Thinking about upgrading my 1DX to the MK2

I can't speak to the 1DX I, but I have been very happy upgrading from the 5D to the 1DX II. However, my understanding is that you won't see much of an improvement at higher ISOs, the sensor improvements are primarily in improved dynamic range at the low end. I was never a "shadow pushing/banding" sort of guy, but I do appreciate working with the files over those of the 5D III, they just seem to be a lot easier to work with.

...Has the mkII been out long enough for the price to drop and stabilize from the initial 'early adopter' point? ...

Before I bought the MK II, I took a hard look at the Canon Price Watch numbers and also did a search for specials around Thanksgiving to Christmas, basically I concluded that the 1D X saw almost no price drop until about three years in and could find no bargains around the holidays, so I don't think the "early adopter" issue is as big of a factor with the 1 Series.

Any sales comparison that doesn't include the world's best selling cameras (ie the Fuji Instax line) lacks authority.

This is from last christmas - http://www.imaging-resource.com/news/2015/12/31/amazons-best-selling-camera-item-this-holiday-was...film

I'm sure this year's sales volume will be even better, and I suspect the only reason digital sales are down is because everyone is buying Instax cameras.

Come on man. That's an instant film camera. :)

Leica Announces the TL System

HTML:
<em>The new camera system impresses with perfected features, unique design, precise, high-performance lenses and a range of functional accessories and technical equipment.</em></p>
<p><strong>Wetzlar, 8 November 2016.</strong> Building on the Leica T camera system, which has been continually advanced in terms speed, ease of handling and flexibility since its launch in 2014, the Leica TL embraces all the perfected features and leads the innovative camera concept into a new generation with even more innovations and new aspects of its design. One of these innovations is the doubling of the size of its internal buffer memory to 32 GB. Other new features are improved autofocus, especially in AF-C mode, and optimised compatibility with lenses from other Leica camera systems. For instance, the Leica TL now supports SL-Lenses with OIS and allows the use of Leica R-System lenses in combination with the R-Adapter L. A new Leica TL app with revised functions offers additional options for sharing pictures by email or on social networks and is now available for the first time for Android as well as iOS devices.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>The Leica TL will in available in three colour options from the date of launch: the silver and black versions are identical in design and construction, while the titanium-coloured option is distinguished by a bevelled edge (chamfer) to the top and bottom plates. Functional camera accessories, such as the new high-quality protectors in Nappa leather, which can stay on the camera when changing the battery, and colour-coordinated carrying straps in stone-grey, black, red and cemento, round off the TL system portfolio.</p>
<p>In combination with its high-performance image processor, the large, APS-C-format, CMOS image sensor of the Leica TL guarantees exceptional imaging quality and delivers brilliant pictures with outstanding contrast, finest detail resolution and natural colour rendition – even in unfavourable lighting conditions.</p>
<p>The comprehensive portfolio of lenses for the Leica TL offers an ideal range of focal lengths for all situations and types of photography. The TL-System currently comprises six lenses – three prime lenses and three zooms – that meet the needs of every photographic situation. The two fast prime lenses, the Leica Summicron-TL 23 mm f/2 ASPH. and the Summilux-TL 35 mm f/1.4 ASPH., are classic focal lengths for reportage photography, and the APOMacro-Elmarit-TL 60 mm f/2.8 ASPH. complements them ideally as a lens for finely detailed close-up photography. The three compact zoom lenses, the Leica Super-VarioElmar-TL 11–23 mm f/3.5–4.5 ASPH., Vario-Elmar-TL 18–56 mm f/3.5–5.6 ASPH. and APO-Vario-Elmar-TL 55–135 mm f/3.5–4.5 ASPH., cover an entire range of focal lengths equivalent to 17 to 200 mm in 35 mm format and deliver outstanding images with rich contrast from corner to corner of the frame.</p>
<p>All Leica TL-Lenses impress with exceptional imaging performance at all distances from their close focusing limits to infinity and deliver pictures with the inimitable ‘Leica look’ and unique bokeh. Developed by optical design specialists in Wetzlar, they offer the exceptional imaging performance for which Leica lenses are famed. The combination of optical and precision engineering expertise and the use of finest materials in their construction ensures their constant quality and reliability in use.</p>
<p>Thanks to the L-Bayonet mount shared by the Leica TL and SL cameras, SL-Lenses can also be used without an adapter on the Leica TL. With this, Leica once again carries forward its fundamental principles of cross-system compatibility and sustainability, which is now also reflected in a uniform product designation. Appropriate adapters are also available for using Leica M and R lenses on the camera.</p>
<p>The particular trademark of the Leica TL is the unusual design of its extremely compact body. Each camera body is precisely machined from a single block of aluminium in the Leica factory. The use of premium materials and their processing in an elaborate manufacturing process are unique in the history of camera construction and lend the Leica TL-Camera an unmistakeable look, feel and solidity.</p>
<p>The handling concept of the Leica TL is clearly structured, intuitive to use and concentrates only on relevant functions. The ‘control centre’ of this concept is its clearly laid out, 3.7- inch touchscreen display. It is generously dimensioned and generates a bright and clear image that allows precise and reliable assessment during subject composition and in playback mode. Numerous functions in capture and playback mode can be controlled simply by touching the screen. The only other controls are four ergonomically positioned haptic control elements that are intuitive in their operation. This ensures that camera users can concentrate fully on composing their pictures – without any unnecessary distractions. The freely configurable MyCamera menu of the Leica TL offers even greater flexibility, even in spontaneous snapshot situations. This means that the photographer always has fast access to the most frequently used features and personalised presets.</p>
<p>Thanks to its integrated WiFi module and the function for setting up its own mobile hotspot, the Leica TL can conveniently transfer stills and videos by WLAN to smartphones, tablets, laptops or desktop PCs from almost anywhere and allows users to share their pictures and films by email, on Facebook or in other social networks. A free Leica TL app for iOS and Android devices is available with the release of the camera. A particularly practical feature of the app is the remote function. This lets users connect a smartphone or tablet to the camera by WLAN as an electronic viewfinder for the Leica TL and offers remote control of shutter speed and aperture settings – for example for shots with the self-timer or from unusual angles.</p>

