Preorder the New Tamron Lenses Now

5 stops of IS (VC).. Thats really going to help.

Now at first when I looked at the construction were it state 23 elements in 17 groups I thought it was just a repackage. But closer look shows its a new construction just heavily based on the previous and one of the glas elements replaced with a LD element. So it looks like they just refined an already good performing optical design.

I am highly considering getting this one.

W-E1/5DsR iOS utilities?

Just got my W-E1 for my 5DsR. No problem getting it working on a MacAir and my iPhone 5. Re iPhone apps, there is Canon's Camera Connect, and just noticed Cascable. Are there other apps to consider for remote shooting? Cascable has a free basic set, and then a pro bundle. Is the pro bundle worth it?

The biggest issues is the lack of depth of field preview on the mobile device and the inability to enlarge parts of the preview image for precise focusing. Any iPhone apps that can do that?

Canon 600 f4L IS II with Multiple Extenders

as one who is feverishly saving for the 600/4 II, those images are amazing.

I have no idea how you arranged such access, but I suppose your username is a clue. That final image would have me way too nervous to attempt any such shots.

Your images are a great example of the resolving capabilities of this incredible equipment.

I wasn't aware one could stack the 2.0x TC's - Mk III on Mk II.

fascinating images - compliments.

Samyang 14mm f2.4 Premium review

The lens has been reviewed at that site:

The reviewer is interested in astrophotography so he tested the lens for coma :)

Thanks for sharing this link! This lens looks very, very impressive. Especially if paired with the newer resolution monsters from Canon, Nikon, and Sony. I wonder if Samyang will offer this in the Pentax mount to pair up with the newer K1 (a mostly good performer from what I read with exceptional Raw images right out of the camera). I would like to see this lens tested on a 5DS-r and a 5DS... Pretty amazing performance though for this lens. Looks like the new king for Astro-photography.

UPDATED: More Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 VC G2 & 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 VC Information

if the biggest complaint re Tamron's lenses is the direction that the zoom ring turns, I'd say Tamron is doing just fine.

having just added Tamron's 24-70/2.8 VC to my Tamron collection (70-300 VC, 16-300 Di II VC PZD, 28-300 Di VC PZD, 60/2 Di II & 150-600 VC (still G1), I can honestly state that my adjustment to Tamron's zoom direction has been nearly instantaneous. It just isn't a problem.

The recent tap in console (correct term?), for the G2's & select other recent Tamrons, is a much better way of providing for firmware updates than boxing up everything and mailing all back to Tamron - as had been the case with the M series Canon bodies. Each iteration of the M series was serially incompatible with Tamron firmware. My solution: ditch the M series and use my Fuji's (without my Tamron lenses, as there are- to date - no XF mount Tamrons) - at least for now.

My first modern Tamron (the older Tamron's are, imho, not worth discussing) was the 70-300 VC. I still use it and like it - even on my 1DX2, 1D4, 5D & 7D2 bodies. While the Canon L variant is enticing, why fix what isn't broken? Besides, when I need the best IQ, I'll use Canon's beast - the 28-300L. So I still normally mount the Tamron, and look forward to the eventual reviews of the 70-300 VC G2 variation.

Otherwise, I see an eventual upgrade to my 150-600 (though I'm saving first for the Canon 600/4 II), and I may add the new'ish 45mm prime.

While it may annoy others, the direction of the zoom ring has not been an issue.

Canon on 250MP APS-H Sensor Plans (again)

Vladimir Koifman's blog brought to my attention this brief, but very clear message from CANON where they plan to use their 250MP baby APS-H CMOS sensor.

Please note 5 fps of 1/120 part of the sensor's area is needed for FulllHD resolution.

As the first comment stated "How can any APS-H format lens possibly provide enough resolution for this sensor?"

My take - they go for the
"surveillance and industry implementation"
just because, there's no good enough image CPU, lenses and good computer tech for efficient exploitation of this tech for the photographers market to be offered.

Last time we've heard about this little monster was exactly one year ago.

5D MkIV battery life vs 5DIII

pwp said:
The battery life in my twin battery gripped 5DIII was nothing short of incredible. I hardly chimp, and could get 2-3000 shots in a busy day. My new (two days ago) 5DIV with grip & two new genuine LP-E6n batteries is pathetic by comparison. I'll be needing an extra set of LP-E6n's.

Yes, GPS is off and WiFi is off. The battery was showing half full after just a few hundred shots. Just stills, no live view. I appreciate there is more going on with the 5DIV, not least the touch screen. Being new, I was chimping more than usual, and doing more menu dives than usual, but even so, this thing is eating up the power!

Is this typical for the 5DIV?

Thank you in advance.

Hi PWP

Not sure of your shooting preferences but to get the most out of the 5d4 batteries there are some things you might be able to do. If you shoot RAW only and dont have need of the jpg enhancements that run in-camera, you can switch off all noise reduction, as well as Auto Lighting optimizer, Highlight tone priority and also the lens corrections (vignetting, CA, distortion etc). Even if you only shoot RAW, those processes run for each shot when the little jpeg for the rear screen is built and they use power, more of it due to the bigger file sizes.
You can also reduce the amount of seconds that the shot just taken shows for on the rear screen to a minimum.
I also set the camera's internal timer to the minimum amount of time before it goes into standby mode.

With the 5Dmk4 running that way i usually get just over a 1000 shots to a charge, and that includes a little live view work typically and a little chimping.
Cheers

What post-processing did you do? Do you boost vibrance, colour and contrast?

Nothing special here. I use my standard workflow that I discuss in my Post Processing Ebook - http://www.glennbartley.com/PostProcessingEbook.html

Cheers!

