Why don't more people use Canon's line of video cameras...

...instead of DSLRs or mirrorless?

Canon has a fine line of XA pro-camcorders and Cinema video cameras?

Some of those are compatible with EF lenses.

Aren't the Canon videography equipment better than a DSLR/mirrorless?
I just closed a deal on a used C70, and I know any long-term review of the camera ends the same way. "You can take it from my cold dead hands". We'll see how it goes. Canon kind of tripped over itself for a long while with the Cinema EOS lineup, and I still don't think it has a clear focus.

ILC video products are exponentially more expensive. Not just the cameras, but also cinema lenses and accessories. Sony has owned the market below ARRI a-cameras for a long time and have been in professional video products a lot longer. If people want that sort of camera, they're off to Sony a majority of the time. That also affects camcorder sales, as customers in that segment like some brand consistency.

The Cinema EOS C400 looks like a winner, and the C70 Mark II will be as well. The rest of the lineup? It's still a bit of a mess with segmentation and competitiveness with Sony. Getting the Sony video customer to move to Cinema EOS? That's a tall order.

It's the same as Sony trying to take the prosumer/professional EOS shooter from Canon (ignore the clickbait system switching articles and videos). Sony can't give entire kits away forever, so their target is probably just going to be new shooters. Canon could definitely do better in that regard, and it could start with compelling and maybe a more affordable Cinema EOS product. The C100 and C200 were great.... and the EOS R5 C did very well, but I think it was still too close to a stills camera and there were a lot of compromises in usability. Just do a C50 with an RF mount and great EF adapter.

Canon EOS R5 Mark II deliveries have already started

after a little more time with the R5M2 I have to definitely modify my statement about the eye control. It is really bad when I have my glasses on. I am unsure if it is the lens coating causing it but my prescription is very light. When shooting in portrait it is very bad, it does not track my eye very well and jumps around erratically.

Huge Gap in Price Points-How will Canon fill it?

  • R1: $6,299
  • R5II: $4,299
  • R6II: $1,999
  • R8: $1,299
Removing the bodies that are old stock left in the channel but obviously not part of the lineup (RP, R5, R3) there are two big gaps.

The gap between the "$4,000 camera" and the "$6,000 flagship" makes sense because flagships typically have a halo tax. The gap between the "$2,000 camera" and the "$4,000 camera" is just weird especially since it is a price point that other vendors target. It's not like Canon to leave a major market niche with nothing filling it.

It is worth noting that it could be that the "$3,000 camera" is a real split in the industry, though. Note that when Nikon updated their "$2,000 camera" (the Z 6II to Z 6III) a couple of months ago they didn't update their "$3,000 camera" (the Z 7II) despite the 6 and 7 series bodies having been released together in the first two generations.

We haven't seen a Sony product line level update recently to see whether this is a real gap in customers and the $3,000 level just doesn't have a market or whether it's just a temporary quirk by two vendors in one niche at about the same time which could be something as simple as both having something innovative in that market and not wanting to be in the shadow of the other's announcement.

Canon EOS R5 Mark II is now in stock

Get it while you can. B&H Photovideo has at the time of post, the Canon EOS R5 Mark II in stock. Stock may be very limited and it could go right back on backorder after the initial shipments are gone.

Yodobashi Camera's Top 10 Lens List

I'm not following the logic on how a top ten list of full frame lenses costing around $2,000 are due to ZV-E10 costing less than the R50. No one buying the apsc ZV-E10 or R50 is buying any of these expensive full frame lenses.
I didn't mean all would buy the top lens. But more cameras sale must help to sell all lens.
I saw many Japanese would spend money to expensive lens even they choose APSC camera.

Eos R6 "Error 20" fault

i did it all and then send my camera Canon Turkey Tecnical Service. My camera's sensor is not working in full performance. They said to me it has to change with new sensor. This is not good for me...

Hello, were you able to solve error 20 on your R6 camera, I have the same problem, I changed the shutter and stabilizer and it still shows error 20, my last option is to change the sensor but I don't know if that will solve it, thanks for your response, sorry my English, my native language is Spanish.

Pre-Burst mode of R5ii

Kind of a fun mental, detective-like exercise...and good, early knowledge sticks better...and sometimes the searches yield unexpected facts.

And as always, this is a RUMORS site!

=====

Indeed the jpegs and HEIF files can come with or without RAW.

"The R5 has no such equivalent mode and the new implementation is more elegant than the one added to the EOS R6 II, in that it saves regular JPEG or HEIFs, with and without Raw files"

...should have more answers here.

Upgrading from an R5 Mk 1 to .....

I just cancelled my R5 II preorder.

Right now, we are looking at 60% of people upgrading to the R5 II. I totally get that and fully reserve the right to upgrade at any point down the road if I see fit ;). Better AF, more FPS, pre-capture, video features, better cooling, the list goes on. The R5 Mk I is a great camera and the R5 II is better.

