EF 35 f/1.4L
I've received a few reports of people around the globe being unable to order EF 35 f/1.4L lenses and being told they're discontinued.

Another reader in France was price watching them and they seem to have disappeared from a few sites.

I don't think the lens is being discontinued myself, but the following lens is for real.

EF 24-70 f/2.8L IS
More murmurs from one person saying they've touched the new 24-70 IS. It is set for a summer launch with availability in October/November.

  • why change something that’s perfectly sufficient? the 35L should be one of the last primes to be messed with.

    i can thing of tons of L primes that should go ahead of the 35: 50L, 135L IS, a faster 85L

  • Huh… I just bought a 35L and it had a UY02xx date code. So Canon was still making the 35L in February 2010. I’d think if it was going to be discontinued soon, they would have let inventory run out instead of having another recent manufacturing run. But it could also be that it sold out in those two months…

  • Sweet! I’ve been waiting for a newer 24-70 L that I could pounce on. I’ve been holding out a while…

  • I highly doubt it is being discontinued. Canon makes lenses in batches and probably is running low on supply and needs to make another 35L. This may or may not also mean that Canon has updated this lens with newer version.

  • The 24-70mm lens needs a update. I’ve had five of them, and sold all five, they just were not that good, compared to my 24-105mm or my 17-55mm lenses.

    I wonder if a $2200 35mm L would sell? Lots of people love the lens.

  • 24-70L will be always one of the best lenses around. IS or not. You will not be on the loosing end even if you choose non IS. Buy it.

  • This is true depending on the copy you get. My friend had a soft copy (back or front focusing, I can’t remember). A trip to the Canon service centre fixed it up fine.

  • Personally, I’m kinda waiting for both of these lenses.

    So I for one would be happy if this news were true.

  • I also compared on my 50D the Canon 24-70 with the 17-55 IS and the later proved to be better. But for FF there is no real alternative to the curent 24-70

  • The 35mm f/1.4L is getting a bit long in the tooth (though not as long as the 50mm f/1.4!). All of the under-100mm EF L primes have been updated to a MkII version in the last 4 years, except the 35L.

  • Summer launch? That means Augest/September date. The 1ds mark IV was rumored to be released during the same period. In addition, the 24-70mm IS was also rumored to be released with the 1ds mark IV.

    If we can confirm the release of the 24-70mm, does that mean that we should expect a 1d mark IV?

    I guess I’m over analizing. :P

  • The 35mm f1.4, together with the 135mm f2 are great walk-around lenses, you can’t get the same bokeh with the 24-70mm. It’ll be a challenge for Canon to improve on them. The 24-70mm is more in need of an upgrade.

  • What do you people think of the Sigma 12-24 and Sigma 50mm f1.4?? I have a 5D 2, but I can’t decide if those are good purchases. I also want the 24 f1.4, are these 3 lenses worth their price?

  • You have a 5DII-get good glass. Wait for your 50mm purchase. Canon could be coming out with an update. 12-24 plus a 24 prime doesn’t make sense. I understand the 12-24 sigma for price difference so get this first.

    Lenses are an investment cam bodies loose value like a car. Good luck.

  • no, they stop making it when they discontinue it. which is now. no one said anything about a new one coming out yet. once they discontinue, thats when they start selling out the last inventory.

  • I agree, where’s the:

    14-24 2.8
    100-400 II
    200-400 f/4

    And a 18mp FF, Pro AF, 8 FPS, pop-up flash commander, small body, with optional wireless grip to put it all on.

  • Well we all have our own “wants” which is why 90% of the CR1 rumours are moat likely just that.

  • Update the 35, 50 1.4 & 135 like the 24.(135 1.8IS hell yeah)
    I’d like to see Canon re-do the 50 1.2 and address the focus shift.
    same with the 85L, faster AF.
    how about a new 50 1.0II

  • Doesn’t canon have a tendency to release lenses with cameras? Did the 70-200 replacement launch with the 1D4? The 18-135 & 15-85 with the 7D/T2i?

    I would put money on the 24-70 coming with the 1DS4. If they touched the 35mm (which they don’t need to) I’d be willing to be they’d add some new coating, and more up to date build quality. If I WAS updating it, I’d make it more expensive and bump the aperture to 1.2. (thus completing the holy trinity of 1.2 lenses)

    In regards to the 135, I’m not sure what to do with it. The optics are amazing. (I personally would like to see an optically stabilized version) Sony has a 1.8 version, and Nikon’s is amazing but needs updating.

    Interesting times if you’re an SLR user.

  • Unless you forgo convenience for primes, then you can do a LOT better on FF. I hope the new 24-70 IS is as great as the 70-200 2.8 IS II (and hope it is smaller and ligher than the original!)

