaining that I’m not home to sign for a package and no I don’t want my new camera left at the door so please send it to my mailing address that has someone there to sign for it and hold it securely for me!!! And it took a while for my credit card to get credited back!
That and B&H forgot to tell me the equipment didnt have a direct print button on it. (one has to have a sense of humor about it at some point, grrrrrr)
WOW!!! Where can I place my order TODAY?
Awesome! About time they found somehting useful about that eye control focus feature they dropped (which I found totally fun and useful to use).
I looked at the lens chart at http://www.canonusa.com, three 70 -200’s are listed under telephoto, the 70-200 2.8L (NON IS) is not.
I really hope I’m not imagining this.
Lens chart:
http://www.usa.canon.com/app/pdf/lens/Lens_Extender_chart_new.pdf
I recently baught this Lens, to fit m’y 5d II… And omg it is good. This Lens is brilliant… Only issue it weighs the same as a dead cow…
Seeing as the PDF in that link was last modified in January 2008, I would take it with a grain of salt. The 70-200 f2.8 (non-IS) has been left off that list for almost 2 years now, yet it’s still being sold. These lens charts and Canon’s websites have never been accurate as to what is/isn’t still an active SKU.
Read the chart again – it says
EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM/ USM
EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM
EF 70-200mm f/4L USM
Look at the first line and note the dash – this is obviously to signify that the IS USM and non-IS USM versions are listed in the same line. That also goes for EF 28-90mm f/4-5.6 III / II USM etc.
yeppers
the direct USB direct print button adapter is there too
Check it out – The Dark Side with Nat X!
Are you sure?
And even then, is it worth the extra money?
Oh – you’re an elitist that can’t tkae a good photo unless the absolutely best gear available for the time is used. Go get an MF body and back and stop crying.
The thinking of some people astounds me. Amazing.
I concur.
The images from my lens will already cut me at f/2.8, and it gets better at f/4. People cry about sharpness and MTF charts, but honestly, this lens is usually too sharp and when shooting people (with my camera), I have to soften my images (who wants to see everyone’s pores? If you do, BUY THIS LENS!)
The IS is already effective. I don’t see why one would want or need more – carry a monopod or tripod if things are really that dark and you want them to look like daytime.
70-200 2.8L IS USM DPB + anti gravity weightless feature would be nice. LOL this thread great for Sunday morning!
Hey Random, if I just bought an expensive lens and found out a newer, better version was coming out I would be a little bummed too, and pretty sure I’m not alone.
Your thinking astounds me. If you are going to be a tool, take it some place else.
John, keep in mind this is a rumor site and that is a great lens. If you got a great deal, more power to you.
Will that antigravity thing work on my waistline? lol
Perfectly normal.
get a monopod for long session
with remote control
I wish they would update the IS on this lens.
i don’t really understand why the f4 lens gets all the IS love.
What do you mean “Only one stop?”
One stop is double the light.
According to a Canon Rep I spoke to at a Camera & Video show the Mark II will definitely have improved IS and better Optics…he told me to watch Canon European sites for the news
The lense is mostly out of stock i Norway. Only one of the major webshop has a few in stock. Thats when I jumped to canonrumours.com, seems I wasn’t that far off..
I hope it is true, anyway my money is ready
Still in stock at b&h.
Apparently, this has been confirmed.

I can’t believe this! The 100-400L is far older and in greater need of an upgrade. While waiting for the new 100-400L, I decided to go for the 70-200 2.8 as it was considered generally safe. This was a couple of weeks ago and paid $1,600 for it. Arggghhh!!!
David, that’s still the funniest post I’ve ever read on this board (and that’s saying something!)
Thanks Christian!
