Heads up… Read “What’s New” for Dec 2nd at Luminous Landscape, re: D3x and why Micheal Reichmann isn’t buying one. Very interesting:
“…even if buying cameras wasn’t a business expense, and even if one can afford something, that doesn’t mean that it’s good value. My late father[-]in[-]law was financially well off, but he’d drive miles out of his way to buy gas for 2 cents a gallon less than at the station just across the street. When I asked why, his reply was simply that it was the principle of the matter.
That’s something of what I feel about the D3x and why I cancelled my order. Yes, I can afford it, but I simply find it not to represent good value. After testing the 24MP Sony A900 (which I purchased for less than the equivalent of US $2,500 here in Toronto last month) the thought of paying US $8,000 for a camera that that has the same resolution, the same frame rates, a similar large and bright viewfinder, etc, just seemed to me to be a bad value proposition. The Canon 5DII at well under $3,000 is another current alternative in a full-frame 20+ MP camera.”

I am kind of in the same boat as you. After I have seen the D3x official sample pics I was pretty amazed by its detail representation and sharpness. However, I was also wondering in the meantime can’t other camera like A900, 5D2 or 1Ds3 reach the same level of clearness and sharpness? I doubt it. It is more like the way how Nikon shot the sample pics (large f, macro lens…etc). However, a lot of Nikon people seem to be happy with that result (and price), claiming all the good characteristis resulted from D3x and saying it is the best camera so far in the world (in terms of image quality, build, features). I am just confused….
sorry if I sound inappropriate…but I am just really wondering or doubting if A900, 5D2 or 1Ds3 can’t do the same
yep… he’s got a very good point… it only really makes sense for those who are heavily invested in Nikon glass and if you ask me, the price tag is kind of a spit in their face… the equivalent of saying “I know you can get practically the same thing for less than half of what we’re asking but you’re stuck with us so you’re going to pay up anyway…”- this for a camera that really isn’t “new” in any significant way…. that leaves a bad taste in my mouth and I haven’t touched a Nikon in years
Hey all, I know we’re talking about Nikon here, but I thought I’d let you know that, here in Saskatchewan Canada, just this morning I got my 5d Mark II. I had to run as soon as I took it home to charge the battery, but later this evening I will send my “unboxing” pictures and maybe CR will post them. I can’t wait!
@anonsk
How does someone who lives in the outback of Saskachewan get a 5d Mark ii while almost everyone in every major urban area in the country is waiting for their call? Congratulations! Love to hear where you purchased yours from. Best regards and am looking forward to your “unboxing” photos.
@EdN
Haha, ya I know, its absolutely awesome that I managed to get one. I’m not sure if my store wants the publicity (as it could turn sour for those who didn’t get one), but I have to say that I am greatly indebted to them for the work they must have done to get me one. But I did place my pre-order as soon as their store opened the morning the camera was announced (Sept 17th). Haha, the camera wasn’t even in their system yet. They said I was top 3 in line of all of their stores in Canada, and this was the only camera that they got in to my local store! So its not like Mark IIs are sprouting from trees here in Sask – I’ve heard that it will be the new year for most other pre-orders. Hopefully in 5-6 hours I’ll be home to show send away the unboxing pictures. Can’t wait to show some samples too!
FYI, it appears that Broadway Photo’s online store shows the Mark II as In Stock and ready to ship in 1-2 days, and its pretty cheap ($2,500, vs the $3,100 I had to pay …). Not sure about store rep or anything, but thought I’d mention …
All this unboxing news is beginning to make me jealous. ;-)
Since the accessories for the 5D Mark II are available, I going to buy them. How ironic that I will receive them long before the camera….
BTW, I really respect Micheal Reichmann. Having bought a book of his and followed his work, I trust his judgment about which cameras work well and which are a value. He’s a photographer’s photographer; what he cares about is the final print and the usability of the device. He is a businessman as well as an artist. Don’t get me wrong, I think that the D3x is probably magnificent (and he probably does, too), but at its price point you really have to want it (or have lots of Nikkor lens).
For my money, the 5D Mark II looks pretty fine. I’ve taken a production 25600 ISO shot posted on the net, did noise reduction, turned it into B&W, and showed it to someone who used to shoot high ISO B&W film. He was amazed. To the extent that you can prevent the banding during capture, the result is amazing compared to push processed 1600 film in terms of sharpness and grain.
Broadway photo (those in NY) are mainly scammer. If you look around on the web you can find hundreds of users complaining about them. I would stay away from them like the plague.
Broadway Camera (canadian company) are very reputable but like other reputable seller, don’t have the camera in stock…
don’t link his site!!
you had me surfing it and i hate nikon with a passion
Don’t make any transaction with Broadway Photos. Sorry, but there is too many bad complaints about the company. Better Also, be careful of the other sister stores of Broadway Photos. It is a total scam!!!
I actually walked into Ritz Camera and placed my 5DII on Saturday. They shipped it out yesterday.
CodeSith, is that true? Did you get the body only, or the kit? I ordered the kit on-line early last week and Ritz still lists my order as back-ordered! Is Ritz stocking dealers whilst leaving on-line preorders hanging? Interesting business model, if so.
Just about had a heart attack when I looked to see the status of my order on Amazon.
The order that was there just an hour ago disappeared, and I could not find evidence that I had even placed it. Looking to see if the item was removed from Amazon, I went to Amazon’s kit page. There I saw a notification at the top saying I had already bought it. Clicking on it to me to a tracking page–
My 5D Mark II kit shipped today, arriving on Thursday! (Now if I can only stop from hyperventilating.)
All you who have ordered from Ritz, I just canceled that order, so that should help you. (Hmmmmm! I wonder how much of the demand for this camera is that people are ordering from multiple dealers?)
About the disappearing order on Amazon…
Because it was placed 2 1/2 months ago, all the more recent orders took precedence in the Amazon order view. Asking for a 6 month list of purchases displayed the camera. It’s a list by order date, not ship date. Duh.
(I’ll have it Thursday, whoo hoo!)
Less drivel, more 1D IV
I think CodeSith is BS’ing us, or Ritz is BS’ing CodeSith. How could there be hundreds backordered and his ships ahead? I think he’s on backorder but doesn’t know it yet.