  • Right, but the trip to the Canon service centre has to been taken a cople of times every year, and more and more often the older the lens get. :-(

  • There are plenty of lenses that should be upgraded before the 35L, such as:

    * The fact that owners of Canon bodies are buying Nikon 14-24mm with an adapter (hint: this zoom outperforms the Canon 14mm prime released a year earlier) should make Canon release a quality ultrawide lens before those people start buying Nikon bodies as well.

    * Canon would probably be the last company to produce a fisheye lens for APS-C sensors cameras. Circular fisheyes for both FF & APS-C would be nice additions.

    * Both 28mm lenses are older than the 35L, and the success of the APS-C sized cameras begs for a new one, whether an EF-S 28mm f/1.4 or EF 28mm f/1.4 L

    I would suggest an improved *cheap* 35mm lens for the APS-C sensors at the same opportunity, say an EF-S 35mm f/1.4

    * The time has come to replace the EF 100-400. A new 200-400 f/5.6 or f/4 L that is has a twist (rather than trombone) zoom mechanism would be welcome.

    That’s ignoring lenses like the 20 years old 20mm lens (which never even got an L version) and the ~20 years old 135mm lenses.

    IMHO, Canon should upgrade at least 4-5 lenses before spending anything on a new 35mm L lens.

  • well that’s why they made the mkII… which is pretty good… but you pay through the nose for it.

  • it’s not the “I” because the 24-70 2.8L IS is “is” which means it’s the first of it’s kind.

    I don’t know about you, but my 24-70 is my least used lens because of how soft it is, I started carrying around a 24-105 because it was lighter and sharper.

    I’m really looking forward to the new 24-70 2.8 and really hope it competes with the 70-200 2.8L IS for sharpness.

  • I have both the 17-55 and 24-105 as well. Both great lenses, but I’d also like a 24-70 2.8 IS if it materializes.

    I’m going to sell the 17-55 2.8IS only because I’m now on FF (with crop back-up), and I’m only going to carry around EF lenses so I can use on all bodies. Otherwise, the 17-55 is one of the sharpest zooms made.

  • The 24-70 shouldn’t be soft.

    From what I could gather its one of Canon’s sharpest (!!) lenses – and mine definitely isn’t soft.

    It might be that you got a bad one though – apparently some weren’t quite so good…

  • i rather have a 24-105 f2.8L IS or a 28-85 f1.8L IS

    especially 28-85 would be a nice for low light videography too

  • correction: the 70-200 2.8L IS II as the orrigional was pretty soft… softest of all the L 70-200’s from what I’ve seen.

  • Yeah, and I’d like a 14-300 f/1.0 – and a forklift to carry it around with.

    You realize there are practical limits right? Can you imagine how much glass would be required in a 24-105 f/2.8 lens?

  • I seriously doubt they have or used a 24-70LIS, for one posting the images will violate any NDA that I’m sure Canon will have used.
    =Typo

  • Well, I carry a 70-200 2.8 IS all day now… how much worse could a 24-105 2.8 IS really be? How about a 24-85 2.8 IS?
    I’d really rather have a couple of shorter IS zooms and f2.0.
    24-50 and 50-100 maybe? I don’t really care what they cost as long as I can make money with them.

  • That’s what I’m talking about f/2 zooms! Preferably something either side of 50mm, 35-70 f/2 would be perfect I would be first in line.

  • Would like a new 50 1.4 myself. The 50 1.2 L’s IQ is not great and is totally overprized. Make it “L-like” build with reasonable MFD with useable corner IQ from 1.8 on FF and Canon could have a winner.

  • Tried the Sigma 50 F1.4 on my 5D2, nice build and 77mm filters. But only “usable” from ~F2.8 and MFD not great.

  • EF 14mm f/2.8L, 1991 -> MkII, 2007
    TS-E 17mm f/4L, released 2009
    EF 24mm f/1.4L, 1997 -> MkII, 2008
    TS-E 24mm f/3.5L, 1991 -> MkII, 2009
    EF 50mm f/1.0L, 1989 -> f/1.2L, 2007
    EF 85mm f/1.2L, 1987 -> MkII, 2006
    EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro, released 2009

    EF 35mm f/1.4L, 1998 -> ??

    I’m just sayin’, every ‘current’ prime at 100mm and less with a red ring has seen either been updated or newly released in the last four years. Every prime but the 35L, that is. I think an update is very likely.

    I don’t buy the ‘discontinued’ rumor – they will announce the MkII version, *then* discontinue the current one.

  • tamron made a 28-105 f2.8 10 years ago. with advances in lens design i think it should be possible to make a 24-105 f2.8 IS by now. As for the f2 lens i think a moderately wide angle to moderate telephoto with f2 and IS would be a superb walk a round lens. as for size and weight if people can carry a a 70-200 2.8IS i don’t think it will be that bad. but smaller and lighter is always welcome.
