October, November Christmas Present purchases.
...

I don't know about you but my Christmas budget doesn't extend into the DSLR price range and I'm envious of anyone that is in a family where buying DSLR price range gifts is "normal."

I'm always surprised at how much some people spend on Christmas gifts. On the other hand, I think a lot of times the special offers available around Black Friday/Christmas serve as a "push" to get people to buy cameras they have been thinking about anyway.

I've seen a number of people actually delay their purchasing decisions to Black Friday / Christmas in the hope of getting a killer deal. To my understanding, this would explain in part, the slow sales prior to Christmas.

Canon EOS 80D Announced

there's a short hands-on available at Digitalrev that says

(ISO test) "Considering the cropped sensor, the 80D performed pretty well in our tests, but certainly wasn't anything to write home about."

Let's hope the author is talking about High ISO performance only (which I'm expecting to be on par for RAW with 70D, 760D etc. or maybe 1/3 stop better). Hard to draw any conclusions from the supplied image crops.

"However, you can tell the body is plastic rather than magnesium alloy which makes the camera feel a little cheap despite the costing US $1,200. For that price, we'd expect something that feels more premium. "

Yes, and even more so with the official EU price of €1399,-. BTW, I don't doubt a 'plastic' body can be very tough, but at this price level one would expect some other 'quality' as well. Let's hope that on further examination the 80D makes up for that with a much improved sensor (DR) and AF system.

IR guys posted their studio samples.

That does look like 80D has no advantage on the 7DMK2 regarding noise.
Makes me think whether I shouldn't buy the 7DMK2 with the better build and ergonomics. For more or less the same price.

Review: Zeiss Otus 28mm f/1.4 ZE Lens

Nope, i will not spend $5000 for a lens that come without perfection. The Otus 85mm f1.4 is a kind of perfect lens, although it's lack of AF, people who can afford it, will buy it. For me, canon 35L II still the wide lens king, because for a "not-everyone-lens" the Otus 28mm f1.4 still have pretty much imperfections.

With $5000 price tag, you MUST offer something perfect.

Thinking about springing for a 70-300L IS

Well, I have it and I love it. So far no discernible need to AFMA the lens and I love all the features. The hood is top notch as well with no pesky lock button and yet it's close to the barrel and secure. Tomorrow I'll test it out with the CPL. In a couple weeks I'll take it to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, woohoo.

Thanks for all your feedback.

1dx2 - Comments on shadow noise by Andy Rouse

So let me tell you this, and boo boys please note. The 1DX2 has MUCH better shadow detail and reduced noise than the 1DX (which was no slouch either). This means that I can push and work with the file a lot more, i.e. I don't need to be picky about getting the exposure right all the time. It's been one of the revelations of the 1DX2. It's how I define dynamic range too. Now some may claim that DPP is doing some magic, who cares to be honest, the files out of it are good and I am a convert now completely. Now last week I shot a video on the 1DX2 for Park Cameras at the BWC. You will see it soon. It was a tough video as the weather conditions were rubbish and the subject was very challenging. Now as a laugh I set the ISO to 25,600 and did some otter portraits........

heres the full paragraph note the highlight!!!!

You got me there.

The boo-boys of the DR brigade may need to find other employment real soon.

Gotta love the term "Boo-boys". :D :D :D

What "boo-boys" have criticized the DR of the 1dxII?? If this model has great DR (and I sincerely hope it does) then it in no way invalidates the criticism of previous models...if anything it does the opposite.

Tamron Announces the SP 85mm F/1.8 Di VC USD

Ivan Muller said:
Sounds like an interesting lens, and if the 35mm f1.8 is anything to go by it should be very sharp to boot! But my Tamron 35 on the 6D gives terrible results with all the AF points except the center one.....

So yes Tamron is bringing out great lenses but the focusing seems to be a problem, as with all third party lenses...

There was some news a while ago that Canon wanted to buy Sigma but was turned down, perhaps they should look at Tamron instead...my 35mm f1.8 is a very very sharp lens!

I think the SP line (recent releases) are very good. I only have the 15-35. It is very good at focus, but that might just be my copy.

Does Moore's law apply to digital photography?

The issue I see is that the biggest problem for CMOS sensors is noise. Pixels need to be larger, in general, to reduce noise, which is moving in the opposite direction. Pixels come in various flavours with different numbers of transistors (the basic pixel uses three) and making these smaller might leave more room for the photodetector diode, but they will contribute increasing leakage and noise (again)...
Moore's law might give us the means to process photos in the camera ... as mentioned above, focus & image stacking, HDR etc. instead of having to use the computer?

5DSR for wildlife in dawn & birding?

I'm relatively new to wildlife and bird photography, but am very pleased with my 5DsR for this use. I often shoot near dawn and dusk and feel comfortable using ISO's up to 3200. As Fegari pointed out, the noise cleans up easily, especially when downsampled. I sold my 5D3 a few months after buying the 5DsR since the 5DsR does everything better.

I have never used a 1Dx and undoubtedly the high frame rate, excellent AF and noise handling make it a premier low light BIF camera. The one advantage of the 5DsR in comparision is the resolution and ability to crop.

For me the 5DsR is an ideal camera since I'm primarily a landscape photographer and just shoot birds occasionally. Since your usage is different it may or may not be the best choice for you.

Canon Announces the EOS Rebel T6 (1300D)

What I find strange is that it lacks sensor cleaning. That would probably attract entry level users who does not like the idea of cleaning the sensor. I am here talking about marketing not on how effective or useful those are in practice. Also that probably means that if it gets a hot pixel one has to take it to service for it to me masked out. Sure as most users will have the kit lens always on sensor cleaning is not an issue.

