Canon Officially Announces the Canon RF 45mm f/1.2 STM

Or it's still reserved for R5 II and R1?
It’s not reserved to the R5 II and R1, it’s “cameras released in June 2024 and onwards” :)
So yes, it must work on the R6 III in photo mode.

That’s actually the only difference there is when using a VCM lens with older bodies.

I’m glad that thing has a lock switch, as I’d never use a smooth aperture ring for photography, anyway. I would consider it if it had hard clicks, hard enough to stay in place on the move, but not like that, neither with gentle clicks, as other manufacturers have been implementing.

Canon Officially Announces the Canon EOS R6 Mark III

I'm happy you mentioned the R5M2 overheating because at my job last weekend it overheated and needed a complete shut down TWICE! I'm very tired of the basic missing the marks by Canon. I was SO happy with Canon until the mirorless. My R5 completely and utterly fell apart. I wrote about it here: https://fstoppers.com/reviews/hey-canon-why-are-your-cameras-falling-apart-636447 . YEars later I get emails and DMs of people contacting me that they also have this issue. I was so put off that it took me quite awhile to jump back on and get the next camera. I got the R5M2 and now it's overheating. I think these are such BASIC functions. Why are we missing the mark. Every reveal is some dramatic YouTube 'end of the world earth shattering' announcement but I find myself with my LCDs being held together with rubber bands and my cameras overheating in 65-degree weather. I'm so disapointed in Canon honestly.

Canon Officially Announces the Canon RF 45mm f/1.2 STM

What pointless video features would that entail?
For a start, an aperture ring which is usable for photography only if you have the two latest (until 3 days ago) and more expensive bodies, while all the other bodies make no use of it. But I admit I didn't really went deep on VCM's features as their price is unreachable for me, so I didn't even bother reading anything specific.

Quick question: does the new R6 III make use of that aperture ring in photo mode? Or it's still reserved for R5 II and R1? I jut searched online but couldn't find any certain answer.

I agree, getting to play with the raw files in Lightroom will give us all an informed perspective on the R6iii's noise and image quality.
However, the max iso has been reduced from the R6ii by 2/3rd of a stop. thisis uaully an indicator from Canon as to it's expected hit on the increased noise threshold those extra mp cause. If the ios noise between the R6ii to R5 was a whole stop then this increase in rez will affect the noise too. So maybe 1/2 to 2/3rd of a stop is about right.
this morning, I've heared numerous youtube influencers talking about the great features of the R6iii....most of these great features are alredy present in the R6ii....which goes to show how good the R6ii is / was.
Here in the Uk, the launch price is around £2700 GDP...whcih is very high considering I can buy a new R5ii (via grey import) for the same price. A mint used R5 for £1600 and a new R6ii (grey) for on;y £1350....for only a few new fetures...that's a lot of £££ for not a lot of benefits. I can literally buy a pair of R6ii's for the launch price of one R6iii.
I think if I was looking to jump from DSLR to mirrorless, this would be a great camera. I think upgraders from the EOS R and R6mk1 have a lot of milage in this upgrade. but for existing R6ii users....it's more of an expensive side grade. Slightly improved, more of an evolution that definatly builds on the shoulders of it's great predecessor. If Canon continues selling their R6ii alongside the R6iii, then the R6ii may become the true bargain of the canon range.
Please look at the native ISO range - it's double the previous model. The boosted range is indeed lower. I'm certain the new model will one stop better. Let's wait for the tests.

Canon R6 Mark 3 and 430EX 2

Hi all. Do I need to buy a new flash to use with the R6? How does it behave on a R6 mark 2. I know I won’t have the AF beam but the camera itself will do that for me. So am I loosing any other features that would affect me in everyday use. I really never dug into settings for the flash. All ever did was maybe down the output of the flash when shooting in manual or AP mode.

If I bought a new flash what would I be gaining in general? Thanks a lot for the useful info!

Jim

Canon Officially Announces the Canon RF 45mm f/1.2 STM

I dont shoot video so I dont really like the VCM line and how they prioritize pointless video features over photography. Terrible value for 1599€ or over 2k for the 85mm.
What pointless video features would that entail? All I see is a good photo lens that can also be used in video.

A Look at the RF 45mm f/1.2 STM, it seems compact.

The
But do not buy any Leica lenses below 35 mm, unless tested. You will normally experience an ugly colour cast on both side of the pictures, and a huge loss of sharpness too. Even some older 35mm summicrons disappoint (around 1968). So, testing is highly recommended.
I'd also warmly recommend the Novoflex adapter.
PS: Some early 50mm summicrons also used thorium in their lens-glass formula...
My experience with vintage thorium lenses that have yellowed is not a good one. I have found both a loss in light transmission and resolution as well as a colour cast.