1DX mkii vs 5D mk iv

Larsskv said:
I have a question to you 1DX II and 5DIV owners. I have a 5Ds and a 1DX, with I got in the same order.

The 5Ds produces amazing images, and has a very precise focusing system. The ergonomics are also great. I was very happy with it, and wasn´t missing much, until I later got the 1DX.

I just love using the 1DX. It´s responsiveness in every aspect, the large viewfinder, the build quality, and it´s ergonomics makes a huge difference with regards to the overall user experience. It has become the camera I grab most of the times, and that I want to use. The 5Ds is kind of "dull" to use in comparison. The downside to the 1DX, however, is that it´s files often lags behind what I am used with from the 5Ds. Especially, I wish it´s metering system was better. The exposure is less predictable, and highlights are blown much more often than with the 5Ds, which gets the exposure close to perfect every time.

So, to my question, those of you that have experience with 1DX, 1DXII, and preferably 5Ds/sr, do you find the 1DXII to be a significant upgrade over the 1DX, in terms of metering, and overall image/file quality? Does the 1DXII often make you wish that you had used the 5Ds in stead?

I am also considering replacing the 1DX with a 5DIV + a battery grip. The 5DIV has some great features, I think, but I am afraid I would miss the responsiveness of the 1DX and the big viewfinder to much to choose the 5DIV over the 1DXII. Does anyone have an experience on the overall responsiveness on both the 1DXII vs 5DIV?

And, for the record, I rarely need the high fps on the 1DX, but the larger spread of AF points and improved AF system in the 1DXII and 5DIV is tempting.

Thank you!