As for me, I just wasn't excited after the initial euphoria. So, my simple rationale being, as a hobbyist, if something isn't exciting you, why do it? But a few more detailed thoughts kept nagging at me:
  • I like to "shoot to need" then buy what you need. I have very very few needs with my current set up (R5 Mk I). And while I see the R5 II as helping some of those (better AF and pre-capture), it did not feel like enough.
  • I was not interested in all the little stuff that goes with a primary camera body change: new L-bracket, new batteries, reading the manual, redeveloping the muscle memory (granted, they seem pretty similar), etc.
  • Speaking of shooting to need, of the minor "needs" I am aware of I can't stop thinking that it isn't a subtle increase in performance that I really want. Rather, I was something substantially better.
  • I am about to start traveling for work/vacation and the next 6 weekends booked. So, I do not have time to do a proper review if my preorder arrived later this week.
So, there you go. I just got off the "5 series" upgrade cycle (5DIII to IV, to R5). For now.

For all of you that are upgrading, enjoy and please let me know what you think!

IBIS on tripod?

Actually for me sounds like a software bug. And should be repairable with a simple update.

I hope that one day Canon will fix that.
Canon used to mention ‘tripod-sensing’ regarding their lenses. They’ve been silent on that feature for RF lenses. I wouldn’t hold your breath waiting for a fix. Just turn off IS when you’re on a tripod.

Africa film ready for client presentation

I just watched your Africa film, and I have to say, it really captured the essence of the place. The vibrant colors and stunning landscapes brought back memories of my own trip there a few years ago. I love how you’ve used natural sounds to complement the visuals—it adds an authentic touch.

I remember when I took a filmmaking course at a film institute in Prague; they emphasized how important storytelling is in capturing a viewer's attention, and you've done a fantastic job with that!

If I had to suggest anything, maybe consider tightening up a few transitions for smoother flow. But honestly, I think it's great as it is!
Thank you MUCH.

Canon’s global mirrorless market share sits at 41%, with Sony as their “biggest competitor”

Current state of the mirrorless market in Japan

BCN-report-June-2024-Sony-takes-the-1-spot-from-Canon-in-Japan.jpg

Interestingly it seems that Nikon is picking up the most ground with their market share being around 10% in 2022. The Z8 seems to be the main catalyst for their market share increase up until June 2024. This is the same month that the Z6III was announced so I'm guessing their market share will rise a bit more considering it's a more affordable camera and will likely sell more than the Z8. I can't imagine Sony or Canon will release their competitors (R6Miii/A7V) to this camera in 2024.

R5II dynamic range and noise at photonstophotos

Absolutely! Just about all combined scores from evaluation sites are pretty suspect as the weighting of the individual component scores is subjective, but DxO is something else. Still, we can forgive them as they have given us Prime and DeepPrime.
I'm unclear on the relationship between DxO and DxOMark. I think the business model of the latter is to sell the evaluation suite and/or data primarily to makers/consumers of small sensors (mobile, automotive, automation, security), and they measure ILC sensors because DxO has them for their software business.

Even the subscores (landscape, portrait, sports) aren't useful, and their lens scores are even worse (the latter being heavily influenced by dynamic range). Well, maybe they're useful to some people...for example, those shooting portraits in a dimly-lit warehouse (which seems to be a use case their scores emphasize, with 150 lux illumination).

Multimode Optical Signal Dropping

Hello Everyone,

Recently we upgraded our camera to a Sony SRG-A40 4K PTZ Camera because it supports 3G signal using 3G SDI extender. This great and all, but, upon switching to full 1080p 60hz the signal kept dropping resulting in a pixelated flashing screen. We are currently utilizing multi mode fiber. The distance between the points is around 600 meters which is close to the optical extender's signal limitation. Are there any optical signal boosters so we do not require further investment in an 800 meter multimode extender kit?

Thank you,
Fredrick

Is a “crazy” wide angle L prime coming?

But probably cheaper (i.e. less expensive) than the 14-21mm f1.4 UWA zoomlens in this patent:
That rumour was CR2!!
14 or 20mm prime would be better IMHO. I can't see a zoom being as useful though especially given the price it would command as you end up stitching in any case.
I believ that remoured lens would be more useful for live music/performance taken from in front of the stage.

Question about new battery LP-E6P

I own an EOS R + 2 LP-E6N and 2 LP-E6NH.
I want to buy the R5 II.

In addition to the original EOS R charger I have a Nitecore UCN3 USB charger that charges two batteries at the same time (either connected to a normal cell phone charger or attached to a power bank): these are the specifications > https://www.nitecorestore.com/Nitecore-UCN3-Charger-for-Canon-Batteries-p/chg-nite-ucn3.htm

In theory the Nitecore is compatible with the LP-E6N But in practice it also works with the LP-E6NH. Reading the specifications do you think it will also work with the new LP-E6P?
Thx
