New DPAF CMOS patent: Canon EOS 80D?

Hi StudentOfLight

What a great post. I had not read your post before (but was notified of this in your post on a newer thread about the recently (now actually announced!) 80D here http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=29120.msg579227#msg579227)

The description you wrote above (in this post) about this new Dual Pixel AF (DPAF) patent was well written... I could understand it well (despite not being an electrical engineer, scientist, etc). Being an enthusiastic photographer for the past 20+ years has given me more appreciation of physics (particularly light!) So your description was helpful for me to understand some aspects of DPAF.

There are some indications (both in the recently announced 1DXII and the 'fresh from the press' 80D) that Canon has implemented quite a substantial upgrade to DPAF (which I am quite happy about). :D

Firstly for me I am happy that it comes closer to giving us the best of both worlds (Live view / aka 'almost mirrorless functionality') and TTL (optical) in real functionality (fast, accurate, continual AF).
Secondly, that there may be improved image quality (signal-to-noise ratio, dynamic range, etc) - which of course will be fully brought out in the various professional and user reviews and testing! :P

Thanks / cheers!

Sony a6300 destroys this camera in terms of specs.

Personally, I use a camera system to take pictures. If you enjoy taking pictures with a specification list, you should be very happy with an a6300. :)

Wait, we take pictures with these things? I thought we just looked at spec lists and argued over them..

Canon 10-18 EF-S Equivalent focal length question

I hear that it is an excellent lens for the price - let us know how you get on with it. I am thinking that it would be a good travel/landscape lens for my 7D2.

I'm using it on a Canon 7D Mark II and love it! One of the things you give up with a crop sensor is decent wide angle. This lens makes up for that! Even though it is not a super bright lens, that is somewhat made up for in that it has IS and your camera has fairly good high ISO capability (not the best there is but pretty good). It is about similar build quality to the infamous nifty fifty, but honestly I think it ranks as one of the best "bang for the buck" lenses Canon sells.

Thanks Basil!
I normally use a 1 series full frame camera and a 16-35 F4 L IS for wider angle shots but this is a bit big and heavy for travel. This is why I am considering the 10-18 - small, light and cheap! It wouldn't get used very much so there is no point in spending a fortune!

I will have to see what's in the Piggy Bank. I am off to try out the 1DX Mk2 in a few days so all ideas may be off!

you can't do ....panoramas without a tripod.

What utter crap.

Ok, "can't" was an absolute indicating impossible. And your response indicates you "can" be impossible yourself.

If we are talking about snapshots, you can do panoramas with your cellphone. Not me. I'd rather remember the scene than mar it permanently in that way.

Without a tripod, again, very limited. Crank up the ISO, keep the aperture relatively wide, be prepared to crop out much more because of alignment issues...Sure, it can be done. They show 'em at the local camera club, quite proudly, from time to time!

Yea, I'd go with Sporgon on this one +1000... I go handheld for panos about half the time. A tripod is nice but absolutely not necessary if you know what you're doing. Even with night shots you can do a pano if you're careful.

I was trying to be helpful.

Yes, photography should be fun.

Trying to be helpful with poor, erroneous information... "helpful" advice like that isn't helpful at all and really doesn't add any "fun" to photography.

What, poor erroneous information like this "If you back up the light it will go softer." that is still not edited for correction? http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=29011.msg576139#msg576139

Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM, Power Zoom Adaptor PZ-E1 & Directional Stereo Microphone DM-E1

Re: Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM, Power Zoom Adaptor PZ-E1 & Directional Stereo Microphone D
This new accessory microphone will help improve sound quality while shooting video, allowing users to rotate the direction of the microphone up and down from 90 to 120 degrees depending on the shooting situation.
This is incorrect, from what I can tell. Assuming this is the US press release, someone at Canon USA misinterpreted a spec list and made a bad assumption. The mic does not 'rotate up and down 90-120°', there is a switch that allows selection of the angle of sensitivity as shotgun, 90° stereo or 120° stereo.

Looks like it's the same mic body as the DM-100 that I have for my Vixia camcorder, just with a different mount and a wired connection instead of transmitting through the (mini) hotshoe.

Canon EOS 80D, PowerShot G7 X II, SX720 HS & EF-S 18-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Coming Shortly

Canon were caught unprepared in 2012/3. You can see that in a lot of their product releases for 2013, both in the lack of a 7D2, as well as the way their camcorders were released. The G30 came 3 months after the G20 for example, and simultaneously with the pro versions - the G30 was clearly being dumped on the market ahead of schedule because Canon knew that other manufacturers had more advanced products imminent. They were definitely in panic mode, and still have not got their game together.