I never had the original 1dx, but I have the 5dsr and the 1dx2. The only thing I'm missing from the 5dsr is the ability to zoom in into details. The 1dx2 is my to-go camera now, and I use the 5dsr for staged shots with controlled light. Before I was using the 5dsr for everything (replaced the Sony a7r2). Besides the AF I think the 1dx2 metering is also superior to the 5dsr (which lacks the AF spot linked mode). The 1dx2 is a wonderful brick :) rugged, fast, good in low light. I never had so many in-focus shots on my 85/1.2 as I'm having now. The 5dsr is a resolution monster though... IMHO both make a great combo. Of course I would prefer a 1dx3 with 50mpx @ 14 fps (dreams, dreams... :) )

EOS 5D Mark IV - the crippled generalist

Not sure if this is the best video example, lot of caveats here before you should watch this video.

This was shot at local gym, so poor-ish light. Settings: 1/200, F2.2, ISO1600.

Shooting 1080p60. Slowed down by 4x in PP, so playback is 15 fps. Also cropped roughly 50% on both axis, so 25% of the resolution really, and then resampled back to 1080p.

Plus the person holding camera (I was shooting stills) wasn't doing super good on holding the camera stable, so the camera swings around quite plenty. I didn't do any PP video stabilization.

And I didn't bring my Zoom so I just dropped audio completely and replaced with generic youtube soundtrack.

Enough excuses why this doesn't look that good? I hope so, here's the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSnxJBRYoj4

Billy the Clown (Short film shot on C100 and Tamron 45mm VC)

Hey guys!
Recently made this short film for halloween but could not edit it on time due to other commitments :/ but hey, better late than never!

It was my first time shooting on a Canon C100 (prev. used 5D Mark ii), and my god, it's sharp. So sharp paired with the Tamron 45mm VC. And the dynamic range, low light (most shots are at ISO 1600), just.. Amazing. Have a look for yourself! The one thing that wasn't so nice was the crop factor - got too used to the full frame!

LINK: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wdwjwNf9-w

The short film looks at the life of an everyday creepy/killer clown. With all the clown sightings recently, I wanted to explore the other side of the story and just how ridiculous it is for one to go through all the trouble and wait such a long time, just for a scare/laugh. Ridiculous. Also wanted to explore what makes one person hang onto something and the growth/letting go of someone/something... You'll see.

Love to know what you think guys! Check out the Behind the Scenes too if you wanna see how it was made :)
Eugene

"Sweeping Panoramic" Has Canon heard about it ?

Panos beg for other things that you can't do with a phone, like using the stitch to get a decent ( sweeping :-X ) view but with greater magnification from a longer lens, giving a different perceived perspective to a normal eye's view. I did this at Harlech castle to make the castle larger in the picture, but also to get more of the Snowdonia mountains in view behind.

Oh yes, and then there is the detail ! ;)

Incidentally this was shot on the 12.7 mp original 5D and a small amount of Kodak Portra 160 film grain simulation added.

Firmware: Canon EOS 5DS & EOS 5DS R v1.1.0

jeffa4444 said:
Updated firmware and used the W-E1 in my 5DS. Set-up identical to th 6D and very easy to use was able to connect to my iPad Pro in seconds.
Does rob the SD slot if left in all the time.
"Seconds" may give people the wrong impression, so just to be specific (this was timed):

Cannot physically be done in less than ~30 sec. - and then only if you are an expert in clicking through the menus on a touch screen with no hesitation at all and have linked up the two devices before and not used the wifi with another device in between.

It's 14 button clicks (!) to change from one device to another - even if used before... (easier to do if you have a touchscreen) but the 5DS/R does not.

Why? Because it does not allow the camera to remember a device and does not allow a unified profile and does not allow the user to specify the security level. If any of the three were different life with Canon wifi would be much easier.

Nikon - that is actually "seconds". And you can link up a new device just like that: Snap.

Firmware: Canon EOS 5DS R & EOS 5DS Firmware Version 1.1.0

I've just updated the firmware to 1.1.0 on my 5DS. Two points not every time but sometimes my camera takes longer than normal to start-up when switching on. Secondly I cannot see wi-fi in the menu admittedly I don't have my W-E1 card yet but thought it would be listed.

The menu will appear after the Wi-Fi Adapter inserted in the camera. However, you can find the hidden items in “adding to MY MENU”.