Does that mean we have to buy it to find out?

Yep, which means the suspicion of Mr Bartley's presence on the forum as just a means of self promotion is correct, which I hope is judged to break forum rules and his posts removed.

Edit: No, he is a personal friend of Craig, the site owner, so he can do what he likes.

70-200 f4 L IS USM+1,4X or 70-300 f4-5,6 L IS USM ?

A few days ago I decided to buy the 70-300 L and I must say that I am very satisfied.

It is solid as a rock (perhaps too…), excellent sharpness (on the full-frame), small size and great versatility.
Between the other using it up to 200mm, the display of the 6D tells me that becomes a f 5.0 and consequently the loss of brightness with respect to 70-200 f4 is truly minimal.

A tiny problem is the hood, rather hard to fit and that soon will ruin the frame… :(

I then ordered the indispensable tripod mount ring C WII because the palm of the left hand goes easily to interfere with the focus ring.
Again, thank you all for the advice.

Yes, this happened: I became a FF snob

Ok, seriously, why is Olympus, with a micro 4/3, so popular? This has me scratching my head. Friends who have them admit they aren't great for prints bigger than 5x7, maybe 8x10 with a great capture. Is that a nod to reality? Most of our photos are shown on the web or in very small prints?

Not sure who your friends are , but my results are totally different. I have taken comparison shots with my Olympus E-M1 and my 6D. At 8 x 10 size, they are indistinguishable. At 11 x 17 size, one MIGHT be able to tell which camera took the shot. Shots were taken in daylight, so, yes, you might have different results in low light.

Having owned MFT, crop and FF, I do notice the increased noise with crop and MFT in lower light. But since I shoot almost always in daylight at ISO 200, the 6D was sold and the MFT and new crop (M5) are what I have in the bag for now.

Good to hear. Those little cameras are so tempting.

And, really, are any of us sure of who our friends are? :o

Poll: Are 5D3 owners going to buy a 6D2?

I am only looking for current 5D3 owners that skipped the 5D4, please.

way too soon to determine if someone "skipped the 5D4" and we have no idea on the ergonomics of the new 6D body.

Come now, I clearly meant people who skipped the 5D4 so far. If the price plummets or the 6D2 ends up lacking a critical feature, it would tip the 5D4 fence-sitters dramatically.

I generally am seeing the 5D3 camp -- those that use it as their principal rig -- doing one of four things this cycle:

  • They became early adopters of 5D4 -- they got one within the first 60 days of release
  • They are presently waiting to choose between the 5D4 and 6D2
  • They will get a 6D2 for either size/weight or value reasons
  • They will hold out and not buy either the 6D2 or the 5D4 this cycle or wait a long period of time for their chosen next camera to come down in price. Either way, this camp is in no hurry to retire their 5D3.

This very informal poll would imply that:

1) A majority of this group (a shade over 2/3 at present) will keep shooting their 5D3 and not get a 5D4 or 6D2 ...at present pricing or expectation of pricing.

2) A small number (1/6 at present) of folks are going to replace their 5D3 with a 6D2.

3) Most peoples' minds are somehow already made up on this. Only 10/66 responses are in the 'Mind not made up' / 'Might revisit 5D4 based on 6D2 specs'

(rrc, #3 above gets to your "way too soon" comment. I agree that a gamechanging 6D2 spec list or design might rock this poll a bit, but only 10/66 in the uncertain bucket might imply that the vast majority sufficiently believe the rumored specs/prices to have made up their mind.)

I find everyone's thought processes fascinating with this.

It's not over until fat lady sings. Or, in this case, until the camera's been released and on the market for at least a few months. It'd be interesting if Canon had a poll on purchase of a 6D2 asking what your previous camera was, if any. But as for before the camera's even announced, always best to take answers with a grain of salt. People on both sides may change their minds. I know a company that gets a LOT of requests to do a certain type of product, but whenever the company makes the requested product, few actually buy it. There's a big difference between what people say they will do and what they will actually do.

Canon could always use warrantee registrations to get the previous camera data. Probably why they hope to get online registration of all products.

Old [larger sensor] cameras a cheap alternative to 80D?

Well, I ended up getting the 1D mark II and the Tamron 28-75 F2.8 lens.
I have only had a short time to play with it, and all I can do is take a few random images in my dark apartment (night).
I'll do a proper test soon. This camera is an interesting beast, and takes some getting used to because of the whole different concept of operating it.

For now I am happy with things, but I will only know after I do some proper test shots during the day.

Sigma Art lenses vs. Canon firmware update

MikleK said:
Hello everybody.
We all know that new Sigma Art lenses being incredible pieces of engineering art, just don't work on Canon's body as they should. As far as I know Nikon cameras don't have such a problem.
Does anybody know if it's made particularly to annoy Sigma and force customers to buy genuine Canon lenses or Sigma just doesn't know any Canon's technologies to make their lenses fit properly?

And the second question, if you don't mind :)
What would you recommend in case of using Sigma Art lenses after all, to use older Canon firmware (altogether with the newest ones in Sigma lenses) or vice versa, the newest ones? Or it doesn't make sense at all and every firmware had, is having and will have these autofocus issues?
Sorry if this question had already been asked, but I couldn't find such a topic here.
Many thanks :)

Canon does not share their AF protocols, so 3rd party manufacturers have to reverse-engineer the AF communications with the camera.

It is doubtful that Canon specifically targets 3rd party lens manufacturers with firmware updates to brick lenses, although if there is a firmware update scheduled to address another issue, who knows.

Far as I know, it is not possible to downgrade Canon firmware.