Actually, the 50 VCM is the best optically corrected VCM lens of them all. It vignettes and distorts less than the RF 50mm f/1.2. It's a terrific lens.

Canon Officially Announces the Canon EOS R6 Mark III

R6 III or R5 II?
I didn't hesitate a second, even before the R6 III was officially introduced, and ordered a second R5 II.
- Better EVF
- More MP for heavy cropping
-Top LCD
- Better build
- Muscle memory, identical second camera, which is why, incidentally, I didn't get a cheaper R5. I definitely appreciate the on/lock/off switch!
Sounds great and nice that it works for you :)

I was/ still am thinking about adding the original R6 to my R5. The controls would basically be the same (only no top LCD), I would have a camera with fewer mp´s and as two camera set-up the controls would be a huge benefit. But the weight and size is actually not what I´m looking for. Still not ruling it out and haven't ordered the R8 yet. But I figure that will happen with Black Friday. If only Canon had a compact photo centric Powershot such as V3 out already...

Btw one of my next purchases will be a good RF-Leica M39 thread mount adapter. The 20mm flange focal distance of the RF mount allows to adapt M39 lenses and keep infinity focusing, since that classic Leica mount has a flange focal distance of 28.8mm. I'd like to try some of my vintage M39 lenses on my R5 II, like my 1.4/50mm and 1.8/85mm from Canon (late lenses from Canon's rangefinder era). Adds a bit of radioactivity to my images ;) since the highly refractive lens parts were made of thoriated glass...
I have the KF M39 to RF adapter and I can confirm the Jupiter 50mm f/2 works great on a R6 ! Very small lens. It would give even the Devil himself a halo at f/2.

*lol* What a w** dream. Especially with the "L" in it.
But I can help: just add about $500 and in return you'll recieve f/1.4:

Go and buy an RF 50mm f/1.4 L VCM

Do you think it's a good idea to share the forums across multiple articles? It's quite confusing to me.

Anyways. Thanks for the technical article about the lens and the AF note. Would you mind writing an article about the DPAF in details? The marketing materials don't say much (as usual). Like the info that every pixel is split in two, why it has to be like that instead of using neighbour (or every other) pixels, what's the impact on computing power (obviously there are double the number of pixels needs to be processed), what are the advantages and disadvantages against Sony solution. It also looks like DPAF should be billion times better than the other systems but in reality Sony seems to be just fine with their AF system.. etc. I know it can be explained in a comment but a full article with some pictures and some related info would be nice I think.

On the subject of GPS logging: Most of the time your phone is the only additional device you need, but connecting it reliably to the camera is problematic. So I've used it simply as GPS logger with a simple and free program called ... "GPSlogger". ;) Once you've given it sufficient permissions it will doggedly record your track as long as you don't turn your phone off. I have not noticed any excessive drain on battery. This on Android at least.

It would be really nice if the camera recorded compass heading, elevation angle and focus distance in the images. Those combined with the GPS position would enable calculating the (approximate) focus point location later. Likely not relevant most of the time, but fun when recording far-away observations.

Nice article :) R5ii and R6iii should be a fun read, but if money and big files aren´t decisive factors, I´d guess most people go for R5ii.

Well, selling the R5 at 1.800 € to MPB is not really an option. First of all, wirkaufens.de gives you almost 2.100 € and on "kleinanzeigen" (belongs to eBay) you at least get 2.000 €. Switching the R5 to R6iii would cost me money atm. I could only sell the R5 now and buy the r6iii when cash back/ rebates kick in and such without losing (too much) money. The value of investing in this trade just doesn't pay off imo.

Anyway, I'm not selling my R5. I absolutely love this camera. Only thing: the 45mp are a curse and a blessing: on some occasions when I take hundreds (or even a couple of thousands) images at once, such as school plays. I really dread the amount of data. Meanwhile, for wildlife pics and landscapes, which I know I'll end up printing, it is a true blessing.

So, instead of investing 800-1000 € to switch (back) to the 32mp sweet spot (30 MP on my R was/ is my sweet spot) I'll invest that money in a R8. Gives me perfectly fine 24 MP for the occasions I don´t need 45 mp and a two camera setup when needed. I also considered the original R6 due the exact same controls as R5 and given the similar price point, but for hiking and family day trips with our baby coming soon, the R8 wins. Size and weight due matter here.