This and That...A few new birds...

Hi Alan.
I have Glenn's trilogy of books (PP flash and Video Simplified) plus the 7DII setup guide that he does. All good informative reading.
I never really gave it a thought about not wanting to share the settings. I'm reading this on a tablet and the only access to the exif is via Jeffrey's exif viewer and that doesn't work for more than one image on any URL. I guess I can open on a pic and right click!

Cheers, Graham.

Hi Glenn.
Excellent shots of some truly beautiful subjects.
+1 on knowing the gear used for the shots, also the settings if possible please.

Cheers, Graham.

You have to pay for being told the settings. He sells them in eBooks, which he advertises under his signature. To be fair, he leaves the EXIF data on his images, which is good. Those images were taken with a 600mm f/4II and a 7DII. He's a pro, and those images are good.

Canon 5DIV - Possible Strobe / Flash Defect - Can anyone confirm or deny this?

No problem here, but I didn't use a current version of Adobe's products, either.

I tried to create the issue in Capture One and could not.

I converted that same RAW file in Adobe DNG Converter and opened the DNG in LR 5.7 and could not create the issue that way either.

So that leads me to one of two conclusions....

1) My camera is unaffected

2) It's an issue with the current version of Adobe's products

Michael, I looked for a download of one of your RAW images and couldn't find it to try it out with my 2 methods. If you'd provide one of your RAW files, I'd be happy to check my 2 methods. Also, I'd recommend trying in Canon's DPP software (which I also have and would be willing to try for you if you don't want to go through the trouble) to see if you can recreate the problem there too. It's possible Adobe is to blame.

Canon Inc. to Sell Sensors to Third Parties

Keep in mind these image sensors will likely be used for something other than still cameras, and could appear in things like cars, robots and other pieces of technology
But it will be interesting if other still/video camera companies are interested in getting another supply source ;)

That spec is really not that impressive. First they are known to have no BSI and low DR. and even if you forget about that reputation that 120MP sensor can only output 9.4 FPS at 10-bit. What kind of consumer camera you would want to get for this spec? Even worse they can't handle on-chip HDR even for low pixel count sensor, which is becoming standard for many industrial use. You would wonder how they can compete with Sony, who is covering all markets from very high end equipment to high end IoT these days.
Sorry, I don't get you.

In the original post from "Image Sensors World" nobody said that it would be only about one specific sensor but the new technologies (plural) of Canon's sensor development.
It was the CR post that put the 120MP sensor into this game/discussion.

the cpw graph uses street pricing which isn't the MAP price.

Shut the front door. No way. Had no idea.

But surely that only speaks to those Richter/polygraph scale-like deviations from the 'main plateaus', right? The plateaus themselves one would think correspond to MAP, right?

- A

I think the CPW graph actually uses lowest advertised price after rebates. It's the price currently being offered on the "street," but isn't the same as CPW's own "street price," which is an unadvertised price offered directly through CPW.

For example, the graph currently shows the 7DII at $1500, which is the lowest advertised price currently available from an authorized dealer. While the CPW "street price" of $1350 is not reflected on the graph. I'm not sure what causes those "Richter/polygraph scale-like deviations" but that might represent dealer specials, rebates, etc.

I stand corrected - I thought it was street and not MAP .. but .. MAP can't go up and down as much as graph tends to show. (sometimes up and down like a freaking yoyo).

I don't know either, but things like this http://www.canonpricewatch.com/blog/2016/11/hot-rebel-t6-2-lenses-printer-for-349-ar-back-at-adorama/ could explain some of the yoyo-ing.

Your ultimate 6D Mark II?

i'm just going to be bit of a party spoiler here and point out that "ultimate 6dii" is a non sequitor.

the 6d is the entry level full frame body, therefor the feature and performance considerations are going to be along the lines of, "what are the fewest features we can put in this and still sell it purely on the strengths of being full frame?"

i think modest increases in resolution and DR are likely, and given its frequent use for landscapes, an articulating screen would definitely be nice to have, but speed, af, and video capabilities are all going to lag significantly behind the 5d and even 7d series.
