What pointless video features would that entail? All I see is a good photo lens that can also be used in video.

My experience with vintage thorium lenses that have yellowed is not a good one. I have found both a loss in light transmission and resolution as well as a colour cast.

I hope that Canon R5 will get an update at least for recording in 3:2 format. Or maybe Waveform

Actually, the 50 VCM is the best optically corrected VCM lens of them all. It vignettes and distorts less than the RF 50mm f/1.2. It's a terrific lens.

I was/ still am thinking about adding the original R6 to my R5. The controls would basically be the same (only no top LCD), I would have a camera with fewer mp´s and as two camera set-up the controls would be a huge benefit. But the weight and size is actually not what I´m looking for. Still not ruling it out and haven't ordered the R8 yet. But I figure that will happen with Black Friday. If only Canon had a compact photo centric Powershot such as V3 out already...

They are grumbling pretty hard over at Sony Rumors . The Canon R6 III is such a good camera that nobody expects the Sony A7V to actually compete with it.

I have the KF M39 to RF adapter and I can confirm the Jupiter 50mm f/2 works great on a R6 ! Very small lens. It would give even the Devil himself a halo at f/2.

this is one case where the author was accurate

it's a 38% increase in megapickles, but a 17% increase in resolution.

Anyways. Thanks for the technical article about the lens and the AF note. Would you mind writing an article about the DPAF in details? The marketing materials don't say much (as usual). Like the info that every pixel is split in two, why it has to be like that instead of using neighbour (or every other) pixels, what's the impact on computing power (obviously there are double the number of pixels needs to be processed), what are the advantages and disadvantages against Sony solution. It also looks like DPAF should be billion times better than the other systems but in reality Sony seems to be just fine with their AF system.. etc. I know it can be explained in a comment but a full article with some pictures and some related info would be nice I think.

Nice to see that the resolution math is done correctly. Comparing the linear resolution, not megapixels.

On the subject of GPS logging: Most of the time your phone is the only additional device you need, but connecting it reliably to the camera is problematic. So I've used it simply as GPS logger with a simple and free program called ... "GPSlogger". Once you've given it sufficient permissions it will doggedly record your track as long as you don't turn your phone off. I have not noticed any excessive drain on battery. This on Android at least.

It would be really nice if the camera recorded compass heading, elevation angle and focus distance in the images. Those combined with the GPS position would enable calculating the (approximate) focus point location later. Likely not relevant most of the time, but fun when recording far-away observations.

Nice article R5ii and R6iii should be a fun read, but if money and big files aren´t decisive factors, I´d guess most people go for R5ii.

Well, selling the R5 at 1.800 € to MPB is not really an option. First of all, wirkaufens.de gives you almost 2.100 € and on "kleinanzeigen" (belongs to eBay) you at least get 2.000 €. Switching the R5 to R6iii would cost me money atm. I could only sell the R5 now and buy the r6iii when cash back/ rebates kick in and such without losing (too much) money. The value of investing in this trade just doesn't pay off imo.

Anyway, I'm not selling my R5. I absolutely love this camera. Only thing: the 45mp are a curse and a blessing: on some occasions when I take hundreds (or even a couple of thousands) images at once, such as school plays. I really dread the amount of data. Meanwhile, for wildlife pics and landscapes, which I know I'll end up printing, it is a true blessing.

So, instead of investing 800-1000 € to switch (back) to the 32mp sweet spot (30 MP on my R was/ is my sweet spot) I'll invest that money in a R8. Gives me perfectly fine 24 MP for the occasions I don´t need 45 mp and a two camera setup when needed. I also considered the original R6 due the exact same controls as R5 and given the similar price point, but for hiking and family day trips with our baby coming soon, the R8 wins. Size and weight due matter here.
