There are three RF/RF-S lenses coming from Canon on Thursday, November 2, 2023. Two of them you already knew about, the RF 200-800mm f/6.3-9 IS USM and the RF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM.

The third lens coming is a lens people have requested since this web site began 15+ years ago, and that's an RF 24-105mm f/2.8L IS USM Z. We first reported on this lens way back in March of this year and kind of dismissed it, but here we are.

The Camera Insider has posted an image of the lens in all of its potato glory, but it should give you an idea about the lens. We can see a tripod collar is likely included in the box.

We have no idea what the “Z” means in the name, but we'll find out soon.

It looks like the “Z” is for Power Zoom. Canon in the past has used the “PZ” abbreviation for such a feature.

  1. Oh, and what izzzz zis letter 'Z' in ze name of zees new lenz?

Obviously it means that it is also compatible with the Nikon Z mount. Canon becomes a third party lens manufacturer -- that's what will break the internet :D
  2. Wow, didn’t expect that announcement but it does make sense to offer a F2.8 trinity ranging from 15-300mm, especially for sports.

I’d guess the pricepoint will be at around 3 k give or take, hopefully not 4K.

I can’t see me buying this lens in the foreseeable future but who what kind of (indoor) sports my future kids might play. Maybe they’ll give me a reason that I absolutely need this lens
  3. Just placed an order with my local dealer. No idea on cost but expect it to be similar to RF 70-209 mm f2.8
I have $3499 in my head and hoping for $2999. Canon tripod collars are sadly worth about $500 if included in the box.
  4. Oh my oh my. Never in my right might did I see this one coming...not sure if it's worth dumping the 24-70 for this, but I'm sick and TIRED of having to send my 24-70 into Canon for dust removal...this would likely be internal zooming and cover all the bases for photo/video I need.
  5. Wow...what a lens! Big, massive and not a lot smaller than the EF 70-200mm f2.8 LIS III!
I heared of an EF version of this lens that was prototyped way back in 2010ish...it was generally panned and rejected by the various pros who got to test it because it was just too big and heavy. I'm guessing Canon have managed to slim it's weight down and that the pro photographers have gotten a tad stronger! I literally can't wait to try one!