Ahhh, so that's why they subsequently gained market share.

LIGHTNING PHOTOS

Valvebounce said:
Hi dhr90.
Lightning storms here are infrequent too, I can remember as a child laying in bed, I'd have been in bed by 9ish watching a lightning storm on many evenings each summer, now when we do get a storm most often it is the wee small hours of the morning and if it wakes me just an inconvenience, I miss those evening storms and by that I mean I'd take anything before about midnight! ;D

Cheers, Graham.

Hope to contribute myself one day, but lightning storms are very infrequent around my area.

I know what you mean about all storms seemingly being in the early hours of the morning, usually when you have to be up early for work the next day too. I would love to go for a month long storm chasing trip to the USA one year!

The Grid: Canon 1DX mark with Rudy Winston, Peter Miller, and Damian Strohmeyer

The two guys who shot the super bowl with the 1DX mark ii were on an episode of the grid. It is a difficult video to watch because it is so very long. However if you have an extra hour in your day and want to hear everything you possibly can about the new 1DX mark ii then here is the link:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8n_wTSDkvu8&t=4098s

If you don't want to watch it, here is what I found relevant (most I already knew):
-14 fps is noticeable and desired over 12 fps
-High ISO is noticeably better with much less chroma noise than the 1DX
-Autofocus is noticeably better with quicker acquisition than the 1DX
-Dynamic range is noticeably better with more details in the shadows
-There is something about the files that make them more pleasing with less need to adjust in post
-The colors are nicer and more vibrant, even at higher ISOs
-A mirrorless camera cannot replace a pro DSLR for sports photography

And what I found to be the most amazing thing is that a pro sports photographer shooting the super bowl uses the single center AF point to track subjects and get his shot, and the others agreed with him. All this talk of intelligent subject tracking and 3D tracking, but when it comes to a one of the best pros out there, the uses the center point only and manages to get amazing shots.

Considering an upgrade from the original 7D

I have been comparing these two as well coming from the original 7D and what made me decide on the 5D3 was that it's basically a full frame 7D with a slightly slower framerate. You really get a different camera that is better in low light, for wider images. So instead of getting a wide angle lens for the 7D, I added that money to the 5D3 which evened out the price difference.
To me, the benefit is that you have the 7D for things which require tele (animals, planes, sports, action) and the 5D3 for landscapes, portraits, dark events, studio work) It really extends what you can do with your lenses.
On the 6D, I missed the 7D focus system, so that was not an option.

I now shoot about 75% 5D3 and 15% 7D (and 10% 100D because that fits in a pocket :)

1DX II and DXO Mark

3kramd5 said:
Yes. DXO's bias is heavily weighted towards sensor DR, and that's unlikely to change.

If the 1DXII has 2-3 stops better low-iso DR than the 1DX (question the relevance in that target demographic), it is very likely the scores for the former will dwarf the scores for the latter, largely because of their bias.

+1000

Based on the shadow-pulling example that was posted the other day, the 1DXII seems to have 2 stops better DR than the 1DX.
So, the 1DXII will definitely get quite a bit higher DxO score than the 1DX.

The 1DXII won't be able to match the A7RII DR, though, as the A7RII has 2x the resolution - and DxO normalizes for resolution.
OTOH, I bet that 1DXII will score better than the Nikon D5. We'll see.

It's interesting to see how the upcoming 80D will fare.
Due to expected DR improvements, it won't be all that surprising if the 80D scores higher than the 5DIII (mark my words ;)).
But many Canon shooters will take this as additional proof that DxO is biased.
And it is ... but obviously not against Canon.

Are prime lenses more weather resistant then zoom lenses?

Cheekysascha said:
So I'm leaving for Iceland next week and I'm packing my camera gear right now when I started to wonder which lens would be more weather resistant to snow and rain, my Canon 24mm 1.4 ii or my 24-70 2.8 ii I'm thinking it should be the prime as the zoom extends and snow/rain could get in the barrel.

What do you guys think? sorry if it's a bit of a stupid question.
It seems that the 24L may be less prone to be affected by weather factors because it does not extend, however, it will save you from changing lenses if focal lenght change is required.

Canon Executive Talks EOS M in 2016

what I remember from reading several articles, Sony's market share plummeted in numbers because they are concentrating on high end cameras (with much higher profit per unit).

Unit sales fell 30%. Operating income is up, though that's partly due to reduced costs and inventory.

Really?

Sales decreased 5.0% year-on-year (a 5% decrease on a constant currency basis) to 191.9 billion yen (1,599 million U.S. dollars). This decrease was primarily due to decreases in unit sales of video cameras and digital cameras* reflecting a contraction of the market, partially offset by an improvement in the product mix of digital cameras reflecting a shift to high value - added models.

