We nailed that this lens was coming minutes before the official announcement. That's not ideal, but this is a very special lens. Photographers have been asking for a 24-1200 f/1.4 lens for a long time, this is probably the closest we're going to get to such a lens.

The new lens is priced a few dollars more than the CINE-SERVO 50-1000mm T5.0-8.9 at $79,999. Keeping it under 80 grand is quite the achievement. Canon also has the SS-41 Servo bundle for another $3000 available.

The CINE-SERVO 40-1200mm T5.0-10.8 also has a built in 1.5x extender to get you all the way to 1800mm on the long end. That's quite the range and it will likely sell well for its target market.

The biggest upgrade is that it now covers full-frame image sensors, the previous verison was for Super35 sensors that were very common at the time. I think those days are over for the most part from Canon.

The CINE-SERVO 40-1200mm T5.0-10.8 will be available in ARRI PL and Canon RF mount, and no more EF option.

You have time to save your pennies, the new lens won't be available until September 30, 2026.

  1. This has been the most used lens in all BBC, National Geographic, etc, natural history documentaries for years.

I could definitely see it being used for Planet Earth type of stuff. They needed something like this to get that amazing birds of paradise footage.

  2. I'm not seeing any mention of the R5C in any of Canon's announcements. Can anyone point me towards a specific mention of the R5C? Curious as to what a new firmware would bring beyond bug fixes.