Perhaps they got it wrong, but the specs on B&H indicate "Dust Reduction System = Yes" — the same as every other Canon DSLR.

I looked it up in the manual (p. 299):

Dust delete feature: Dust Delete Data appending, Clean manually

Compare to eg. the 80D manual (p. 497) which states:

Dust delete feature: Auto, Manual, Dust Delete Data appending

Canon 6D Vertical Banding problem

davcanon6d said:
I think the 6D is excellent for stills photography, but not as good for video. Id like to see Canon address the problems with the 6D video with the mark 2 - Id really like to see them sort out the moire problems with the 6D also,

The moire on current 6d is tolerable at least for stills photography. Tinkering with the filter may result to less sharp images. As for the banding, you will be better off with sony or panasonic cameras. GH series from panasonic got excellent reviews in eoshd.

Sigma Announces Two New Mirrorless Cameras: Sigma sd Quattro and sd Quattro H

what's interesting is that a few years back, after the 1D Mark IV was discontinued, there were a bunch of scattered rumors about APS-H not entirely disappearing, and also Canon working with Sigma on Foveon-type sensors. don't think this is the result that people were envisioning back then, but it's pretty cool.

I have no experience with Sigma cameras, only experience with Sigma lenses, but I'd give something like this a spin if either:

Canon were to develop their own version of the sd Quattro H (similar to how Canon basically rebuilt a Sony RX100 into the G7), or if Sigma gave up on trying to use their own sigma lens mount and instead just offered the sd Quattro H with a Canon mount. neither is likely to happen, ever, but I still look forward to reading reviews on the Quattro H... good to see Sigma pushing boundaries.

Canon PowerShot G7 X II & PowerShot SX720 HS Announced

plam_1980 said:
Why are they introducing the DIGIC 7 processor in a powershot and not in the new DSLRs?

Same reason nearly every camera comes with at least one new feature not seen in any others. Canon are skilled fisherman. Its not all about trickle down technology. Trickle up has its place in the sales game.

Touch screen was first seen in an entry level mirrorless, right? And dual pixel AF was also first seen in a mainstream consumer DSLR. that's just two examples. These features are now in Canon's flag ship camera.

To be the market leader you have to be smart about every move, even if the tiny percentage of photographers on forum like to gripe about the wisdom of Canon's measured approach to mot everything and ignore all the grand slams Canon is also known for. R&D is much more relaxed and well executed when you can release features when they are truly ready, and not have to rush them for something high end, or sit on the tech forever until another high end camera is ready. You have so consider there are many pipelines going at once, and they are not all on the same time table.

Even in regards to their 1" sensor cams... They are superior to the Sony versions in nearly evey way, and at a fraction of the price, yet a small but vocal percentage ignore that and are hung up on complaining Sony made one first. How is Canon making better cameras at a fraction of the price if not through smarter execution?

Interesting Canon Senor Shift IS Patent

Found on Egami via Photorumors:

Appears to relate to using full frame lenses with sensor based IS to allow greater stabilisation on APS-C bodies. They're probably thinking of movie shooters shooting handheld in place of steady cam systems (sorry, I'm not a video users so I don't know the correct terminology for this).

Interesting that Canon appear to be considering sensor shift IS though, after all this time pushing lens based IS.

it's digital video stabilization.

it's not sensor shifting.

You could be right, the Google translation is crappy. Do you speak Japanese?

Possibly ok after dropped?

Damage is probably not that bad. Had a similar thing happen to me with my 5D MK III except it was a small kid that knocked it out of my hands I had a longish crack by the Hot Shoe.

I am a Gold CPS member, sent it in, Canon had it back to me in about 5 days (from sending in on Monday, it was back by Friday) and cost something insane like $135 or there abouts for a new shell, as well as the comfort of knowing Canon fully checked the functions.

Ads playing sound ?!?

Canon Rumors said:
The guys that handle my ads are saying it's a known issue affecting a few of their clients and that they're working on a fix. Auto-playing ads are against their terms of service unless an admin asks for it, but who would? :)

The joys of running a website.......

Keep up the good work and hope you get the problem solved.

Zeiss Otus 28mm f1.4 vs Canon 35mm f1,4 L MK2 ???

wallstreetoneil said:
I own the Canon - it is extraordinary at F 1.4

Yes I know, I had at it and it is great ... Well I guess the only thing is Zeiss making up this incomparable Best Wide Angle Lens Ever for DSLR stuff made me expect some more than the real performance, which is still very good but that is expected for a 5k USD lens ...

A Sony & Canon Sensor Partnership Mentioned Again [CR1]

or what happened was that Sony made the chip for Samsung.

which seems especially likely considering that Samsung just announced a DPAF 12MP sensor of it's own.

Some of the Galaxy S7s come with Sony fab sensors (IMX260). Some come with Samsung fab sensors (S5K2L1).

Samsung could have contracted Sony to make it though. Sony would still give it a part number.

also the number is curious since Sony's OWN manufactured / sold sensors are up to IMX313 as far as designations.

Full Frame Addition: 5d2, 5d3, 6d, wait for 5dx/4 ??? Landscape Images

If you have a chance, rent a FF for a few days and take the same pics with both cameras. That will give you the answer that you need. Having both a 6D and an SL1, for my purposes and the type of pics I take (daylight, landscapes) there is very little difference. I don't print as large as you, but at 8" x 10" I can't tell the difference between cameras. Since you print larger, it would be best to actually compare them yourself, so rent if you can. I think it would be worth the cost.