Operating income increased 4.0 billion yen year-on-year to 23.7 billion yen (197 million U.S. dollars). This increase was mainly due to the improvement in the product mix of digital cameras and cost reductions, partially offset by the impact of the above-mentioned decrease in sales. During the current quarter, there was a 2.3billion yen negative impact from foreign exchange rate fluctuations.

See screenshot below from the Q315 earnings presentation. Do you not understand the meaning of unit sales? Or was the math hard? 2.6 – 1.8 = 0.8, 0.8 ÷ 2.6 = 0.3077 x 100 = 30.8% reduction. Note that your pasted text also mentions the cost reductions as a main reason, which supports my statement that the increased operating income is, "...partly due to reduced costs."

So, yes...really.

Never said your claim was false. It was about how you rather conveniently pull stuff totally out of context ignoring certain facts to produce posts which gives a totally false impression of reality.

You are the Canon cheerleader version of Dilbert, you are just as bad. Neuroland is just as far from reality as Dilbert land. He isn't as big a hippocrite as you though.

Really? Just like I never said you couldn't perform simple math.

The context was in the quote to which I responded, sorry you don't understand that discussing unit sales in the context of 'plummeting market share' and mentioning some caveats associated with Sony's strategy from their own documentation is completely in context.

Come back when dilbert can string two correct facts together without an egregious blunder... ::)

Yeah, and somehow those caveats are worth mentioning but not the fact that Sony only has a 5% reduction of sales (probably better than the market and certainly better than Canon's -13.4%) and a 20% increase of profit as a result of that strategy.

4K? Who cares. 4K is one of those things....it just isn't worth it unless it is done right. And to do it right is rare these days and expensive. Otherwise, 4K is just a token spec for marketing and publicity.

Spoken like a person that doesn't care for video features in his/her DSLR, right?
I mean... nobody will buy 4K DSLRs, what the hell were they thinking with the 1DX2?
::)

Nikon's implementation of 4K downright sucks. 4K is about ultimate quality. If it isn't done right, then there's no point to it. Proper 4K video capability right now is the territory of Canon flagships. Not Nikon cameras, or Canon enthusiast/consumer cameras.

Could Canon put 4K in the 80D? Yes. Would it be worthy? No.

I'd have to agree with others, the 80D just has to make sure it can compete (or surpass) with the Nikon D5500 and D7200. That means connectivity and other consumer interested features. Doubt 4K is high up on the list of consumer demand for DSLR video making....
Agree that the 4K on D500 doesn't look attractive, except maybe for wildlife video where the crop factor might be an advantage. But the 80D apparently skips 4K completely..., for that you have to buy the 90D in 2 years or the more expensive 5D4 end of this year ;-)

G1X MK II or G5X or M3 or ...?

Good choice. I looked at the G1X II and my gosh is that thing slow. Actually, for a Canon, like the G3x, G5x, G7x, and G9x, it's the norm. Size, EVF, and performance makes the RX100 III a top pick.

Embed small watermark in "internet versions"? + Portfolio usage

niels123 said:
Occasionally, I photograph a wedding or other formal ceremony. Until now, I didn't have a contract and I just did all the communication via email. Recently, I had several bad experiences: clients violating agreements and refusing to pay :(

This made me think to set up terms&conditions. Suddenly, I was asked to photograph a ceremony in seven days. Since I didn't have anything and wanted to be more 'strict' I made some clear terms&conditions and now my client complainds about two of these 'rules':

1) I wanted to put a small watermark of my homepage in the bottom right corner of my photos. I would then supply the client with two copies of each photo: full-res without watermark and about 1000px with small watermark for facebook etc.

2) I asked permission to use the photos for promotional activities (i.e. in my portfolio). He wants to give explicit written permission for each photo before I can use it.

3) If you do supply all the photos without any whatermark, is it then fair to request that the photographer is mentioned when photos are published by the client?

It is common practice for photographers to ask for permission in a contract so the photographer can use whatever he likes on his website(s)? What do you think of it?
What is you opinion on watermarks? Obviously, gray, small and only in the bottom and about 30% opacity, not large black or white text.

Here's an example:

example.jpg
I would be very leary of a client that needs a photographer a week before the event. You may have a problem client no one wants. I wouldn't stress on getting photo releases for this wedding, save that hassle for one that you are going to be able to plan the event a little better. This may not be the event to implement these new rules. This seems like a quick in quick out deal.

If this client doesn't want there pictures online i would say respect their wishes, while this client may not have time to get another photographer others will, so be flexible for your future clients. If they like your work they will refer people to you.
